nice. grats dude! now, wouldn’t it be nice if the next thing to be restored is the faith in Anet when they finally release precursor crafting? that’s like gifting the whole population a way to create their own legendaries, not just see these rare miracles happen on one or two people? that would be nice eh devs?

Aw that is lovely. Congratulations pdavis. You seem like a nice person from reading your posts so I would say the gifts have found a deserving home.

Once, in the bad old days of the Queensdale train a fellow participant posted a link in map chat to the Stardust bow he had just received as loot. I wrote back, ‘congrats’ or something similar. The next minute I received an email from the player gifting me the bow. Not quite on the same level perhaps but to me it was the most amazing thing that anyone could have done. I smiled for hours afterwards.

i hope both of them does not get banned by the auto ban system.

the auto ban system likes to flag such activities as “gold selling” and then bans people.

I encountered a very similar occurrence. A long time ago I was in Queensdale killing fish in the lake near the troll and someone linked Impaler into chat saying that they had just gotten it from a champ bag. I congratulated them and mentioned that I find it to be one of the best looking spears and that I was currently saving up to buy one for when I got my character to 80. A moment later I got a mail with the weapon in it. I was shocked. I responded that I was grateful but that I could not accept it. They said they had already gotten several of them and that they were just going to salvage it and insisted that I keep it. I was very happy. I still have and use it to this day and also remember who it was that had given it to me.

I hope not, because that would be bad. Also the dev posting on this, basically approving of such things it seems unlikely.

well, hopefully not.
in the past, i have guild members wrongly banned due to the stupid auto ban system:

example 1: notious mailed 200g to dusty, dusty then mailed back 200g after receiving the 200g achievement. both were “permanently” banned. both got back their accounts after a few days without able to play guild wars 2.

example 2: sven’s friend send sven some 35g and some tier 6 materials. both were “permanently” banned. again, both got back their accounts after a few days.

yes, a red tag may have replied in here, but the person monitoring the auto ban system may not be aware of your topic here. and i dun think they communicate very well with one another.

anyway, congrats!

I wish the game itself was as generous/practical with it’s rewards.

Nah, philantrophy is so much better than actually fixing the system, especially for that ‘feel-good’ effect and similar purposes.

A wonderful story. I’ll add in a much lesser good deed that still meant a lot (and it helps that it was a good deed done by a large number of people):

Last night I was escorting a guildie through LS as she’s been away a bit and missed it. She didn’t even know what to expect in The Machine. So very late for us east coasters, gritty eyed and falling asleep, we got to the Frostgorge part, coming in while farmers were eking out champions. I asked if the event could be finished, there was polite discussion, and all agreed to not finish the one they were on but to do the next one aimed at finishing.

So a whole zerg dedicated a run to getting me and my guildie through that LS step! We were beyond grateful, but had to hop into the instance to complete it and then log out for bed; we could only say brief thank yous at the time.

Icing on the cake: Somewhere in one of those champ bags I got from doubling up on the event, I got an Ascended Rampager’s Chest Armor item. My very first Ascended drop ever other than fractal rings. I fell asleep happy

I’ll chime in and say congrats. This is typical of the Guild Wars 2 community as a whole from what I see in my daily rounds: Players taking opportunities when they see them to make someone else’s day.

The gestures are all different sizes, and it’s not about being able to attach a monetary value to the item given or hold it up and say that it meets a certain list of standards. The common thread in all of these is a player seeing that they can offer something nice to another, and taking the opportunity to do so with no hesitation or expectation of reward. It’s a great thing that happens constantly in Tyria. Thanks for sharing yours!

I could tell you a story about good deed.

One time, I had a character who had a personal story called, “Victory or Death” which it was at Arah. There are several people hanging out at Arah and they were doing nothing but just hanging out. So, I asked if anybody wanted to do the personal story and they said sure. They were glad that I asked because nobody wanted to do “Victory or Death” with them because I had read that other people wanted to do personal story themselves instead forcing them to ask people around to help them with the personal story.

I told them I am glad to help anyone who need to get their personal story completed. It made me feel good to help one another to complete their journey here in Guild Wars 2. I don’t see why people just ignore and not even help those who was new to Arah personal story. Which it was sad to see other people not doing their good deeds.

I am glad that OP had his precursor and I wanted to say congratulation! I am glad to see someone “paying it forward” to do some good deed. I been here for two years and still trying to get a scepter precursor. If I still don’t have one, it is all about having fun and helping other players which I’m glad to help out.

I have seen many cases of good deeds and helpful players. I’ve had mesmers port me to impossible vistas (I’m looking at you EB green keep!!), I’ve had people help me with skill points and champs. I’ve helped others with the same. I really think there are a lot of really nice people in the community, and I’m glad when players like pdavis actually “vocalize” that kindess on the forums, because it doesn’t happen enough.

Still, congratulations

RNG from the forge or a drop is the only way to get precursors for now anyway, Someone could potentially get on on the first world boss they ever kill. To me, getting a precursor as it stands isnt an accomplishment, its pure luck.

But anyway, grats to the OP.

This is partly due, in my opinion, to the systems the development team has put in place. There is no mad rush for levels, you get scaled up in pvp. There is no mad rush for gear, Exotic at 80 is relatively easy to get, ascended isnt a huge amount better, its more of a simple long term goal and your have pvp gear all equalized. loot and nodes are instanced meaning no competition in farming. Kill credit goes to all participants, not just the best individual/party. It is really set up to be a welcoming game rather than something where you always have to watch your back because you are afraid someone might steal your kills/nodes/loot whatever.

I’m sorry, but someone who mails you something as a gift shouldn’t be doing so hoping you’ll send it back. That is just silly. If someone sends me something BY MISTAKE, then yes, I would send it back. If it is truly a gift (and I have personally sent guildies stuff they needed to make various legendaries) then I would never expect the person receiving it to send it back. I see no need or reason for you to judge the recipient as “bad” because they accept the gift that someone gave them.

It was a donation yes. The “transaction” (if you will) was discussed several days in advance before the actual item was sent. The sender say a post of mine discussing precursors, and was impressed that I wasn’t raging or QQing about the prices or RNG but was actually seeking ways to best work toward buying it combined with using the mystic forge. They were leaving the game, as were looking to donate most of their stuff. I wasn’t asking for a handout, nor expecting one. It totally came out of the blue. If they were looking to give it away, and were picky about who got it, of course I am going to accept it. To do otherwise would be an insult to them. Why should I deny the giver the chance to be blessed by letting my pride get in the way and not accept such a gift?

Real life story. Several years ago, there was an older man at my church. One sunday, he came up to me, and pressed $100 dollars into my hand, and said “I was asked to take care of you. Hope this helps.” Then turned around and left. A couple of weeks later, the same thing happened. And again another couple of weeks. Of course I thanked him profusely each time I saw him. But seeing the sheer joy on his face as he gave me the money was worth accepting his gifts each time. While I received a couple of hundred dollars, I strongly believe that he still got the better end of the deal.

If someone wants to randomly give something to somebody, no strings attached, but just wants to be a positive influence in their lives, even just for a short moment, that is great!! I’m not going to stop them. Far be it from me to deny them that chance. I don’t feel accepting this gift in anyway makes me a “mooch” or “less of a man” or anything. I think it takes more to accept something like that, than it does to reject it. But thats just me.

For me it doesn’t lessen the feeling of having completed a goal. I suppose one could look at this as another form of RNG. Either way it was luck. Amd for that I am grateful and happy. But yes, its all about having fun and helping players. And thats what makes this community so cool. There are so many nice, friendly and helpful people all over the place.

It’s a great thing that happens constantly in Tyria. Thanks for sharing yours!

I can attest to this on several occasions some to me and some of the things I’ve given because this community is awesome.

Very early on in the game I was making a set of Corrupted weapons for my Norn Ranger, and one kind soul one day just sent me a bunch of Corrupted Lodestones to help me finish them off.

I later went and did the same thing for someone else.

A few months ago when the Lovestruck weapons came out I was talking to someone in map chat and we got on a conversation about matching weapons to armors and I offhandedly mentioned going out in search of one of the new GS skins. A random stranger sent me the GS skin from the kindness of their heart.

I later bought someone a Tormented LB skin from an extra ticket I had.

The latest thing someone gave me was a Foefire’s Essence GS and the 119g to get my T3 Sylvari Gear. I still haven’t paid this one forward just yet I am waiting for the right random stranger to pop into my life.

Other than those things there has been many a time I’ve been borrowed money, or taken on a run or other such things that I have been equally grateful for. One of my most fond memories in the game was when the Account Bound Dye system came out, there were several of us in guild that got a bunch of unID’d dyes from it and we spent the afternoon in Vigil Keep Map Chatting Dyes to give to random people it was so fun. And another fond memory I have was running into a new player in LA one day they messaged me about how “cool” one of my toons looked and we sat talking. And while we were talking I was going through my bank, I found a buncha mini pets, and some left over things in my bank and I just mailed them to them. They were so adorable when they see it. He even named the mini polar bear after me. So cute. And a final fond memory I have was also a recent one, I have a second account and I went on it to do a social experiment, I went around asking questions in map chats and various bits of the games pretending like i was new to the game and everyone that went out of their way to help me I sent gold to, there was one individual who went above and beyond with trying to help me, so when I logged onto my main account I sent them 150g and told them thank you. It was awesome to see so many people come to my aid as a “newbie” to the game as well.

Long story short is the community in general is amazing here and it’s so nice to see that people are like me in the willingness to help others when they least expect it. I know I was floored every time I was ever given anything, and floored more when I have given something out and had people be so grateful. It makes me feel good to make others feel good. and I cant’ wait for the next person I am able to put a smile on their face with a small gesture of my fortunes.

Keep it up, GW2 Community!

EDIT: I wanted to add in another story. in July the guild I was an officer in Boss Blitz Bros [BBB] was contacted by Mike Z. from ArenaNet to thank us for pulling the community together in support of doing the Boss Blitz event, and he sent us a Bonfire from the gem shop so we could have an extra Karma Bonfire at our Blitz =) I remember talking to Mike Z for a good hour or so after that. It was the most cool thing from a dev I’ve ever seen in a game and it was a topic of conversation for days afterward in our TS. RIP [BBB]!

RIP [BBB]!

That. Is. AWESOME!!!

Yeah there are a bunch of really cool people out there!! Just got to take some time to get to know them

Congratulations, dude.
I’ve never gotten a gift of that size before, but when I started playing the Trading Post for a way to make a bit of extra money, a veteran of vending taught me what to do and gave me 10 gold as seed money. I found him a few weeks later, and tried to pay him back and he refused me.

xD

I play Fort Aspenwood, I lead the 8 member guild, Sacred Storm [Strm] I am Jason Goes Mental.
I don’t raid, I barely fractal, and I suck beyond words at PvP and WvW.
But I try, and that’s what counts.

This community is full of people that are kind and giving. When I started out, some random person gifted me a greatsword for my guardian while I was doing a heart quest. I’ve also had people gift me dyes and other various weapons. I’ve always paid it forward and will continue to do so as it helps foster a much better community for us – in my opinion. I love the game.

Congrats @pdavis I can’t imagine the feeling of that happening! It’s so uplifting hearing a story like that, but it also makes me wish it would happen to me too haha. Only problem is that The Legend is 500g more expensive.. looks at Zommy if only x)

@zelanard

Yay!! Glad to see people encouraged and inspired yes there are some amazing people and things going on all the time, yet its not nearly often enough that such deeds are acknowledged and made known. hopefully we can change that.
