Why is there a recipe to convert 50 watchwork sprockets to 10 blade shards, but not vice versa?

Edited for clarity.

Why is there a recipe to convert 50 watchwork sprockets, which actually have value, to 10 utterly worthless blade shards, but not vice versa?

Blade shards are not utterly worthless though. They may be worthless to you, but something being worthless to you does not automatically mean it is worthless to everyone else.

The conversion is a choice to save time at the expense of more coin.
Either spend a lot of time farming blade shards for the items you want, or buy the sprockets and convert them over to blade shards.

And? I still see that is says blade shards are “utterly worthless”. I pointed out the fact that they are not.

It’s true that so far they are only used to make that back piece in all it’s variations. And you need nearly 900 to craft the ascended version of it.

Of course once you have it you don’t need any more Blade Shards. Sort of like all that ascended crafting mats that keep dropping.

Well, let’s rephrase what I said by removing the emphasized parts:

Because, whether you can access it or not, it is much easier to get Watchwork Sprockets?

Would still be nice to have a use for blade shards for people who do not want or need to make spinal blade packs.

Or, hell, just make blade shards not account bound so I can at least give it to someone who might find it useful.

You know as soon as you gave them away, some other use will appear for them. Lol.

If you had no use for them, there was a vendor that took them recently. Or maybe Sonder will be willing to trade for them some day. /shrug

After that whole debacle with the blade shard trader in Labyrinthine Cliff, I really don’t expect ANet to do anything else with it unless they bring Scarlet back in some weird time travel event that trashes LA again with another invasion.

And feel free to blame me if that actually happens.

Because it’s harder to get Blade Shards than Watchwork Sprockets.

I agree with the op. I have 2 backpieces made and while a third would be something to do is not really in my plans (I still have enough shards to make one). I traded in 1000 shards while I could just to get rid of them since what you traded them for was not really impressive. I can make more with the sprockets than the shards so would not mind that option to get sprockets.
I do believe we will be seeing more watchwork type mobs so sprockets could again be very common, this does not mean a way to get rid of account bound items would not be welcome.

umm

Blade shards aren’t on the TP, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have value.

You need 50 sprockets to make about 10 blade shards. That means bladeshards are about 5x the value of sprockets. Simples.

So blade shards got introduced to craft the backpacks.
People complained that they had too much blade shards and nothing to do with it, so Anet introduced the trader which gave people a couple of blues and greens.
Now you come around and say, hey let me forge 10 blade shards into 50 sprockets and sell them for 1.5g on the tp.

Fair? You decide.
