The question is not why I would buy these, as many have bought them. Not everyone has the time to play the game enough to earn 500 stones. (I do have a little over 100 on my main account, at least 50 of which were purchased when on sale.) However, to answer your question, if I have none, and I have a set of armor (phoenix) that I wanted on my new necro from the time I created her until level 80, and want to maintain the look throughout, then the stones are needed. Why I bought them, however, has absolutely no relevance to the low rate at which Anet is exchanging them.

Additionally you don’t know the cost of appearance modification.

It could take 1 crystal for an entire wardrobe change. That would mean ANET is giving you free stones.

Edit: the above is false information according to the video provided by the blog.

I want ANET to make money…I WANT them to pay their developers. The more money they make, the better content they can give us. This is why when I am happy with them, I buy gems. If I am angry at something they do, I don’t. I want them to see when something is good vs something bad and to do more of the good and less of the bad.

If they don’t make money, you wont have new content because they cannot pay their developers…which means cutting staff.

If you like the game….don’t complain about stuff that costs a minimum of money. Especially, as someone points out…you can indeed buy gems with gold.

this is not a good monetary system, it is dissatisfactory to most buyers. Really think about it in real life, how much clothes do you have, have much clothes do you rent. Maybe a tux for a wedding, thats it. Clothes renting is a bad model. You are not increasing selection, or the desire for the goods, if you have to pay everytime you change clothes.

I disagree. It is very satisfactory to me. IF you want to use a real-life example. This is more akin to me, an average person being able to buy an expensive suit…and then sharing that with my whole family…my wife, my kids, everyone can use it and they only have to pay a few dollars to have it “altered” to them….as a matter of fact, I can buy that single $1000 suit and ALL of us can wear it for a few dollars a piece rather than having to pay $1000 for each one.

In real life, I would gladly do that….I would love it if we only had to buy a single concert T-shirt once, but have it available for the whole family….or my wifes dresses would automatically turn into fancy Pant / shirt combo’s when I pay my couple dollars to “alter” them.

Oh the money I would save on clothing having a single “warddrobe” for my whole family!…even with the “alteration” charge….which is a fixed amount, which means I can save up for it if I want to!

except, you are considering only the suit, and not the vast bulk of your clothes, which you in fact spend more money on in total throughout your life.

you know your brown pants, and your jeans, and black pants with the black belt, and the blue shirt with the boat on it.
All of which you will never buy because while the shirt only costs 10 dollars, and only looks good on sunny days, it costs 100 dollars to alter it, and 100 dollars the next time you want to put on the suit again.
so everyone is walking around only in the most expensive suits, and only really interested in getting one or two garments.

its a bad system if you want to encourage fashion and make people buy/desire more clothes in general.

We don’t know yet if that is the cost because of the rarity of the armor. I’m not aware if those items are ascended, but ascended armors could very well cost more charges, while legendaries will require quite a few.

One way to address this would have been to require 3 transmutation charges to change one gear piece if the character is level 80 and 1 if not, then having crystals provide 3 charges and stones 1. This would preserve the status quo.

However, there’s another way to do that — by having 1 charge work for transmuting 3 gear pieces for lower levels and 1 for 80’s. The only problem with doing it that way is (potentially) losing out if only changing 1 gear piece on an under-80. Whether this is how the system will work, of course, remains to be seen — but it clearly will not be working as outlined in my first paragraph.

One benefit for the new system is that if I set a “look” for an under-80, I don’t have to transmute at all when changing gear, which I do frequently while leveling. At least for me, I will be using less charges on under-80’s than I did stones.

People seem to forget that its relatively easy to get the transmutation stones. If you played the game since release and did some map clears you probably have 100s of them. I barely PvE and i have 182 of them, just by doing dailies etc. So even I will get 60 stacks right off the bat.

You guys don’t get it. Say I have a level 30 (Under level 80) toon that I purchase a magitech armor set for. Now i might want to upgrade the stats every 5 levels.

I have 24 transmutation stones. So i can update my gear 4 times (6×4=24). New system gives me 8 charges from the 24. So for my toon under level 80. I can only update his gear (6 pieces) once and have 2 left over.

Ummm..

but will you continue to get stones easily? will this change make you more excited to hunt some items you previously had no reason to hunt due to only having one look available at a time without a lot of additional hassle or cost?

My biggest problem with the change, is not that its worse than what existed before, its that it only solves a small facet of the cosmetic problem, when it could solve much more, and give me and others reasons to play the game for new looks, as well as have greater use for those stones, instead of hoarding them and rarely/never changing my looks.

I did actually mention that…and where does this 100$ come from? Right now you can get 5 transmutation stones for about 18G…if you want to buy an outfit from the store it costs about 45 gold. It costs 180G for cultural (a “expensive” suit).

If prices remain the same…it definitely isn’t $100 to change a 10$ shirt…a shirt costs 400 gems or twice as much kitten stones…..so if you work it out that a $10 shirt = 10 stones, that makes a change = 1$… 800 gems for a full suit ($200 for a full suit in the real world) which is 4x 5 stones…but you need all 5 stones to change it out…so now your real world cost is about $25 to change the full suit over from a previous.

In all instances…except maybe if you are buying the super cheap stuff in the game, it will be cheaper to use tranmutation charges….

I for one am glad that my stack of worthless level 1-79 stones that I have received in game are going to be converted to crystal equivalents even at a 3:1 ratio. That’s still 80ish free transmutes on my level 80 characters. As for characters under level 80, why can’t your cosmetic look be gated by level like everything else? Save your transmutes for your higher level armor like we always have.

For you people complaining…can’t you see the benefit of this? Seriously? It is exactly the same system they have right now with one giant exception:

Skins are unlocked for all of your characters. How many characters do you have are currently wearing the Tequatl wings? Or how about shattered ones? The Jetpack backpack skin? How about the dark gloves from halloween? The starting shoulders for the guardian? How about the Trooper gear that only drops through the personal story? What about the dragon helms from dragonbash? How about that rare Hammer you found on your one character worth 45gold? Did you make the crossing on all of your characters? How many Characters do you have wearing the dark gear? How many bought entire sets of dungeon gear? etc etc etc…..ALL of these items were soulbound. Which meant if you wanted them on multiple characters, you had to re-buy them with the old system…and then use a transmutation stone if you liked your current stats.

The new system makes it so that every character you have can be wearing the shattered wings on their cultural armor transmuted with Abyss dye….for the same cost as it used to be to just have one of them do it.

I have a distinct look on every character I have. I don’t want to just repeat the same armor and colors on every character, that’s boring to me, I want each character to feel like a unique individual.

So this will do absolutely nothing for me, personally. Though I’m sure plenty of people will appreciate it. I remember dozens of threads complaining about getting only 1 of <insert single-use LS skin here>.

I see this as an improvement from the current system so I welcome the change. If I really need to look different and I run out of charges I just throw a few bucks at Anet. Give them a cash flow so they can keep improving the game.

I think it is safe to say most people who play are easily over 60 hours. So at most $1 per entertainment, not the end of the world if a few extra dollars fall their way. (would of spent that cash if they never touched stones and left them as is.)

Okay, for those of you who keep arguing off the point about “why did I buy the lower level transmute charges.” Quite simply, my time is worth far more than the $1.00 per 15 minutes you get paid in transmute stones to complete a map. If your time is worth only $4.00 an hour, good on you. I find it much more efficient to just buy a few stones to have my characters look the way I want them to look during their levelling up stage. I typically only change armor at level 20, 40, 60, and 80. At which point their look is, pardon the pun, set in stone. As for changing looks once they’re at 80, I don’t, I change characters. Currently working on number 32. It’s just the way I roll.

even buying a gear in the store, it cost me 500 gems to get profane armor, and 625 gems to transmute it if i decide to switch gear once.

yes its literally a better idea for me to buy profane armor again than to use the buy the transmutation stones.

yes, in many cases its not worth it to change clothes if you ever intend on wearing that style again. Yes its a very bad system for encouraging people to buy/obtain more different types of clothes, and will probably make less money overall than unlocking would.

As long as you can earn charges in-game via map completion, I’m ok with the idea…

Yes, same here. I’m one that is always out of stones (the sub-level 80 ones) because I always transmute my armour when leveling up. So, one character takes 6 stones every 5 levels, from lvl20 to 75 (more if I like a weapon skin too). In the update it’ll be “18” stones (as there’ll be a 1:3 exchange rate) for each 5 levels… So, unless the map completion stones will be removed, it’ll be a very expensive hobby!

I have been keeping up with the Feature Pack updates with earnest. Most of the changes, I like. I am looking forward to see how some of these changes affect my experience, especially the changes to sigils, runes, and critical damage. But I feel like some of them should have been brought forward to the community first, and that we should have been given the chance to voice our opinions, especially on sweeping alterations like dyes and wardrobes.

I don’t personally like the idea that my stockpiled trasmutation stones are now only worth one of these new “transmutation charges” for every three stones. It certainly doesn’t take me three of these stones (most of which I paid real, actual money for) to transmute a lower level item now. I feel, personally, like I am being robbed here. If anything, transmutation stones should be the ones on a 1:1 ratio, while crystals should be worth more (for example, 1:3, or better yet the equivalent amount that it takes to transmute a level 80 item with this new system), as they previously were required only for level 80 gear.

Also, in the update regarding the wardrobe, I don’t feel like everything was explained correctly. If I have bought the same skin for multiple characters (which I know I have, an example being two pairs of tier 3 sylvari cultural gloves at 12g a pop, or some gem store skins, like the two sets of Phalanx that I paid full price for), will I be refunded for that, since I can now use that skin on any character? How will this affect cultural armor? And town clothes? What the devil do you mean by “some basic clothing items that are no longer available for purchase will be converted into endless tonics”? Which “basic items”? Are we still going to have specific town clothes outfits for each of our characters, or will town clothes be removed completely and replaced with these “endless tonics”? Why not simply have a “town clothes” section in the wardrobe? That, to me, makes more sense.

I also don’t agree with unidentified dyes being removed as loot drops. The drop rate for dyes is already rather low. Removing them as drops entirely will drive up already ridiculous prices. Currently a player will pay 15g or more for black dye, while some, like the Flame and Frost exclusives, sit at over 100g (I’m looking at you, deep glacial sky) and make dyes even less accessible to new players. Especially since it takes so long to actually make money in this game without buying gems and converting them to gold (the rate for which is also abysmal). I also think that if we have the same dye unlocked on multiple characters, we should receive that dye, especially if it’s one that’s rare quality and probably the least likely to pop out of one of the unidentified ones you plan to give us. And while we’re on that subject, how about some economy changes, like increasing the payout for events to more than a handful of coppers?

Another thing I don’t like is the trait points being reworked and starting at a later level, but I feel that’s been addressed in other threads, and I will leave it out of this one.

Transmutation crystals = transmutation charage, as much as we know, you can transmute the said skin on any gear with that charge, which is exactly the same concept as transmutation crystals, not more expensive.

Also, let’s be realistic, none really cared about the stones, most players have +100 of thems cause none will really waste stones on transmuting lower gear when you can reach 80 in a week.

Not everyone power levels their alts to lv80 upon making them. The stone conversion rate is an issue for anyone who does not.

Just because I have a lot of stones doesn’t mean I want to lose a full 1/3 of them. That’s ridiculous. If I have 180 stones, I expect to be able to use them to get 30 different outfit updates for my alts. Now, with the conversion rates I’m only getting 10 full outfit changes. This is crazy. People with leveling alts like to be able to change and upgrade their looks. Now we will get less. This was pointless and unnecessary. It’s just an avenue for people to run out sooner and buy more from the store than they would have before.

Remember, map completion is finite, unless you constantly create and delete characters.

I don’t know how many crystals you’ve gotten from map completion, but I can count them on one hand (3 in fact…) Stones are a lot more numerous. But those you’ll most likely use while completing the maps (if you actually use them) and you’ll keep on getting them when you can’t use them anymore (because you get them on higher level maps as well, even though you’re lvl80).

Yes, my point exactly. Some people, like myself, can have upwards of 20 alts at various levels, most of whom have a set outfit long before they even get close to level 80.

Yeah, I for one am excited for this conversion because it means I’ll have a use for my 100 or so stones that were otherwise gonna rot in my bank forever.

I just got home to a real computer so I could watch the video. It looked like every single item reskin used charges. Right now I have bags bursting at the seams with all the looks, especially on my clothes horse necromancer. Clearing that will be glorious. But …. now if I want to change clothes on the fly, do I have to use up charges every time? Or is that only for when first unlocking the look? This infinite wardrobe will actually be more restrictive if I have to burn 6 charges just to put on evening wear and then 6 more to look right for combat, as that will make me highly reluctant to spend the resources for a few minutes of RP.

As a corollary, should I be binding all the skins I have in my bank now, to save on charges, or won’t that matter?

My understanding is charges are not needed to get skins into the wardrobe. They’re needed to get them out of the wardrobe.

On another note the pvp locker the cost was FREE to check out a skin once you unlocked it (checked it in). Unless we have a new way to obtain these “charges” through Laurels or PvP I don’t see any of my characters using this.

I only have 4 transmutation stones in the 1000+ hours of playing this game so its not like they drop much (0.26% from pve daily). http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Daily#Rewards

If they give us these charges through rewards in game then I have zero issues. As it stands now its something I would use maybe once a year… sad.

I have a question about the new Wardrobe system.
How do you acquire Transmutation Charges? (It was not specified in the blog post or video)

One assumes you can buy them, but can you also earn them?
(Namely via map completion like you can now for the basic stones)

Maybe you can use badge of honors. 1 charge is 10 badges.

Crystals are turned into charges 1 on 1, stones are turned into charges 3 to 1, which means:

Crystals in the gem store turn into charges.
Map completion currently gives the odd chance of getting 3 stones, which means post patch it’ll be the possibility for 1 charge upon completion.
The only exception i wonder how they’ll do it is the stone that sometimes appears upon daily completion, you can’t possibly give .33 charge. Probably the drop rate of that will be lowered to 33% and it’ll be a whole charge.

With out spending gems the only way is daily reward which you have a 0.26% chance… Sorry that doesn’t cut it. Only other way looks like map completion and you get 3 of the stones which will convert to 1 charge. Still should be other ways.

What about people that only pvp or wvw. This doesn’t help them out at all.

No one knows for sure. They may add new sources or even remove existing methods, who knows?
I think that city map completion will reward 1 trans charge, since currently it gives 3 trans stone.
Also with direct gold from the wardrobe UI sounds like a plausible possibility.
BLC sounds like a likely way to get them.
