As the topic states, if you no longer WvW what keeps you from logging in? Just interested in what drives people away from this feature.

Because there is no sense of server community and rivalry. If you work on a server and make it awesome like HoD and BG back at launch then you’ll just be swapped with band-wagoners. So it’s actually better for your server to not do as well. Also with unlimited server transfers you can move servers every week depending on what your looking for.

In better games such as those made by Blizzard your servers have an identity. Some good some bad. Tichondrius is probably one of the best PvP servers out there. And you will get a sense of rivalry on the forums etc. Between Darkspear, Tich, KT, Illidan etc. You don’t have people flipping back and forth every other week.

In GW2 the whole sense of server identity is kind of meh. Honestly the forums provide more entertainment then the game itself.

PS. Another thing is in WoW you can actually get your best PvP gear through PvP. Unlike GW2 that you get the best gear through grinding PvE instances.

I heard transfers are still free just because they are working on the “guest system”, where you can play with other servers PVE. Until that is done it is supposed to go for payments. Though, it wont be much of an issue to keep transfering even with paid methods, with the gold to gems exchange, but atleast it will be controlled and won’t be changing servers every week.

Way too late for that. TA, Ascension, and many other of the alliances, the guilds, and even the members in them have moved on to other games and are not looking back. The server communities are pretty much gone. Ohh well that is something that could have been awesome had it continued that takes it’s place with stuff like, horizontal progression that got thrown out the window by AN.

I am interested to see how well they’re going to do with Esports after they sent Cease and Desist orders to the pro gamers that were streaming their matches a few months ago that have sworn off the game. Good job with that =P

Anyways off to run some BGs cya in a week.

I got right into WvW for the first 500 hours or so but I rarely spend more than an hour a day in there now. My enthusiasm waned because of several factors, but mainly because there is no permanency to it. I play off peak but I don’t mind being outnumbered by servers with better coverage, I don’t like that keeps are so easy to take down when undefended. I have ninja’d a keep with a 4 man group before so I know how easy it can be.

Playing WvW just makes me miss Warhammer Online for the most part, WAR wasn’t perfect by any means but you felt like you were part of the world and even though things changed hands, the objective was the sack the enemy city. I miss open world RvR where I know my enemies by name, the same guys I fought since level 1. I wish that GW2 WvW was part of the open world, where Humans, Kodan and Norn are in an eternal struggle against the Charr, Dredge and Grawl while the Asura, Sylvari and Tengu attempt to hold the balance.

WvW was fun for me for a good two months, but it just doesn’t have anything to keep me there. I know that my enemies will change eventually, bringing in a new enemy, my keeps and towers will change hands far too often to even care about so it’s just a matter of going through the same motions week in/week out.

Culling and player loading issues.

I can rarely ever see enemies or allies. I’m often mashing tab hoping I can keep a target and it doesn’t turn out to be an illusion. Even far from a large battle I’m often unable to see an enemy approach and they do not load in until I’m nearly dead.

I have never had this problem with any other online game and I’ve played practically all MMO’s. Dropping to lowest possible graphics I still have culling/loading issues.

The simple answer to the OP’s question is rewards.

Let’s look at GW1. In Tombs/HA you got a chest reward that would give a good chance of sigils (worth a lot of gold) and also the best weapon drops (crystalline sword – worth a stinking lot of cash). Also, you got fame/rank and of course a cool emote with it. Rewards were tangible.
In WvW, you get a shockingly low return of badges that give you a terrible armour set or weapons. You win or lose, rinse and repeat every week. There’s just no feeling of progression/reward after a while particularly for the hours you need to invest to make a difference.

All the other things people mention (culling and blah blah) are just incidental compared to the no reward feature.

But I think quite a few people also said “it isn’t fun.” Don’t just pick on the posts that you want to see – there are posts you don’t want to see also.

i think the whole concept of having a random person try to lead a zerg is ridiculous. give us a party system and change the mini map and banish the terrible commander system.

give people the tools to organize themselves instead of throwing them in with nothing but a blue dot. you basically need to follow the blue dot or else you lose everyone else and that’s just broken as far as i’m concerned.

and then of course there’s the attitude that comes with the blue dot that is blown up by having people actually follow you regardless of what you do. most commanders have a hell of an ego, and most commanders are just bad.

I keep wanting to play WvW and sPvP, I have no real issues with those aspects of the game, but the PvE game has been keeping me busy. Mostly it’s just by the time I’m done doing what I want to do in PvE I don’t feel like I have enough time left to really get into the other aspects of the game.

This is pretty odd since I was an avid PvPer in other games. But I’m having tons of fun. so I ain’t complaining. Side bonus is I seem to be avoiding most of the “growing pains” WvW and sPvP are going through. It feels like once I do finally get to them I’ll be getting a much more polished experience.

Seconded. Will never happen though. People like to sit behind their computer monitors and complain. :P

And when they do get it, they find something else to kitten about.

This does /not/ include complaining about something that is game-breaking broken, however. An exploit is an exploit, plain and simple.

I was just thinking that. As it stands now, if u join alone, u pretty much forced to follow this commander zerg, or run some bunker build and roam around alone without any particular goal, while SO much can be done in WvW with good 5 man party. Maybe they should enforce party requirement in WvW, so WvW would become more structured, like AB in original Guild Wars.

5. Anonymity creates no rivalry…which to me is a big part of the PvP fun in an MMO…wanting to hunt specific people down.

Disagree 1000%
ANet did it right by making enemies unable to talk to each other. Last thing I want is some kid with an attitude paging me about how I suck, or how he’s going to kill me after I just killed him.

Wow. Someone needs to go back to school and learn the meaning of the word Anonymity. The poster was talking about being able to know who you are fighting by presenting their name on the screen other than “so and so invader” .

He was stating his own opinion on what would happen if names displayed. Nothing to do with the original posters anonymity definition.

My 5cents to this is, I used to WvW, then they implemented the in combat = death system which was super silly so I have played much less because of that now. They could have simply went with a timer like 10 second log out if in combat as many games have used and very successfully but no, they had to do it this way and with a lot of players suffering this penalty because not of their own incompetence, but the games incompetence (permanent in combat or unaware they’re still in combat after taking a little fall damage or d/c issue while in combat. ) I don’t mind dying as a result of players, but to die to the system…

I did few, but I stopped because:

- Zerg vs zerg

-Smashing door and the next second smashing another door

-Trebs on a structure hitting another structure without the possibility to do something.

-Lords of Nothing (Lords of keeps or structures) being vaporized in 20 sec by zergs

-Small groups are useful but in the end useless

- Commanders do not have a real role except creating a Zerg mass.

-Exploits

- Night capping rewarded as daily capping, but without the same effort.

- Small maps, or too many structures in maps that make feel the maps crowded.

-Lacking of a scout role (rewarded).

-Random badges are just random: Effort not rewarded . You can be the best player and save the world and receive one badge, or just a mindless aoe zergling and being rewarded with more badges.

- Lacking of emphasis of impact on realm by WvWvW, I will spend few words here: Back on DAOC when a realm that held relic got the whole population buffed with 10% of magic damage boost or 10% physical damage boost, depending on which relic you got. Buffs where visible and everyone know that realm was holding a relic. Here we got good buffs, but they are just hidden… if you do not press B you got the impression of nothing, your gaming experience can go on with or without that passive boosts of WvWvW.

I enjoy a lot of aspects of WvW, but the main thing that makes me avoid it are the crippling fps drops. I have a middle-of-the-road machine, but if I encounter more than 10 enemy players I’m down to 5 fps. More than that and not only does it take up to a minute for enemies to render, but I’m reduced to tabbing around and hoping I’ve hit something. Unfortunately there are limited objectives for roamers, so I feel that I’m not contributing unless I’m taking on a heavily-manned objective.

Plus: the 1million and 1 bugs (which admittedly effect more than WvW), and, The zergfest PvDoor setup of it.

Yes I WvW, often actually. I even leveled my second character exclusively in WvW.

We’ve been up against Blackgate for 7 weeks now, with an eight week still coming. Still doesn’t stop me. I have fun, even with the supposed OP thieves (I play Necro and Engi)

I look forward to upcoming changes to WvW as any other player, but I’m still having loads of fun.

I also can’t say I encounter the same issues as many other players seem to (FPS drops, lag etc.) They do happen occasionally, but that can be attributed very easily to my Internet, and happens rarely.

Maybe its because I just play for fun, and winning doesn’t matter all too much. We haven’t won for 7 weeks, and we keep going. I don’t care about the rewards (really, if you actually contribute, repairing shouldn’t make you go broke) and I can still roam, and do well. (Killing Yaks awards points, and deprives the enemy of supply don’t forget) I just find it really fun.

I still enjoy w3 for the most part, I get an hour or two a day after work so I only w3, parking my second character at an orr temple for when I have the karma for another piece of gear. There are some minor problems which can be frustrating sometimes, but the only thing that really bothers me are people with no interest in our servers success loading in for the jumping puzzle and complaining for five minutes to an hour that pvp happened. There’s really no indication to anyone on a server, even to most who play w3, what the rewards are for the server, but then there’s also very little personal gain. Still I enjoy the design enough and the community on our server is pretty solid, nearly as addictive as my old server in Age of Conan.

The rewards aren’t worth the time.

Honor tokens need to drop for every kill you get. Then just raise the cost of WvW weapons, and armor. If I’m going to do WvW for 10 hours, I expect to get an honor token for every person I kill, not 5 over the span of 10 hours.

I’d WvW more if I actually got rewards, but I don’t, and there are skins I’d like to buy. I don’t even know how I’ll complete Quip, since getting tokens is just so stupid slow for me for whatever reason. I hit stuff. I kill folks. But nothing really drops.

I want to, but there are some things that prevent me from enjoying it as much as I think I could:

1) Poor rewards and long periods of no rewards.
-Compared to PvP and PvE maps, WvW has large open spaces of little to nothing. So we’re spending lots of time simply running from point A to point B. That gets old. Once we get to Point B, it could be a long period of no reward leading up to a poor reward: such as a siege stalemate. If you spend a decent amount of time attacking/defending a location with an appropriate number of opposing players – it may take a while. In that process, there will be -lots- of dancing about, ebb and flow, healing and reviving etc. So the end state rewards for the time spent can be fairly small.

2) Siege Weapons
Some points have so many of them, it contributes to point #1. Why can’t Siege Weapons be ‘claimed’ by anyone when not in use? If Team A builds an arrow cart, then loses the point – the only option is for it to be destroyed. This makes sense, why? An arrow cart is an arrow cart, regardless of which colored cloth is tied to its wheels. I’m not advocating for the removal of siege weapons, but I wouldn’t mind seeing them overhauled: Ammunition limitations? Quantity limitations? Enemy Capturing Functionality? Salvaging for Supply?

3) The Colored ‘Teleport Doors’
Players can run [not all make it] through an entire group of hostiles, burn all their survivability/mobility skills and make into a defense point? Lets think about that: If we actually had a heavily armed group of people beating down your door and there was a way to get in, they’d get in! If you opened the door to let your friends come in, your enemies would come in too. I understand that mechanic is unlikely to go away, it just doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense.

4) The Ineffectiveness of Individuals and Small Groups.
The design of WvW favors the large [lag inducing, at times] groups. WvW would be more interesting, for me, if there was more tactics involved instead of ‘everybody move from point A to point B’ which forces the opposing side to do it too. Make undefended spots easier to capture [Less HP on Gate?, ‘Undefended’ Buff on Attackers?], and give rewards to players [up to a daily maximum to limit abuse] who defend places that aren’t being actively attacked. Create more things to Build: Anti-Siege Weapon Bombs, Dolyak Speed Buffs – just create more mechanics that provide individuals and small groups with the ability to break away from the group and accomplish something. That forces the defenders to spread out their defense as well – and now battles are raging map-wide, not just at Point A.

5) Culling, Stealth, and Ride the Lightning.
Partially for reasons above, but it does get annoying watching so many people unwilling to finish a fight they [at least thought] wanted to start.

6) PvE Characters on uneven ground.
I think it should be considered: switch WvW to a PvP style system – everyone is on equal footing in terms of skills unlocked, gear available, etc. Introduce a new currency: Honor. Honor works like Glory and Karma in that it is earned through play and cannot be traded. Honor Vendors sell Skins, Siege Weapons, Commander Books, Bags, Salvage Kits etc. However, unlike PvP I say keep the drops just like PvE. So if you’re a level 10 warrior [in PvE] trying to help out your server in WvW, you can earn Honor to use in WvW but you’ll also earn level 10 appropriate stuff to use/sell back PvE. By doing both Drops AND Honor – Dedicated WvW’ers will have the shiniest stuff [honor vendor skins and Titles] and occasional/casual WvW’ers will still be encouraged to support their server by obtaining things they can take back with them.

I hope this answers the OP’s question.

The rewards aren’t worth the time.

Honor tokens need to drop for every kill you get. Then just raise the cost of WvW weapons, and armor. If I’m going to do WvW for 10 hours, I expect to get an honor token for every person I kill, not 5 over the span of 10 hours.

It takes a week of AC clears (90m each) to get a full soldier set from Ascalonian Catacombs. The same stats that are on the WvW gear and yet it would take an unfathomable amount of time to get the badges required for the WvW set with the same stats. Ridiculous.

4. I dislike having people who bought gold try to boss me around.

I feel the same way. Spending 100G does not grant anyone the right to boss people around. That being said, there are a some commanders I will work with and plenty of other folks who don’t display an icon whose lead I will follow more readily than a commander’s.

I wish before someone could become a commander they had to log in a certain number of WvW hours with that character name AND receive approval to lead from enough WvW regulars.

Dying and having a 20 minute run to get back to the action has been a pretty major barrier.

90 minutes an AC run? ouch that’s slow. I agree that the wvwvw armor is a pain to get. just trying to get the shoulders alone at 229 badges was a grind and a half. they are supposed to be a special kind of gear like t3 cultural, but they look incredibly plain. at least t3 gets you a nice set of gear.

Bristleback can’t hit anything? Let’s fix the HP bug instead.

I dont WvW heavily yet because I am busy leveling all the characters I want, picking a small few to focus on, grind out dungeon sets and fractals…at that point Ill WvW more.
