Hmmm another statement i found by Linsey Murdock. Since i do not have direct access to ask her questions i figured i would post on the forum for some feed back. I googled your name and came across this website (See below link)

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/User:Linsey_Murdock

“My official title at ArenaNet is Game Designer. I started out working on Guild Wars at the tail end of development on Factions as a quest designer and spawner. I continued in that role through Nightfall, EotN and the BMP. Then I went to work on GW2 events for about a year while continuing to do projects for GW1 on the side. In May 2008 I was tapped to head up the newly formed Guild Wars Live Team which I did for 2 years. Now I’m back on GW2, working on the Story Team.”

Below is her statement on how they wanted to make a “Sense of Satisfying Progression” rather then “gear grind”.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/

“We have always worked hard to create a sense of satisfying progression rather than gear grind and this new item progression initiative is no exception. By adding challenging new combat mechanics to end-game content and ways to mitigate those mechanics through gear progression for high-end players, we can add personal progression without making the game feel like an endless treadmill of gear that is just out of your reach. Original Guild Wars fans may recognize that we took a familiar approach to our new progression”

By Linsey Murdock on November 13, 2012

My Question. The original intent for GW2 was for players to get to max gear (exotic) at which point you begin to play for the content (as opposed to playing to gear up). you seem to have completely given up on this idea, so now we play to gear up???. Once we’re done gearing up, will you introduce the next level of gear? Or will we begin to play for content?

As a “Original Guild Wars fan” i feel like GW2 is going in the complete wrong direction with ascended weapons.

Although I don’t think the ascended problem is that big, or even a problem really, I have to laugh at the “Original Guild Wars fans may recognize that we took a familiar approach to our new progression” part. The only thing familiar about this ascended weapon/armor deal is the naming of the materials used.

I don’t think ascended gear is wrong as a concept, just how they executed it, they’re trying to make it like the 15k gear from Guild Wars but it’s not working

Not that it matters as ANET does not care at all for us who stuck with them for over 7 years or bought the game with these and many other articles in mind.

The game is all about farmers, grind and progression now.

I love this part

“Fun impacts loot collection. The rarest items in the game are not more powerful than other items, so you don’t need them to be the best. The rarest items have unique looks to help your character feel that sense of accomplishment, but it’s not required to play the game. We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional, so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.”

GW2 was meant to be “play however you want and get max stat gear however you want: karma, tokens, crafting, wvw, loot” not “grind x and y to get max stat gear”.
Next time read the articles before replying.

well if you think about it, when the armor is released it will be like a new tier because you have to start grinding all over again. and as far as i remember, he said ascended was the last tier probably for this year.

One of the PAX interviews had Colin stating that in his view, Ascended should be the last tier. Here you go.

The whole “this year” thing comes from the fact that the interviewers were asking weighed questions. Basically, they were phrasing it “Will there be more tiers later this year?” instead of “Will this be the last tier of gear?”. Answering the latter with a “no” just results in people making “brilliant deductions” that it means the same as “There will be more tiers next year”. Which is obviously false.

How can i trust someone who lied to me before and took me for a fool to believe those lies? Not only that but they broke their original promises to us as well.
And them saying it is the last tier does not mean they cant raise levels or infusions.

But hey that is not all of it by the slightest. The direction the game is going is being dictated by these decisions. It has been for over a year now!

Before ascended gear virtually every single aspect of the game was crystal clear. Now the game is like the water around Orr: muddy and smelling of dead fish.
ANET not only has abandoned their promises but not given us any real solid indication where this game is going and what the values of it should be. I dont know about you but i d hate to invest further time in this game if the content next year is gonna be as pathetic as it was this one while actively catering to farmers and adding grindy mechanics just to keep people playing as long a possible.

I m here because i wanted to play the game pointed out in that article, not some wannabe WoW clone with progression, grinding for stats and meaningless content. There are plenty of those games on the market and i never asked GW2 to become such a game.

Wrong. Colin said it ‘should’ be the last tier of gear, not that it ‘would’ be the last tier of gear. Additionally, this has been the position of Anet since last November, i.e., there are no plans currently for additional tiers of rarity. The important distinction here is that they plan to continue the gear grind of vertical progression through continuous upgrades (on a low power curve) to the current max tier gear. I have all the quotes to this effect from the AMA last November, but I would suggest you read it to understand where they are actually at vis-a-vis vertical progression.

So, you can see that even if the ‘should’ was a true ‘would’ it wouldn’t stop the gear grind. Everyone will continue to grind out ever more powerful infusions, which is pretty much 180 degrees from the vision of the game at release.

I have quit the game after i get to it, that you need to craft it yourself and i only have one Char with one Crafting Job cause i hate crafting, now i am forced to craft for my ascended weapon which is a must in WvW.

This is just put time in something i do not want, and Anet say loud you can achieve everything on your way. Cannot see this.

My Main is Engi and even if i have a ascended Weapon my kits do not get better with ascended. So this patch turns my love for Guild Wars2 in pure hate.

Stop trolling?! LOL – ok, you stick to your current belief and moan whatever you like. Maybe actually go away and play another game seeing as this is so game-breaking for you and you being hell-bent on insisting another tier of gear that isn’t announced is incoming, in particular since Anet have gone out of their way in several channels lately to say, no we’d rather do something else to not do that again.

They know Ascended gear wasn’t appreciated when introduced in November, but they did say back then it would be trinkets, weapons and armor, to fill the gap because exotics became a much too easily acquirable tier of gear. Ascended gear isn’t… you do the maths on crafting it now; they got the tier that I think they originally intended Exotics to be, with only the Legendary being more time-consuming. People raged back then; it’s just really silly to see the same rage when the rest of the ascended gear now does get released over half a year later… didn’t you critics kitten enough about it back in November – in fact, didn’t half of you quit and swear to never come back…

I’m fine with the change as it stands now; I’ll be really surprised if the do add more levels but if they were to, I’d be very interested to see the justification. But I remain firm in my belief Anet stay true to their words now.

Why would you ever work toward something that was insignificant? What’s the incentive of spending your laurels on more power if the power increase is so low as to be insignificant?

Anet did not implement vertical progression to provide the player base with an insignificant stat increase. They implemented it to provide players with a non-optional power curve for the players to climb. That’s the purpose of VP and why game developers use it. If you understand a number series (1,2,3,4,…n) then you understand VP and you also know that the offer it makes can’t be refused.

You may not call it a grind, but in game design theory it is the very definition of a gear grind.

“Justification” will be exactly the same as it was in november.

+they will make you grind so much for new gear that it will put Korean grinders to shame. I dont think you actually realize what they intend to make you grind for even within this tier (if they continue on the direction they are now. If they change direction you can thank me later, though ill be long gone)

I’m guessing you haven’t actually played very many korean mmos to make that claim.

As with any business, trust is hard to earn but easy to lose.

GW1 – arenanet earned that trust.

GW2 – throughout all the crap I’ve been put through, they lost that trust and will be treated the same as other game companies we despise.

Actually they very specifically and very deliberately provided players with an optional power curve.

What evidence do you have to the contrary?

I’ll be happy to break it down for you. BTW, no where did they say that their intent was to create an optional power curve or gear grind. I’ve read everything on the subject and you won’t find your distinction there at all. But, I’ll be happy to describe it’s non-optional nature for you.

So, what they implemented last November was vertical progression. They said this explicitly and said that it would be on a low power curve. So, what is vertical progression? Everything you need to know about VP is present in the words that make up the concept. Vertical: the power level of the game increases, Progression: in increases periodically and continuously over time. And, this process can be described as an integer series, 1,2,3,4,…n, where each number represents an increase to the power level of the game. You’ll note that it is an infinite series because VP doesn’t progress by stopping. That’s VP in a nutshell as to it’s process. So, what does this tell us about the optional nature of VP? You don’t have to be a math major to understand that VP describes a non-optional grind. Let’s say the difference between power level 1 and power level 2 is immaterial and can be safely ignored. It is self-evident that there will come a point where the difference is not immaterial but rather significant. That’s due to the simple nature of a number series. If you understand an ascending number series you both understand VP and the fact that it is non-optional.

This is my proof of the non-optional quality of VP. We’ve talked about the nature and process of VP, but what about it’s purpose? Game developers introduce VP for two primary reasons: 1) to provide players with a sense of character progression, and 2) to motivate continued play. It is the second purpose here that has to do with it being non-optional. Because we are talking about the power level of the game, and since it’s ascending, players are motivated to follow the power curve. Long term, if players wish to continue playing, they realize that they must keep up with the power increases that developers periodically implement to keep them playing.

Bottom line, to understand VP is to understand that it describes a non-optional gear grind. This is not my idea of VP but rather it’s simply understanding its definition and purpose in gaming.

I suspect that all ANet has to do to motivate most people to want ascended gear is slap +2 power on it over exotics. It may not have to be meaningful. (finger’s crossed cause I’m not farming dragonite)

Obtaining ascended gear isn’t fun. It’s purely reward driven, because the game is purely reward driven. Content is not challenging and if it is the rewards are interestingly less than those that are not. The greatest rewards available are not a matter of skill, nor completion of challenging content, nor difficult to obtain. They are strictly a gauge of how much time a given player has relegated to obtain the reward.

Fun is not in the design scope. Skill is not in the design scope.

I’ll be happy to break it down for you.

You used an enormous number of words to provide no concrete evidence whatsoever. Nothing- literally nothing- that you typed in that post adequately defines reaching the top of the power curve in Guild Wars 2 as non-optional. You provide no examples and attempt to prove that obtaining best-in-slot gear in every slot is required with logical assertions that essentially stipulate “larger numbers are bigger than smaller numbers, and if you’re good at math you’ll understand why this proves my point.” But your argument absolutely hinges on this statement:

It is self-evident that there will come a point where the difference is not immaterial but rather significant.

You can’t just say it’s self-evident. I’m asking you to provide evidence. If such a point does come then your interpretation of what Ascended gear is for will be correct. Such a scenario would provide you with an example of the sort I was asking you for.

But thus far that scenario does not exist, nor does anything remotely close. None of the content in the game requires you to have Ascended gear; none of the content in the game even requires you to have Exotic gear. The exception of course is Fractals, but this is solely and completely because of the need for Agony Resistance, and is not at all dependent on the increase in statistical power afforded by the tier upgrade.

I think what you’re correctly identifying here is that ArenaNet is definitely catering to a powerful desire of certain players (especially those used to more traditional MMO conventions) to progress, even feeling as though they have “nothing to do” in the sense of continued play unless there is something requiring some degree of time investment to improve their power level.

This is wholly distinct from whether or not doing so is optional.

My much simpler assertion to counter yours would be that it is optional, because it is not required.

I would like to know where the gap came from between exotic and legendary? Once I got exotic on all my characters I went out and did what I want and had fun, again doing what I wanted. There was no gap. I did not care about the legendary because it was still on the same level as exotics.
However that is not the case anymore. Now I have to farm specific materals mobs etc just to make one weapon, which with my play schedule will take a long time, for just one. Right now it feels like I am playing the way Anet wants me to play instead of the way I want to.
Anet needed to bring out more content instead of gear to bridge the gap. I for one thought there was not gap, but to each their own.

If the gear is not required for anything, why even have it at all?

not sure how one set of gear constitutes an “endless gear treadmill” lol.

Do you guys even know what endless means? How about treadmill?
