Do you know if Luck (MF%) affects the Mystic Forge drops? I’m currently on Bday booster + Guild Banner + Food + MF% Bonus, so I run at approx. 265% of Luck. Just not sure where is the best place to farm for the drop. Of course when the Dragons/Temples are on it’s a go, but when they are not, I’m not sure where to go. Frostgorge Champ run? WvW? Or just play an alt and wait for Dragons/Temples?

Magic find does not affect the mystic forge

Ok, thanks for the answer. I won’t try it hehe

Any suggestion regarding the rest of my post?
Thanks!

Save money and buy it. Only precursor I’ve gotten in 2.5k hours was The Chosen from tossing in 3 rare harpoon guns and a trident into the forge for kicks. What sucks is that I’ve witnessed 2 precursors drop in parties I started. :/

Get your Gift of Mastery and your Gift of Fortune, THEN worry about a precursor.. Don’t make the third gift because, what if you get a Dawn instead of Dusk?

Well, don’t expect to get a precursor, just play the game and buy it if you don’t get it as a drop.

i see a lot of disappointment with guild members who have obtained 3/4 Gifts and waiting over a year (for some) for a specific precursor that may never come. honestly thats the dumbest way to go unless you plan on buying the precursor from the TP in the end. the best and most satisfying way to complete a legendary is to knock out both Gift of Mastery & Gift of Fortune FIRST, then wait for a precursor whether you obtain it through some random lucky drop or buy it off the TP. THEN and only THEN should you even think about getting the legendary specific Gift. Even if its not the precursor you wanted, most legendaries sell for a couple thousand gold anyways so that would be more than enough to get the precursor you really want off the TP obtain the other 3 Gifts needed and still have a bit of gold left on the side to rain on you as you jump for joy on your bed with the Legendary weapon you REALLY wanted

Hi guys o/

This post is little old but i think it is appropriate to add my opinion on precursor drop. I think adding numbers about how much chance does someone have to loot precursor from pve is ridiculus, cause i think that is not based on chance how to get it.
I personally played this game close to 2000 hours. Did at least 1000 dungeons, farmed thousands trains. In that time i never saw single precursor drop. Only precursor i saw was storm from MF (at present time my only legendary). And considering how much gold i put in MF i could buy two of those. I was farming collecting rares and exotics (75-80 lvl) and putting them in MF, sometimes i would buy some and do the same. I have little less then 6000ap, but i met people with 10K ap that never saw one pre dropped. Some were even playing and farming 3 times more then me. On the other hand, there are some players who had pre dropped on every lets say about 700 hours of play average or better to say on every 2K AP they saw one pre drop. There are players who spend too much more gold in MF then me and got nothing. I know the case from my friend. Guy put 3K gold in MF in got nothing. He used same weapon type, don’t know which one daggers or gs. And i know one recently case from my guild. Read carefully cause it doesn’t sound real: 3sparks from MF in 2days or barely over 24hours. I bust my myself to farm 3-4K gold in4 months and someone gets that over night. 1st spark was made using only 40rare, and other two didn’t involve more then 200g. He is only over 1K ap. My opinion is that system doesn’t treat us equal, i call this in gaming “born under lucky account number”. Before i didn’t even care about, that i get less good loot then others, but after i started playing a lot (sometimes even 10-12h) it started annoying me.

I witnessed in fractals that someone in my party get pre three times (two times was in Ascalon map and one was on lvl1 and it was spark both times so i think that map is spark map), two times in story dungeon, one time in normal dungeon, one time in one world boss. So that is 7 times in total. There was also one drop that i’m not sure about so i didn’t consider it.

From people i know in game and guildies and some random players i made conclusion. This is just my opinion doesn’t have to be truth. Precursors drop not counting ones from Mystic Forge. I used AP cause i think it is more valuable. I also read some forums. I wanted to make it more simple. This includes about 20 gamers only and i didn’t pick them. When we just happen to talk i would ask sometimes someone or someone would tell me how many times he/she got pre dropped. He or she says me 2 and i see that player have about 7K ap so i count it as 2-3 for 10K. Or if someone says me with 15K ap 5 i count that as 3-4 for 10K and soo on. It is just raw personal observation of me.

Average AP 10K
-bad farmer
-good luck 2-4 pre drop
-bad luck 0-1 pre drop
-good farmer
-good luck 4-6 pre drop
-bad luck 0-2.5 pre drop
I didn’t want to put MF drop opinion cause it includes a lot more data. If someone responds anything to this if i happen to open this page again i will gladly answer or send me whisper in game

Sorry since i’m sure there are some grammar mistakes i wrote this in hurry.

Have a nice day and try not to bother too much about this, it is only a game but we still need to fight there also or go play something else

My guess is it’ll be some token or achievement system, where once you throw a sufficient amount(probably really large), you’ll be rewarded if you are really unlucky.

Thanks for information everyone, its helps a lot.

I will try mystic forge, Jofast event and farm in EB.

Anywhere you can drop a level 80 exotic weapon, you can also drop a precursor. Just don’t count on it ever happening. Even mystic forge is low probability. There are people with over 4000 hours of gameplay that have never dropped one. There are also people that got them off of random level 80 trash mob in their first week of playing.
As people have already advised you, you are far better off farming gold to buy the precursor, because chances of you getting it before you get enough gold to buy it are really low.

Edit: kitten necro, didn’t see the dates on first posts…

Hi Everyone,

I started looking into the idea of precursors last night after about 6 years/2000+ hours of play and still not a single precursor. That is until last night.

So I got curious and started to look up how hard it is to get these. This thread is the only one I’ve found that seems to talk about this. My searches have not turned up any others so either the search function doesn’t work or this is the only thread that talked about it. I’ve been reading what everyone is saying and I figured I would throw in my experience to see if it might throw up another data point of how I got mine.

I am a WvW player most of the time. So I don’t do dungeons, I do story content and have 2 toons that mapped the world. But really my thing is EoTM to level toons, guild events, and EB and BLs to karma farm.

What made this drop interesting is this: I was in EB in a zerg and we charged another zerg near a tower. Playing one of my Elementalists I was able to AOE a bunch of enemy faction players. What made this attack interesting was one of the warriors was equipped with Twilight. You don’t miss a weapon like that.

In the heat of battle I probably hit him a few times as the waves went back and forth. It was a crazy long zerg battle. Then somehow the warrior with Twilight got separated from his allies and I saw him alone, very hurt, and nuked him with my elemental air attacks in sequence to take him all the way down. I got the kill AND the Dusk precursor.

I don’t believe in coincidences and I do absolutely believe luck was involved in getting the Dusk drop. But I find it extremely interesting I got it after killing a warrior wielding Twilight.

Same here. World completion, a few dungeons, many, many WvW chests. Only Siege Commander Spoons. And the price of the precursors on the trading post is rising faster than my gold is. I’ll wait for the HoT precursor crafting. Hopefully it is accessible enough to actually get one out of there.

Played since headstart as well, just got my 3rd year bday present… They use RNG > Which is impossible to actually be random. They can use a Pseudorandom number generator which is a large number, but it will eventually repeat. Assuming they use a seed for each account, some accounts will always land on the higher end of the RNG spectrum while others will repeatedly land on the lower end. I have come to accept that I myself will never see a legendary, a precursor, an ascended chest (armor or weapon). I have watched players get 2-3 precursors in a night. Several Ascended Chests in the same night and all it does is discourage me more. I took a 7 month hiatus where I only got on for a few minutes at a time, killed a few mobs then just remembered how much I hate not having any luck, so I’d log off again.

Once I accepted that I will never get good drops, I decided just to run with the guild and play some WvW. Maybe one day the system will be fixed or they will make account seeds change every so often to allow other players some luck for once.

Based on another active thread in the crafting section, the Mystic Forge drop rate for a precursor (using x4 Legendary weapons @ 80th) is estimated to be at around .3% for each Forge combine. With this in mind, I’m guessing that the open world drop rate is even lower.

That can’t be right? 3 in 1000? That sounds like a lot.
It’d explain why overall, Legendaries aren’t all that difficult to acquire in GW2, granted. But is a rather high rate considering the drop rates add to this.

The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

This is something I get strong feelings about. A lot of guild mates playing the game in a similar way than me got 3-6 precursors (around 3-4k hours playtime) just through playing.

I myself never had single drop, more so I dumped items worth 1-2k gold into the forge to get no single precursor. It seems like I am doomed. And although I know this will change for the future it seems so unfair? I mean if a colleague or coplayer gets 1 precursor in this time, okay, but 6? And me nothing? It just seems kittened up.

Played since release and I only personally know of one person that ever got a precursor drop (not counting the people that got them farming the original megakarka event in the first LS event)

My advice to anyone that wants a precursor is simply to spend their time stockpiling legendary crafting mats in stead, and wait for the precursor crafting masteries in HoT.

The Masteries should be infinitely more fun as they’re all sort of thematic quests/scavenger hunts, and they don’t have the potential to waste your time.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in this game, it’s that you should never ever do anything with the intention of it rewarding you with a randomly dropped precursor.

I’ve lost more money in the forge than I care to admit trying to get Dusk. For the most part I made back 40% or so of that money back selling the exotics that I did get, but still no Dusk.

Ultimately I saved up money to outright buy it on the TP. That is hands-down your only guaranteed method to get it.

So you can either bang your head against a wall waiting for a drop, waste potentially hundreds of gold in the forge with no result, or save up and get it guaranteed.

I will try mystic forge, Jofast event and farm in EB.

You can farm what ever you want. The actual drop rate is insignificant enough that you could farm for 1 week straight without sleep and not see ANY precursor drop.

There is a reason why many players with 2-4 thousand hours of gameplay have not seen even 1 precursor drop.

Your best current bet is to play the mystic forge, and expect to not get anything out of it even with hundreds of gold.

Or you could wait 13 more days and try for precursor crafting with HoT which seem like it would be your best bet as far as risk vs reward vs timesink goes.
