Welp, caved in, got the Trilogy and EotN (associating the new keys to my old account was easy, thankfully), now I have to relearn the game, helps that I already have 4 level 20s, though I think I’m effectively broke because I only have one ecto.

If you already knew your old account information, you could have just redownloaded the client instead of buying the game again.

It was cheaper by $5 just to get the Trilogy and EotN than all three expansions separately. I suppose I could have just bought EotN for the HoM stuff only, but I actually do want to see what all I missed over the years.

Look at the bottom. If you already knew your account information you don’t have to buy another key.

How long has it been since you played? Were you around for the GW:B stuff?

I know I didn’t need to buy another key for the base game (heck, I still have the CD, patching would have been quick since I have a 1MB line), but I didn’t have Nightfall, Factions, or EotN; so if I just reinstalled the game from disk (or downloaded from the site) and bought the expansions separately, that would’ve been $30 compared to getting Trilogy and EotN for $25.

And, uh, I think it was more than nine years ago since I played? I didn’t even receive my first birthday present yet before I stopped playing. On the bright side I apparently have an entire guild hall to myself now.

GW1
If you don’t have an elite skill yet in GW1 you can just slot a non-elite skill and have a full array of skills. Admittedly under most circumstances this will be less optimal than having an elite that suits your build, but it is better than having nothing at all.

That you had to first unlock with coin, capture, or in the case of PvP both.

Further after you purchased so many skills from a trainer, the game hard caps you at a platinum per skill.

Getting the full collection of your classes skills, across the multiple campaigns and multiple trainers (not all trainers had the same selection) would often be a fairly time consuming effort that would require you going out half-kittened most of the time and/or a very costly endeavor.

And since you can secondary every class in the game… I sure hope you’re not a completionist. You paid very much for that build variety, in multiple ways.

GW2
If you don’t have a trait yet in GW2 you just do without until you can get one. Your build is not only sub-optimal, it is partially empty.

As it was in GW1. Ergo, the comparison. In GW2 you’re given an option, a real option as opposed to a faux option that existed in GW1.

I imagine they must have introduced tomes as there was a demand for the option to skip the exploring and discovering aspect.

As it is now.

Some people like to explore and earn their skills, and some people just want it ASAP gib now now now.

GW1 through a very convoluted system offered a kind of faux option to skip elite hunting for veteran players.

Whereas GW2 is much more honest and straight forward with this dilemma in that regard. Go earn it in the game or pay for it.

Both player types are sated with no weird convoluted system that was GW1. GW2 get’s it right here. Get’s it right on a lot of things compared to GW1.

Only in the broadest strokes can one accurately paint them as, “the same.” It would be like saying that because they both can involve sitting at a computer, looking at the screen, and entering commands through keyboard and mouse, doing your taxes is exactly the same as playing GW2.

You’re as free to feel that way as I am free to laugh at the blatant hypocrisy of folks who say “Elite hunting in GW1 was great fun” out of one side of their mouths and say “Trait hunting in GW2 sucks” out of the other.

We disagree, however. In that regard your definition of fun and my definition of fun are vastly different.

I have not commented on my definition of fun. I, for example, do not have a problem with the trait unlock system. Well, perhaps it could use some tweaking but no system is perfect.

What I am saying is that achieving 100% completion in a zone is not the same as killing a single boss. There is no hypocrisy in saying that one enjoys killing a boss for a skill but not having to complete an entire zone, participate in PvP, etc to do so. Is it hypocrisy for me to say, for example, that I enjoy killing mobs for rewards but not doing jumping puzzles ?

Elite skills are just that, Elite. Advanced. They are not the same as a basic Trait in GW2. As much as I do not have the antipathy for the trait unlock system that some do I do think that if Anet wanted to capture the essence of Elite hunting in GW1 they might have been better off restricting the trait unlock system to master/grandmaster traits.

1. Use N/any or any/N
2. Get the skill “Necrotic Traversal”
3. Kill something on the other side of the cliff
4. Use skill.
5. You’re there.
Of course that only works if there’s something there.
If you can’t get somewhere, you don’t need to be there.
Otherwise, just stop being lazy and walk around.

Just in case you haven’t figured this out: you can click anywhere and your character will take the shortest path there.

Get this…you can put any skills you want on the skill bar, your weapon doesn’t determine it.

Yeah…you read that right.

As an extremely mmorpg lover and a rpg long time player, i absolutely recommend you buy this pack and play it.

Not to fill the HoM, as it will take you a bit of time and effort, but to enjoy the depth that this game lore has to offer.

I recommend you play the nightfall campaign first and move then to the eye of the north campaign so you can unlock heroes to help you crack the content.

You can read all about them here

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Hero

And get ready for some jaw breaking scenarios from a 2005 game and a awe rendering soundtrack by jeremy soule.

Hands down, the best rpg ever made.

As there’s currently only 12 hours left for this sale, could someone run down the benefits — if any — of buying GW1 strictly to unlock benefits within GW2 (such as the Hall of Monuments)?

And do you need Eye of the North in order to access the hall (and thus, earn achievements) from within GW1?

Rationale – I would buy GW1 (and perhaps EotN) if it gave me access to specific items or achievements within GW2, but I’m not looking for another game to sink thousands of hours into.

Thanks for your insight.

You definitely need Eye of the North. That’s where the Hall of Monuments is located, and that’s what links Guild Wars 1 to Guild Wars 2.

, with time and effort. The more you do, the more rewards you’ll get.

Yes, you do need EOTM to be able to access the HOM. You don’t need to buy it right now, but you will need it at some point.

I really would not recommend getting the game if you just want it for the sake of HoM stuff. You will be playing the game for hours upon hours, and if you legitimately do not enjoy it, you will be wasting your time.

Thanks for the insight, Sarrs.

I’m sure I’d enjoy the game; I’m just cognizant of my rather compulsive nature – I tend to focus on one game at a time, and “splitting my time between GW1 and GW2” really wouldn’t be an option for me. If GW1 got its hooks into me, I’d forgo my GW2 time and focus entirely on GW1, and I enjoy GW2 entirely too much to give it up right now.

I played UO for 12+ years, to the exclusion of all other games for the same reason.

So if GW1 doesn’t offer any benefits simply for linking accounts, and would require actual playtime to unlock items, GW2 achievements, titles, or other cosmetics within GW2, then I would rather not “tempt myself”, as I know my nature.

I’ll keep watching the thread though, I’m not completely ready to get off the fence just yet.

You accumulate points in your Hall of Monuments by completing GW1 achievements. One of those achievements is just linking your GW1 and 2 accounts. This gives 3 points.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hall_of_Monuments

As you can see in that chart:
At one point you get the Heritage Footwear
At two points you also get the Heritage Legwear
At three points you also get the Heritage Torso wear

and so on.

Here is a guide to Hall of Monuments point acquisition.

i’m hoping the account link thing will work, but if it doesn’t awhwel.. i’m not really doing this for the achievements.. i’m not a cross game promotions enthusiast.. i remember awhile back if you beat two different metroid games on two different platforms, you could link them and swap samus’ outfit.. {nerd joy} anyway, back to guildwars.. i considered getting the earlier installments but the cheesy unbalance of gw2 was almost enough to make me refuse to support anything guildwars.. the lore is diverse enough to keep me interested though, it reminds me of things like airbender or earthsea.. some things have shown improvement this year and steam put on a good sale, so after 5k hours on this game i’m sure i could spare a few extra for the prequels

Since everyone i know says GW2 story sucked compared to GW1.

Starting an elementalist. Anyone knows whats a good 2nd profession to pick?
I’ll be primarily playing Solo and considering the below:

1) Monk (For healing abilities i guess?)
2) Ranger (To get a pet to tank while i nuke at a safe distance?)
3) Mesmer (To go all out glass cannon and nuke’em b4 they get close?)

Which of the 3 above would be most useful for soloing?

First off, you will NEVER be doing anything solo once you get out of pre-searing, so get that out of your mind now. You are not responsible for healing yourself, so don’t feel like you need to.

You can take monk if you would like. This would be good if you would like to heal or protect yourself, or if you’re facing a large amount of undead.

It’s generally not a good use of a skill to take a pet as a secondary, but feel free to do what you want. You only get 8 skills, so use them well.

Mesmers in GW1 are not at all like mesmers in GW2. These mesmers use interrupts, denial, and punishment. There is not much raw power. Elementalist are the nukes.

That being said, there are ways that each profession can be useful as a seondary. For example, you could use the Necromancer skill “Weaken Armor” to inflict the “Cracked Armor” condition, then use your elementalist nuke skills. You could use the Mesmer skill “Arcane Echo” to cast a high-powered Ele skill, then cast for the second time while it is reloading.

Your secondary profession is all about complementing your primary profession. If you would like, you can browse the wiki to see a list of skills and get an idea what would work for you.

Mind blown? Am I the only one who likes GW2 a lot more than GW1?

GW1 frustrated the hell out of me with its missions where you have to restart everything over on the first wipe. Then you get tons missions especially in Factions where you have to keep Leeroy Jenkins alive. Just frustrating. I didn’t even finish War in Kryta. The only reason I kept playing was because I’m an armor set addict and I wanted the Heritage armor set for my GW2 character.

This isn’t to say that there’s nothing in GW1 I wouldn’t like to see the devs bring over to GW2. Far from it. Elite skill hunts were very cool, subclassing was very interesting, the number of viable builds was impressive, heroes would be super cool in GW2 instanced content, the variety of skins was such that whatever look you had in mind, GW1 had something for you. I could keep going, GW1 had a lot of very good ideas that should be brought over to GW2, but so far I had more fun with the second game by a long shot.

Yes, you’re the only one.

Also for anyone buying this, the correct order is Prophecies (Tyria) -> Factions (Cantha) -> Nightfall (Elona) -> EotN (Tyria GW2-tie-in)-> the GW:B stuff (WiK (Tyria) -> HotN (Tyria) -> WoC (Cantha)). If you ever finish all that, expect to feel like the story just dropped off, and then you’ll see why the Lore subforum is always so angry.

I regret doing prophesies first. As Yumiko’s ancestor Yumiko is not Canthan looking and it costs 10 dollars real cash to change her appearance to that of factions characters.

I’m glad gw 2 freed up character creation and not gated it behind one of its campaigns and which one you started in. Unless they fixed it now…

It’s good to know the game is still being sold. I’m currently filling my Hall of Monuments and the closer I get to those 50 points, the more I fear the game is going to be shut down the next day.

I didnt realize you are REQUIRED to party with other players to do anything in GW1. I’m not happy about that.

You aren’t.

NPC henchmen or heroes can be used to create a party without any other players involved.

At start all a new GW1 player will have are the use of henchmen until they acquire their heroes and in most cases is good enough.

I’ve started off in Factions, because: Assassin. Made it to 11 and about to head to EoTN. I’m having fun so far, and I’m glad others were able to take advantage of the sale. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to finish the campaigns.

I’m definitely enjoying getting more lore and back story to make me appreciate what there is in GW2.

Also: GW Trilogy made it to 99/100 on the Top Sellers list on Steam this weekend. Interesting.

As a 50/50 Gwamm…no, I love GW2 more as well.

People just tend to look back at gw1 with rose tinted goggles.

“Skill captures were fun!”…said no one in GW1. Cost 1k per skill cap and you had to pretty much vanquish a section of the map to get to a particular boss. Oh, and sometimes, said boss may not even show up. They fixed this with elite tomes so you could simply unlock the skill by essentially paying for it…because no one liked it.

“You had more exploration!”…that consisted of wall scraping with a 3rd party program installed.

“You have more build diversity!!”…that hardly anyone used. I know for a fact that the VAST majority of people used builds straight from the pvx wiki. It either sabway, mesmerway, or ritway or gtfo for hardmode. And in the end, out of the 1300+ skills (of which many are duplicates) in GW1, less than 10 percent were ever considered useful. Please show me the monk with orision of healing on his bar…The most mind blowing thing about the skill system is that a ranger could not have a pet. And please tell me how balancing worked out…there were times when skills remained broken for months…or years! Shadowform, Sliver Armor, freakin Ursan blessing…

I loved GW1, but geez, the “GW1 was 1000x better!” crowd could use a reality check.

I’ll afk in 9 rings (yes, there is an event where you afk), but that’s about it.

Or they liked GW1 more. Some people will enjoy GW2 more, some will enjoy GW1 more. Doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy the other as well.

Bosses were a chance to spawn in Prophecies, but were set spawns in the other two campaigns. You may not have enjoyed hunting Elite skills, and there is no shame in not liking a specific aspect of a game, but others did.

“You have more build diversity!!”…that hardly anyone used. I know for a fact that the VAST majority of people used builds straight from the pvx wiki.

No, actually you do not. You have an opinion to that effect.

The most mind blowing thing about the skill system is that a ranger could not have a pet.

Mine did. My guild-mates did. My alliance members did. PUGs with whom I played did. People against whom I played in PvP did.

I’ll afk in 9 rings (yes, there is an event where you afk), but that’s about it.

Not sure that a single casino style game qualifies as an “event” but the same is possible in roulette. “Let it ride.”

More and more people are coming back to GW1 so you won’t lose anything by investing into buying at least the Triology. Though EotN gives access to dungeons and a lot of other nice stuff.

This really bothers me. It’s like starting out GW2 with the “Join an Order” arc, then stopping half way through that arc and skipping right to Living World Season 1.

Hands down, the best rpg ever made.

edit: play it when gw2 server is down for maintenance

No, don’t play Nightfall first! They won’t understand anything! They’ll say “who is this Shiro and Lich” in the Realm of Torment.

Nar, you shouldn’t let how people play the campaigns bother you so much. There have been numerous videos, walkthroughs, guides, and wikis out there for years now that spoil any story or surprises the game might present to the player.

I’ve personally watched WoodenPotatoes’ Let’s Play series in anticipation of GW2’S release, so I’m not missing out.

I did get guild wars in 2005 however due to my terrible internet connection (Australian dial up) I became quickly frustrated with playing it (not the games fault just my internet ) and gave up pretty much just after searing.

I have been playing GW2 for about 8 months and enjoy it – though i am mainly a pve explorer type interested in lore/story – so decided to grab the trilogy just to get into the back story of the whole world. Some thing are frustrating (invisible walls!) however starting with Prophesies and going from there, so yeah.. some people out their playing for the (sort of) first time!

There is no harm in moving between campaigns before completing them. It might be the most lore-following way, but it’ll certainly make it easier.

Starting with Prophecies is slower, but you have an easier learning curve, and you’re given a number of skills through your quests, which saves a lot of coin. Head to Eye of the North when you reach Lion’s Arch to pick up three heroes. Do a little bit of Nightfall to pick up more heroes. You should have a full party of high level, more powerful, customizable npc’s at this point which will make it far easier. Then, I would go into Factions and finish leveling to 20, and start picking up some elites. The only downside to doing Prophecies is that you won’t be able to swap your secondary early (since you need to ascend), but by doing a few quests, you can swap between the core quests freely. Then pay the 500g per class to swap to the Nightfall and Factions specific classes.

You can complete the stories in any order, but lorewise it’s probably best to do Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, EotN, then Beyond. For rewards, EotN and/or Factions first.

I found an old box of the game back and I cant find the team arena map that should be there according to the box. Did they move it to another place or so?

Thanks in advance
