I didn’t know where to post such a request so I’m hoping that if this is not the appropriate place then you can forward it to where it needs to go.

I’ve been playing guild wars with the same group of people since around Factions from the original Guild Wars. We’re all 30 – 50 years old, most of us married and all of us, spouses included, have played Guild Wars together for around 10 years. We’ve become good friends over the years, some visiting others IRL, and a couple even moving to be closer to another couple just because they became such good friends. The consistent enjoyment through the years has been Guild Wars, people have come and gone from the guild but there was a core that always stayed together.

A week ago today, June 4th, a member of our tight knit group was killed in a car accident. He was cut off by a semi trailer, he was able to swerve just enough to ensure that the full impact of the crash happened on his side of the vehicle, sparing the life of his son who was in the passenger seat. This was an incredibly shocking tragedy and has shook his family and our “gaming family” to its core. His wife, who also plays, has been battling cancer for some time now and to watch something so horrible happen to such an amazing couple has been heart breaking.

I’m emailing to request a small gesture that would mean the world to our gaming family. Is it possible to place a monument or grave marker of some sort in our upcoming guild hall? Somewhere prominent, somewhere that we can all gather in game to pay our respects, tell stories, or just be there to feel like there is still a part of him playing with us.

I’ll be happy to privately provide his account info and anything else you might need if you could make this happen.

You really don’t know how much something like this would mean to us all. Thanks for your time and all of the memories, regardless of the answer.

I am a member of this group of exceptional people. As such, I would really love to honor our guild leader in this way. He was the first to help his guildies, and usually the last to sign off each night. He would keep us all from getting too upset during trying runs or dungeons ect, with a joke and a kind word of encouragement.
Please, help us honor his memory.

I think it’s a great idea too. I got to visit Doug and Terrie on several occasions because of work and they’re both just good people. Being able to commemorate our friend in game would be a way for all of us to come together, in one place to pay respects to a friend that meant a lot to all of us.

When Roger ‘Oldroar’ Rall died, Anet named a server after him and even made a charr mention a passed away but well loved Tribune Rall Oldroar after him.

When Wynthyst died, Anet added a gravestone for her under the name Thyst in Ebonhawke.

It would not be out of place to add something for this.

And to tao and the others, sorry for your community’s loss.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Sorry to hear that man… always sucks losing friends.. especially tragically.

I can get behind something like this as long as it is a part of an instanced environment, such as a guild hall. I dont think they could acquiesce to something like this in an open world setting though, as you would have everyone in their mother wanting to do this for the same reasons or just to see a name immortalized in a game.

konig, were those names of people that worked at Anet or contributed to the development of the game in some way? just curious as it was my understanding they did things like that for the staff of the game. I could be wrong in that assumption though.

The man mentioned in this was my father, and truly, he was a wonderful man. He devoted so much time to the game and even getting his children to play with him. He loved the game and everyone in the community to the moon and back, and while I understand a gift like this is somewhat far-fetched, it’d be something I know he’d love with everything he has! As for it being something everyone would start asking for, I think if adding custom monuments/statues to a guild’s hall became an available addition to the update, then it would be something everyone could enjoy and cherish

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss. I too have made lasting friends from GW1, although most moved on from GW2 rather quickly.

It’s a great idea to make a commerative icon in-world, however unless its already in the code and future guild masters can lay down similar items I don’t see it happening. Anet will not allow themselves to favor one instance. In doing so they will open themselves up to future requests which may or may not be factual. I can list other practical reasons why, but you get the idea.

I think a player-driven memorial service would have a great impact on remembering your fallen leader. Something to think about.

Sorry for your loss.

If guildhalls are customisable, I think it would be fantastic to be able to place a statue of your choosing in the guildhall (using the statues and monuments that we already have in-game). The statue would also have an interact feature on it, which can be edited to display whatever message you’d like.

This way, many guilds could use the feature- for paying respect to lost loved ones or celebrating guild members on their successes.

Some sort of memorial in the guild hall for deceased guildies or other sorts of tributes would be great. I hope ANet looks into it. I know tributes to people that have passed on have been asked for before and this would be the most appropriate way.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

I love this idea and really would like to see Anet implement something like this. GW1 had services in those guild halls, I think it would be great to include some sort of statue/monument that the guild can come together and choose and dedicate in a place of prominence.

Wyn did a lot of work for the Guild Wars 1 Wiki, but Rall was just a big general gaming community person who was looking forward to GW2 but died before its release.

Neither did stuff for the staff, afaik.

Firstly, speaking as someone who is dealing with the one year anniversary of my mother being diagnosed with cancer (she passed 4 months and two days later), I can certainly empathize with your grief and you all (friends and family) have my sincerest sympathies and heartfelt prayers.

Secondly, I wanted to direct this specifically to the Anet Team. I consider myself fortunate to now consider myself a dedicated GW2 player. I find this reply amazing for the fact that the game I came from, the CM’s were very often snarky (bordering on hateful-imagine telling a player their concerns were “inconsequential”!) and largely disinterested in things like this. I find it refreshing to have a and be a part of a community that INCLUDES the Anet team.

I sincerely hope Anet finds a way to make this idea work.

If everyone who dies here on this planet as a GW2 gamer would receive a monument or gravestone whatever, the Field of the Fallen in our new Lions arch would be soon bigger, that the town itself …

Sorry, that I’m now the realistic mood destroyer here, and I can absolutely understand the feelings and the reason behind this request, but seriously, this is the first MMORPG ever Ive tseen, where so many people think, they should have or even go so far to say “deserve” (not in this case) to get some kind of attention through threads like this, so that they get a special place in the GAME (seriosuly, wtf for do you need this in a game) to mourn.

If that person that died there meant so much to you, then you mourn at his REAL grave and use this maybe also as an opportunity to come together as a guild to get to know each other in real better, if you haven’t done something like that yet as a “Gaming Family” when you play as you say for over 10 years together.

A digital gravestone/monument won’t make Doug come back to live.
The stuff Konig mentioned did go in my opinion already too far ..
GW2 is in first line a GAME and not a memorial for dead people.

However, Ive also nothing against it, if ANet adds in regard of Guild Halls some kind of feature that lets have the Guild Hall instance some kind of own “Field of the Fallen”, where you can create Gravestones.
As an implemented gameplay feature, there is nothing to be said against that.

But always coming here into the forums, pressing kittento the tear gland in hope, that Anet reacts on it and grants you your wish to give a dead prson some kind of special memorial – I don’t know, I personally absolutely don’t find that this is right and that this would be something that the dead person in question would find ok too that you literally “beg for him/her” for attention.

Now you can kill me for being the mood killer :P, but I think this opinion has the same right to be expressed, like everyone else one too, even if it doesn’t jump onto the support wagon too.
I support Gravestones as Guil Hall Feature! (just to be clear)

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

Personal loss is terrible but asking a video game developer who has no personal relationship to the deceased to erect a digital monument is just silly.

Make your own game and build a monument.

But should inscribing text on a structure in the guild hall for all to see be a welcomed feature ? Yes.

I do think something like this is needed. I’ve been playing MMO since 2003 and I’ve seen it happen many times. Guild mates, guild leaders, friends who die as a result of disease, accident, violence… and leave a community in distress and in need of some visual remembrance, some closure. And a memorial plaque or other object that the guild itself can inscribe/name helps.

OP and guild… I am sorry for your loss. And I hope ANet can make this happen.

Orpheal, you have the right to an opinion about having a memorial in the game, but you don’t have a right to tell people how to grieve. If they want to mourn their loved ones in the game, let them. It doesn’t harm you in the least.

OP, I’m sorry for your loss. Hopefully the devs will be able to do something for you. I think this would be a nice feature to include for guildhalls.
