Good old Lineage 2. I loved to fish at a little pond near Giran’s gate
It is very good social activity and I would love to see this in my new home GW2.

I love to chill and break up the grinds and quests and just fish. Please add! I love this in WoW. I love this in Torchlight 1 and 2. I love this in Minecraft. Please bring it on round!

Fishing would be great. Even if all it is is some kind of extension of the trophy system.

I could really see this becoming a mini game and gem store item. There could be wonky poles on the gem store for aesthetics and a whole crafting system based around improving your pole.

The trophies would be things like Southsun Flounder, Blightwater Ridgeback, which really take talent to get.

Just like a musical instrument there would different skill buttons: Jiggle, Reel, Slacken, Tug, Yank, and so on.

Also, maybe something like Mario 64’s water meter that pops up on the side of your screen. If the bobble is full you’ve caught the fish, but if the bobble goes empty the fish gets away. There’d be some measure of luck involved, RNG. A line could snap, Ridgebacks – usually very susceptible to Jiggles are suddenly just not today forcing you to bull through with other tactics. And that would be a thing: Tactics. Each fish type would have its own tactic that you’d have to learn by trial and error. On top of this some fish, like the Ridgeback might have bony parts so they tend to slash your lines. That means having to have a better line for, meaning upgrading your fishing pole, the lines, the reels, and etc.

Of course, you could also add a little “crystallized dynamite” at the expense of using the “jiggle, tugs, and etc skill”… at least within a certain range of casting!

And that could be a thing too: line length.

It also brings in the option to add boats and get away from purely land based content.

In my mind in order for them to add fishing they would have to create areas where fishing can be done where players can not enter the water at all. It would just make no sense at all and would break the immersion of it.

Then they would need to have a purpose for fishing. Sure yes the fish could be used for new recipes or better yet they could go back and change some of the current recipes to also include fish. But apart from that I think it would still be too shallow (pun not intended). Sure add treasure chests or something to the chance of the fished up goods that could be a good addition.

One last thing tho, would fishing be the same as current gathering methods? Meaning would it be as we go along and just happening to see a node to gather from? I don’t really think it could work this way due to the point I made at the top of the my post. So in my mind there would need to be dedicated places for fishing which could then lead this into my next point. Could fishing be part of a new minigame instead? I think this could be the best way to take it. I would love to see ideas for such a thing.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

Another thing fishing could lead to is creating a bunch of new minis related to it. People go absolutely nuts for stuff like that when it’s linked to fishing.

Now I am depressed. No one posted a link to my fishing idea from years ago.

I have actually changed my mind about fishing. I think I would rather equip/hire NPC fisherman as part of an NPC economy. Tyrian families are being displaced, I have room in my home instance, some of the refugees must be fisherman….

Considering I can just dive in and kill what I want, I’m not too including to sit on my butt while I watch my character sit on his butt.

I might consider supporting it if Fishing ended up in PvP and WvW.
Instead of running the Orb in one map, players pull up Golden Fish and make them as offerings to the Tengu. When appeased, the Tengu will fire arrow volleys at the enemy team.
Or pull up Mistborn Fish in WvW and offer them up to the nearby tribes. Coffers full, they storm off and attack the nearest enemy territory.

Many alts; handle it!

*Trophies to hang in the guild hall
*Rare chance to pull a big one that can pull you under and into a small scale SAB type mini game once you have reached a certain expertise level.
  • Just a good relaxing chill factor to the game on its own.

There are so many places in Tyria with open water expanses.. it wouldn’t require any specially designated zones or instances just to fish for fun.

  • Tournaments.. with a range of rewards like that have already been mentioned but with a more guild or server twist to them.

Cmon ANET.. this could open up a whole bunch of new ideas within the game.. fishing today, smack-a-mole tomorrow…..

Im not desperate for fishing but here are a few reasons why its worth adding:

- Its fun
- It adds re-playable content
-It builds on existing crafting systems adding more depth
-It appears to have high demand and be a popular suggestion
-It would reinvigorate many abandoned water areas of maps
-It could be introduced through the collections system which would take less resources to implement

Lots of things are fun so lets exclude personal biases here
- Replayable content how so ? it’s just another craft we have 8 soon to be 9, none of which offer anything “new” so as to be replayable the 2nd time around.
- How does it build on ? Are you suggesting they rebuild all existing crafts to include it ? If so why stop at fishing may as well give us farming, and hunting too surely those are popular right ?
- Here we go again popular, the bandwagon appeal. I’ll just leave it at this, the bandwagon often gets it wrong.
- It would reinvigorate water areas. So would fixing underwater combat, as well as just generally adding anything to those areas, so what unique thing does fishing do ?
- It could be a collection, sure but what does that do for the players except limit your own suggested replay value?

i certainly won’t be hostile to anyone suggesting fishing. it would probably be fun and yet another way to play the game. everyone has their own opinion of what would be enjoyable in a game.

with that said and from my perspective…

1.) would fishing be a nice addition? yes.
2.) is there a seemingly endless list of more important things that need to get done? probably.

1.Fair enough

2 Replayable content how so ? Similar to current resource collecting, fishing could provide a steady income through selling collected resourced through the TP, meaning its worthwhile to repeat it.

3.How does it build on ? Are you suggesting they rebuild all existing crafts to include it ? No just cooking or a separate crafting discipline of its own. I have no objection to farming or hunting too, all have their merits.

4. And in this case they may not. If many people want a feature, its for a reason, because they enjoy it or think it would be beneficial to the game. Its logical to satisfy customer demand if the investment will pay off.

5.It would reinvigorate water areas. So would fixing underwater combat, as well as just generally adding anything to those areas, so what unique thing does fishing do ? Fixing underwater combat is more challenging as it involves basically redoing 9 entire class skills and then balancing all the skills. Yes they could add anything so why not fishing.

6.It could be a collection, sure but what does that do for the players except limit your own suggested replay value? Gives them an actual goal to make the content feel rewarding. It could be both a crafting discipline and a collection, no need to limit one or the other.

Like I said i am not really fussed about fishing but see no drawback to adding it other than the time and money needed to develop it. If you think there are bigger priorities and dont want to see fishing until they have been added/fixed thats fine and thats your opinion, to some extent i agree. Its up to Anet to decide in this case. But to be so against the content being added simply because it doesnt appeal to you is illogical to me.

I’m not against it, i just fail to see the “need” for it.

I also failed to see the OP have any meaningful comments on why it was needed other than because i like it.

For every one person that likes it is someone that doesn’t. Hence discussions of the pro’s/con’s and implementation.

Personally i could care less, added or not its more content….Something i’m always okay with.

Yeah I don’t think the game NEEDS any particular content. The only discussion is whether one type of content would improve the game more significantly than the other. I think fishing would be a decent addition and would improve the game enough to make it worthwhile.

Used search function just to say I agree with this idea. GW2 needs more downtime content, fishing, card trading/board games, maybe some “clicker type” and other mini games, a game within a game.. One should never have to leave GW2 to find different types of gaming genres to enjoy, even though we can. I would even support some items being sold through the BL store. It’s long shot but just throwing that out there.
