Character Collision / Body Blocking
Would never work in world vs world, it’s so crowded you can barely see what is going on, if there was also collision detection between characters, nobody would even want to be melee because they wouldn’t be able to get to their target.
Since my last post was deleted I’ll just comment again.
There are games that have “body” blocking. It can be more frustrating then helpful. There was a contested mob in one of these games that dropped rare items. Entire guild would chain around it so no one could get through. The later implemented that if a person was put on ignore you could run through them.
We can fit a whole squad in a single mesmer portal. With the result that whomever you plop on is dead before you render on their screen.
If the server were managing collision, you’d be dead for several minutes before anything showed on your screen.
Real pvp games always have collision, just like football. But this is GW2.
Not designed for it, and it’d be totally unfair with the races.
It’d take 5 minutes after server up for a handful of nekkid Norns to block access to the BLTC in Lion’s Arch.
Could make it so that only enemies body block. It’s relatively common in strategy games to allow a character to move through their allies as its assumed they are letting them past, but not enemies.
It also already happens somewhat for people with melee assist on. If you have melee assist on you can’t move through your target without dodging through. But in melee assist’s case it’s almost certainly clientside, and something integral like that being handled clientside is just asking for it to be hacked. So it would have to be moved serverside, which would overload the already heavily loaded servers.
I think it’s a good idea on paper, it has potential to add a bit more depth to combat, but currently wouldn’t work.
Body blocking would be great were collision detected only between enemies.
But… the main issue may be performance concerns. Imagine how much more taxing large dynamic events and enormous WvW battles would be.
get 5 norns.
block access to both the trading post and the bank in lion’s arch.
that’s why.
Eh.. you guys are kind of bring up dumb points? Blocking the BLT? What.. ?
Eh.. you guys are kind of bring up dumb points? Blocking the BLT? What.. ?In Warhammer Online clipping was off unless there were enemies near, also when it was on, if you pressed up against the fellow for a few seconds, 6 or so, you would push through them. So no blocking friendlies from the markets or.. whatever weird kitten excuses your making up. Id really suggest people try a game with clipping before they scream nay! Blocking makes tactical PvP so much more fun then the waving action you see now. It also means that groups of a few can hold a strong position vs larger groups, such as door ways, valleys, keep doors.

It crushes performance, since the calculations to detect collisions between polygons is laborious.
Indeed I was thinking body blocking only for PvP, in PvE, outside of all the major PvP activities it would be disabled. Having it on for PvP though would certainly add to the gameplay. But as many have said, I too am worried about how it would affect performance, especially in WvW. The calculations that are running about in the servers seems to be pretty taxing already, so I can understand the concern. Still, I would really like to know if this kind of gameplay element would be totally impossible.
2 reason:
1) performance… as many already stated the collision calculation are heavy… GW2 actual WvW numbers will be too much to andle and the game will probably turn from really fluid to a side show… unless Anet is willingly to spend lots of money on the most advanced machine (project titan from nvidia should be enough :P )…
2) race size discrepancy… all melee dps will be asura (to get trough small space between player)…. while all tank would be norn (to cover the most space with less player)… ranged dps will also be all asura so that they could hide in greater number behind the large shoulder of their friendly norn guardian… melee norn and tank asura will be a lughing stock as well as massively penalized in WvW…
…just make all the hit boxes the same size.. its really not hard to balance, is no race would be better at it then any other. Some weird random reasons lol..
How about they wont do it because the moon is blue and the post reply button will be replaced with the preview button.. then.. then goggle rise and become the most OP class because of the leprechauns!
This has been tried before. You think WvW has issues now. You make the clients and the server crunch the math for collision and the game will be unplayable.
I support enemy body blocking as long as rolls can by pass them. Friendly body blocking is a no for me.
Edit – Obviously not at the cost of performance, if it can’t be done right then don’t.

In guild wars 1 body blocking was independent of character size. If they ever implemented this, they would follow the same logic. I agree that for places like spvp and dungeons body blocking would be very useful. For other places tho it would just be a terrible grievance.
