1. I’ve always liked that you needed to learn things in gw1 in order you to be able to complete something,, I kinda miss that in gw2. GW2 is more like a role-playing game. You actually dont need a brain to play gw2.
2. Skill variety. Customizing your way of playing towards the environment of the map.
3. Single target enchantments.
4. Hexes
5. Non stacking conditions, = also better for gw2 servers
6. Instanced areas, i like the open world, but there should also be alot of instanced areas. Like fow etc
7. End-dungeon chests with rare item drop chance
8. Special drops from bosses.
9. Random chests around the map.
10. Healers,, at launch i thought every class could become a healer in gw2. Turns out, they meant that everyone had a heal. That turned out pretty boring.
11. Teamwork, in gw1 you could do the most crazy combinations of builds and deal so much dmg. gw2, more people = more spamming = more dps. In gw2 you dont actually work together. it’s just, if have more people, you deal more dmg.
12. Non squared maps
13. Saving builds and posting them in chat
14. A large world,, once you are 80. you only have a few places on the map where u can go.
15. Max level 20.

Also forgot to get into how much more horizontal GW1 was. Much lower level / gear cap. That was something else I had a very great appreciation for. I was disappointed when GW2 came out with 80 levels and felt especially betrayed later when they introduced Ascended gear.

The philosophy behind the GW franchise, and a huge part of why I loved it, was that it was NOT about grinding for power. You could grind for titles, special-looking gear, options (skills) …but just to make arbitrary numbers go up so you can be more powerful? No. That sort of thing was for WoW and games like it. GW was not that sort of game (very much anyway).

20 wasn’t so bad, and you were never really underleveled for content so levels weren’t something you worried much about. You’re just getting through the world and periodically “oh look, seems I’ve leveled”, and then you reach power cap LONG before anything approaching endgame. The levels were there, but they weren’t very many and they weren’t such a burden.

Starting a new toon in GW2, you have to be very aware of your level vs that of your environment and it’s so easy to end up in areas you “shouldn’t be”. That really just wasn’t an issue in GW1. Its linear nature had a lot to do with that of course, but even in GW2 the “flow” of the game would be so much better with 20 levels (or fewer). If your zone only had a range of 2 levels, and the next zone over was another 2 levels higher, it would be so much better to be able to just play the game without accidentally exploring where you “shouldn’t be”.

Also in GW1 that wasn’t much of anything I can think of for leveling-gating of features. AND you could even use max-power weapons from low level (it just downscaled in power I believe). So you didn’t have to just “hold onto it” until you were max-level, you could equip it anytime.

Class-specific armor was kind of nice too. Not sure I’d say it’s needed, but it did make things more visually distinctive as far as what your primary class was. With that said, I give you this.. my regal Lord of the Bad Mojo.

Had a nice time reading all your replies. How I miss GW1 lol

Haven’t played GW2 for about 9 months now (I believe). So decided to re-install it and see what changed. Sadly, there’s nothing really new? I still have 100% world exploration apart from a couple new Waypoints and points of interest :-/

Anyhow, what I miss most from GW1 is basically everything… The huge amount of skills for starters, it made your character truly unique. Not just another profession spamming the same skills over and over again.

The simplistic leveling and traiting system (a +1 here and +1 there…), why did GW2 go the route of putting all stats in the hundreds and even thousands?

- Diverse PvP
- Jade Quarry (and FA)
- The campaigns and story
- Dedicated missions
- Quests (ya, real quests)

I actually miss playing a real support (my main was a monk in GW1). Albeit GW2 tried to do something different, it feels much less teamwork orientated.

Also, after playing GW1 from the start for like 2 years I took many breaks and returned multiple times. It was only like 6 years later that I received my first 100% exploration title and to this day I have still not seen every aspect of GW1. Whilst for GW2, I have 3 characters that have 100% exploration completed and feel like there is little for me to see ^_-

Yes, stuff like this!

It made players adapt to the game…

I loved the fact that a whole economy was created simply based on running people through difficult parts of the map just to get to a certain location.

I miss the more engaging combat scenarios and mob variance…

Any kind of build is usable and creates results accordingly, there weren’t a best “1” build or best “1” damage type for every encounter (Thought there were slight limitations, that makes badly designed builds useless).
While mobs actually force us to use combat mechanics…

Mindless “stand next to foe and spam skills” without using anything else is quite boring, even I began to play other games when the PvE combat gets too boring…

Similar could be done in GW2, if mobs were to be designed abit better, while also easily avoiding “forced player roles” too.

I’m a casual PvE adventurer, I enjoy combat, adventure and helping, but not farming.
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.

For what it’s worth, many professions in GW2 are much, much, much stronger than the professions in GW1. Look at mesmers, warriors and rangers to their GW1 variants.

I have to disagree, GW1 had the ability to mix and match skills and place whatever we wanted on the skill bar, making them pretty powerful. Whereas GW2 is tied to the weapon, you have skills that are hardly used or want on there.

While mixing and matching skills was semi-evident, don’t kid yourself into actually believing that it was that much more evident? Sure, there were hundreds of skills – but, for example, warrior only had 14 sword skills and 4 elite sword skills. Of those 14 as well, 2 were repeats. That basically meant you had 12 unique sword skills and 4 unique elites for sword.

Now, even further, only a handful of these skills were used in the endgame and metagame and only a slightly larger portion of these skills were even viable. Unlike GW2, some builds in GW1 were very bad and actually wouldn’t work at all.

There was still more diversity, but…it’s not quite as much diversity as people are led to believe. I’d say the diversity could easily be made again by just allowing every weapon have two skill set options (not 2 skill options, as it would inevitably lead to a pretty strict metagame). That way people who liked a certain amount of skills weren’t pushed onto a certain weapon.

Assassins were a very acquired skill back then, as I recall. Needing to have a lead-offhand-dual strike combo was far more annoying than even the warrior’s weapon/adrenaline requirements (which were a smaller pain, but still an issue). I’d rather have the thief.

so you rather depend on a point count that locks every single weapon skill then a system that keeps every skill independent……..sure…
sure, the lead→off-hand→dual skill system simply doesn’t work in GW2 but i really can’t stand the thief, i rather have the assassin so i can decide which skill i use without constantly being stopped by a point counter.

I remember leaving pre-searing and thinking the game was done, only to find out that I only completed 1% of the game.

I know, right. That ‘whoa’ moment sure was something…

Anyhow, I do like the OP’s attempt to serve as a [merged] thread for all GW-related sentiments (makes it easier to try and argue other people’s opinions, and all), but what I like even more is the disservice it did to the poster….much like the poll thread did.
‘Look at me guyz, see, I’m really not completely infatuated by gw2, as I luvz da ‘zhaitan managerie’ ’ haha oboy. Good thing the OPcan invoke the argument of age taking its toll on the memory (much like they dismissed a teenager’s opinion for being – a teenager, as someone typically of a short attention span and generally immature).

The new zones don’t count toward world completion. Just saying. They could add 100 new zones and your world completion wouldn’t change.

Things I am nostalgic for:

1. Larger area “feel”. As Vayne said it wasn’t actually larger, but felt that way due to path direction.
2. Larger world. In contrast to #1, by this time we had much more explorable content and areas. I wish I had more places to go.
3. Creatures that are not in game that still could be like Gargoyles, Life Pods, Thorn Stalkers, Necrid Horsemen, Vaettir, various mandragor, various dinosaurs, hydra etc., etc., etc.
4. I miss many places that have been wiped from existence or conveniently placed just out of zones. I know that Orr caused a big flood, blah, blah, blah, but if it covered the whole of Tyrian existence there would be no people left alive. I find it convenient that many loved places are either now underwater (Temple of Ages, Droknar’s Forge) or just non-existent.
5. The more epic feel of personal instances. I know this is a MMO and things have to be handled on a different scale, but during the personal story instances, I think they could have been more challenging and memorable like the GW1 missions.

The game felt so huge.

By the time I bought it, the EOTN had been released. I played all the way from the northernmost edge in Jaga Morraine down to the southernmost areas in Cantha, all across the parched plains of Elona and up to again the endlessly burning forests of the Charr area.

I miss the scale and scope of the dungeons. Not cramped rooms filled with seemingly endless trash mobs but whole maps in their own right where you carefully maneuvered among the mobs, taking them out one by one. (And the Dreadspawn Maw in the Domain of Anguish, aka DoA or Dead on Arrival, scared the spit out of me by coming out of the ground right beside me the first time I was there). The Guild Wars 2 dungeons don’t evoke the same feelings of battling dangerous foes.

By comparison, Guild Wars 2 feels so much smaller.

Keep in mind, I was able to finish all four Guild Wars 1 titles in a single week once.

I was talking about moving across the landscape and how big it felt. How big the dungeons were and how hard to fight the individual mobs were. Not whether one person could finish the game fast if they wanted to.

Guild Wars 1 (not dungeons the world) gave the illusion of size by limiting where you could and couldn’t go. It felt big because you could never go in a straight line to anywhere. You snaked back and forth on a path or one of a couple of paths through a large zone that was mostly inaccessible.

Take a look at the area north of Piken Square. It’s not really that big. But it’s very very hard to navigate. The illusion of size.

Oh I know all that. I didn’t say they were bigger, I said they gw1 felt bigger. And it still does, Guild Wars 1 gives the illusion of more space by being spread out across a bigger potion of the known maps. By having Elona and Cantha, the Crystal Desert and the far north. By having the ring of fire and the huge dungeons that were whole maps in their own right.

There may be more map to Guild Wars 2 but it feels much more limited in size without the other continents and the large dungeons.

You did say this is a thread about nostalgia and this is what I feel nostalgic for.

By having the ring of fire and the huge dungeons that were whole maps in their own right.

There may be more map to Guild Wars 2 but it feels much more limited in size without the other continents and the large dungeons.

You did say this is a thread about nostalgia and this is what I feel nostalgic for.

GW1 maps was way bigger ..time how long it takes to cross a map in gws 1 vs gws 2….the maps was/ are huge vs the maps of gws 2

They are the same – LOL there is no difference in the size, except that GW1 you had the map instance for your party only. It is a fake difference. Also you had to fight your way through the maps – that makes it feel different also. Having more people on a map makes it feel smaller also.

The maps are the same size. Don’t believe me – http://zoom.it/TWLx#full

GW1 is bigger, they had to shrink the GW1 map to make the GW2 map fit.
also, your link only adds icons on the GW2 map, it doesn’t prove anything.

Is this an opinion or can you back that up with evidence?

i can but i need to make it from scratch, can’t find the LA from before….

If you have to make it up – then there is no evidence – anyone can fake it. If there was a discussion on GW1 being bigger than GW2, there would have been threads about it all over the place.

If you included all the expansions for GW1, then there’s no comparison…GW1 is much much bigger then GW2.

The gw1 map used to be bigger, they reduced its size in order to fit eye of the north on it also.

Can’t really do it with LA, since the old LA isn’t in the same area as the new LA. It’s a different city, rebuilt after the tidal wave that destroyed it. You’d have to do it with a zone that existed in both games in the same area.

I started playing GW1 the year it came out, and instantly fell in love with it. I was also one of the people who bought a GW2 collectors edition, my I got my lovely little statue right on my desk.
The things I miss about GW1:
- The much wider variety of species in the world. Several of the new species they added really bother me, because they just seem so cliche. Giant mosquitoes and wasps, also wargs. I miss the ;dinosaurs, Hydras, Husks, the behemoths, simians, the older insects that seemed more fitting then just large bugs.
- I miss the scope of the map. I think the maps are both pretty close to the same size, though a lot has been cut off and hidden. but with all of the waypoints, gw2 just feels so much smaller. I wish they would remove most of the way points, and only put them in cities, forts, villages. Places where there are people to take care of them. Being able to jump nearly anywhere on the map in 10 minutes, just makes it feel so much smaller.
- The Lore and quests I miss the most. Every quest you took on in GW1 had a story with it, they might not have been the greatest story, but there was a story. There were usually a few paragraphs you had to read through before clicking accept or deny. The Dynamic events in GW2 just lack depth. They are about issues going on right now, any they repeat so often that they lose meaning, if they ever had any. Most of them just feel the same, protect me, guard me, kill them, escort me.
-I really miss class armor. Don;t get me wrong, I love the dye system and the armors we have in GW2, I just with we had a few options that we could only use by being a certain profession.
-Pets – As a ranger I really miss watching my pets grow. I really miss choosing one single pet and making it feel like a companion. Not choosing it because of its special abilities, because they didn’t have any. But just choosing the pet I thought looked the best standing or flying next to my character. And I miss watching them just grown and eventually becoming a dire/elder/playful big cuddly pet. I really miss my Elder Hyena.

Things I love about GW2:
- The dye system, I adore this system. It is so amazing. The dye system in GW1 was so limited, you got a few colors that you could mix and match. But you couldn’t dye different parts of the armor, and a number of times those parts were pretty small.
- The Living Story , I love it. The first season wasn’t great and scarlet seemed pretty dull for me. But I like the way the second season is progressing and marks a big improvement over the first. Which is understandable, Anet is learning as they go. And I look forward to seeing thew new maps and new stories as they come.
-I actually enjoy the combat system more. In GW1 I was awful at making my own builds, and was always asking for help in choosing a build to use, or hopping over to pvx to find something to use. I am more comfortable making my own builds in GW2, though a few more skill choices would be awesome. Just not as many as GW1 those skills were far too overwhelming.
-The open world is fun. the majority of time there are people around you who will help you out when you need a hand with a tough enemy.
-You actually have to loot a body and the loot you get is secret. when I played in GW1 with a group of friends, I always felt like the game had it out for me. It always seemed like I was getting the short end of a blue staff. While my friends got the more colorful and useful and valuable items.
-All the pretty weapon skins. There are just so many to choose from, and I love that. I like the wardrobe options, so I can scroll through the skins and then go out and try to find my dream weapon/armor.
