Commander Tag Refunds
The reason they reimburse people who bought more than 3 but not people who bought 1-3 is because the new tag will be account bound and cost 300g
If you bought them for 3 characters then you spent the same as you would under the new system. If you bought 1 or 2 you got a bargin. But if you bought then for 4, 5, 6 or more characters you wasted money, potentially a lot of money. So they’re refunding the difference.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
This reasoning was before they made the color adjustable for free. We don’t know if they are reconsidering the refund policy because of the change.
RIP City of Heroes
Yes, the reasoning was before the switching of colors would be for free but it is still sound reasoning.
1 tag before cost 100 gold
1 tag after costs 300 gold
You buy 4 tags, that’s 400 gold (you deserve a refund)
You buy 3 tags, that’s 300 gold (same as the new price)
You buy 2 tags, that’s 200 gold (that’s still less than the new system)
Essentially, you’re asking for a refund because something increased in price. I’ve worked retail, and we honored when things went down in price, but no one would ask for a refund because it grew more expensive. Look at it as if you saved 100 gold or didn’t lose any money. Those who bought 4 still paid 300 gold for their new commander tag as well since they only get a refund for every tag in excess of 3.
I can’t find where they talked about refunds now, but if I remember correctly they also said they’d refund the difference. Meaning if you bought 4 tags at 400g each you’ll get 100g back.
Doing the same for people who only bought 1 or 2 would technically mean they take an additional 100g – 200g from your account.

I bet it’s happened at least once. I’ve seen similar situations like a customer wanting their money back on something they got for free. Mostly I could explain it but one person was only happy when I took it back, ran it through the till and handed them a receipt showing they had paid £0.00, returned it and £0.00 was refunded back into their account.

Buy more and then get a refund?
Buy more and then get a refund?
You’re only refunded 100g per tag over tree. In other words, if you have four tags when the patch hits, you’re refunded 100g.
Ok…what ya’ll have said does make sense but…here is another point I just thought of lol. The people that bought just 1 tag will benefit more than those who bought 2-3 tags…..still not fair to those of us who bought 2-3.
I get where you’re coming from. However, it’s also not fair to those in the future who would only ever use one character as a commander but now have to pay 300g regardless. Such things are never fair to everyone but they have to draw the line somewhere. I assume you bought extra tags because you felt you needed those at the time and not because someone was holding you at gunpoint to do it. In that case you probably also got to enjoy using it, so there’s that.
Perhaps they felt the amount of money coming into circulation at once would be too huge if they refunded all but 100g to everyone.
Do you sit and think about what things you can complain about today?
You also got to use those extra tags you paid for, so you did receive a benefit for that money spent.
I see that people that have bought more than 3 Commander tags will be getting a refund. This does not sit right with me. Those of us that have 2-3 Commander tags invested a lot of time, effort and resources to procure them, yet we are being blown off as insignificant. 100-200 gold and 250-500 badges of honor is not just spare change to most players! We deserve to be re-imbursed right along with the Big spenders!
You aren’t being “blown off as insignificant.” ANet explained the rationale, other people explained it above. No one is getting all the money reimbursed and unless you bought the second tag just before the announcement, you got full use of two characters with tags.
Here’s the other way ANet could have handled it:
- All commander tags are removed from all characters.
- Each account gets a 100g refund per tag. Perhaps also a badge refund.
- Anyone who wants an account-wide command tag with an option of four colors gets to pay 300g + 1,500 badges.
I hope you’ll agree while that would be “fair,” it would also create unnecessary work for ANet, their support team, and every player involved. Doesn’t it seem more reasonable to give a discount to people who spent more than 300g, but not to those who spent less?

Those who have bought more tags have increased functionality for the time they’ve had them. I’ve had two tags for months now, and I use them both.
I could have only had one all this time, and it would have been far more inconvenient.
If you knew, would you have waited months and months to get the second tag?
It’s like when people complain that new people that buy the game get some special armor or bag or whatever.
I’m thinking, right but I’ve been playing this game and gathering stuff for a year that they didn’t have it. I’m way ahead of those people

I actually wish they had done this. Announcing the what the price was going to be and then announcing that the 100g tags would carry over created a huge influx of tags.
At least adding badges to the mix makes them some how earned through game play. Having them as a gold only purchase makes it a vanity item.
I personally think it’s fine the way that they’re handling this. People that paid for 2 tags still are paying less than people that will have to pay from thereon out, and people that paid for 3 tags didn’t lose anymore money than they initially did anyways.

I agree that it’s fine the way they’re handling it (there is no good way, so one must select the least bad option), but given how gold has inflated over time, people who bought 3+ commander tags are still getting the short end of the stick. They could have used the 200+ gold to invest and flip things on the trading post for that whole time (and even at a pitiful average 5% return per week, that’s pretty significant… with 200 gold seed, and 20 weeks at 5% return per week, you’d have ~530 gold at the end of that; even a 1% weekly return, which is terrible, would leave you with 244 gold), or they could have purchased items for permanent use that are now much more expensive.
The good way, would be to refund all but 100g to vets in the game that invested in multiple tags. New players, and those that got wind of the change before hand… only spent 100g for 1 tag that’s now account bound.
This would have been a fair, and legitimate move where no one would have felt wronged post patch. Very simple logic.
P.S.
I still haven’t received a refund for ANY of the additional tags I bought, and I had 4.
