Delete inactive character names, please.
I cannot say that I really agree with the suggestion of asking that Anet take something away from one player in order to give it to another, particularly since the original possessor of the name, in this case, may have had it for years before GW2 even launched.

Because …
The OP either needs a better imagination or more unique source material to mine. Sorry every major fantasy character name and common variations were likely taken before the game went live to non-preorder players.

And DaoC and LotRO. At least LotRO left you will all your furniture, in a chest in a real estate broker’s office, but your prime lakeside estate nestled among your guild mates? Gone. DaoC, it all just poofed after I took a 4 week break. Guess what? That break became permanent (ok, so the completely horrible Trials of Atlantis where you died just taking two steps, and my guild moving on, those were big factors. But losing my carefully furnished house that I had camped out the plot for didn’t help).
You could have got your stuff from one of the housing NPCs.
And on topic (since my previous comment wasn’t terribly constructive): if you miss out, you miss out. Nobody knows why someone has to or wants to take time off so names shouldn’t be deleted willy nilly. And besides, this game is like Hotel California. You can check out anytime you like….
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

World of Warcraft allows for the claiming of inactive names. They also have a system for showing how long the name owner’s account has been inactive.
Surprise!
This isn’t WoW.

how helpful and mature. Thanks for letting people use keyboards when playing GW2 though, cause, you know, WoW uses a keyboard UI. Screen and mouse too.
LOL!
Amusing that you point out how immature and unhelpful someone else is by demonstrating that very thing yourself. Well done.
Just use several names? This game doesn’t restrict you on just one term… I never had problems.
