I agree, pull the feature and rework it or at least put the guesting part in but keep the free transfers so people can still meet up in the mean time while it’s being sorted.

Many, many times we were told X is impossible in GW1. Hairdressers, Apperance changes, account restorations, retrospective legendary survivor titles etc.

All of these were solved with some innovation and inventiveness from Areanet.

Please step up to the plate and try again and implement guesting.. when it’s ready

Why would the pull the feature? I’d rather they put it in as is and then work on making it cross region.

Personally, I don’t understand why we can’t just have districts for everything outside of WvW.

Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”

I’d rather they put it in too, but keep the server transfers free and as they are now until it’s region free. The pull it option was there in case it couldnt be done

I agree about the district system, but that decision was taking years ago and reworking it would be expensive.

You know…I sort of agree with the rest of the people saying “How is this usefull”. To me, The most elegant, and simplest solution has been starting anet in the face, since day one.

Look, Free transfers are freaking great. It’s just anet tottaly implemented them backwards. Since Free Transfers ONLY effect wvw populations, and harm that specific game time, there would have been a simple way to compramise between all game-types and even between EU.

First off, Transfers are free, and limited by hour. Bad news, if your a transfer junkie, you can only participate in your original match-up you are in. Say your in Devona’s rest at the start of the match this week, but transfer to gate of madness. Well guess what, unless you transfer back to Devona’s rest-no you can not participate in WVW. Its completly blocked for you, for the rest of the match-up. If you want to be on Devona’s for a while and play with them, Transfer before the next match-up. Simple.

That solves fair-weather WvW transfers largely, and discourages people from doing it to a point. If people want to really transfer, let’s face it-they will. Adding a gem-fee does not really discourage anything other then mass-mid-game transfers. Witch frankly, being locked out of wvw for the week would solve the same problem. You can’t stop people from switching severs ever, becuase thats not fair.

Also, this allows players to transfer to Eu, and Us essentialy. This is not a perfect solution by anymeans, but it certainly could easily hold over a greater-populace then this guesting feature and gem-transfer they have in the works.

Even as a WvW player, This smells like a cash-cow. It tottaly just screams “We want your money, and we will kick you whilst your down”. Ohh have some friends in Eu….PAY MONEY TO PLAY WITH THEM OR ELSE…ohhhh want to switch severs to be with some of your friends “PAY MONEY!!!!”….No really, anet just created a system designed to make people pay exorbent amounts of money to play their game…This is a bad update. Sorry it is. I don’t thank them. Id prefer it never happens.

Now I must chose a side, and never be able to play with my transatlantic friends ever again unless I shell out money.

Well this seems to be the crux of the problem. $$££$$. That is all I can see that benefits from this. Cah-ching a money making alteration. Of course you have a “choice” not to pay to swap servers to play with your mates but then your missing out on your friends companionship and wellll “Cah-ching” had to be done to team up with your mates.

This is a no brainer. The Only benefit is to Anet pockets. Spin money spin.

“There can be only one!” Except for Anet splitting the community in two.

The big thing for me was the total lack of communication. I asked about the progress months back and was told to patiently wait. I did that. I asked about the progress a few weeks back and was told to patiently wait. I did that.

Now we get it and it’s what I feared, why couldn’t we get a progress report about restrictions etc.? Working on communicating with the players? Sorry but you haven’t managed it yet.

Looks like there wasn’t much point in setting up Operation: Union thread. Sure we can still help but it will never be effective and has really been crippling to us as a whole.

These sorts of things continue to divide the community and by the response these sort of features are pretty important for the many social players.

Good job on finally getting it implemented however a NA/EU bridge will be greatly welcomed.

It seems to me the many players annoyed by the particular result is because of the way the feature was worded and effectively feel lied to. ‘Anywhere, any world’ is definitely not the case.

Heck I would pay for the extra costs if my data was present on both centres just to be able to game with NA buddies.

Alas, still making Lemonade but it still tastes pretty bitter to me.

“We know how important community play is” – Colin, blog post
“We have 4 teams worth of people ready for this mission, so everyone meet in international and we’ll race!” Our alliance, back in the GW1 days.
“We know you’re disappointed…” – Martin, this thread
“Why in the LOLCATPICTURE can we not get opening quotation marks that face the right way?” –Me, right now

No…I was -disappointed- that after playing in an alliance of guilds for 6 years – a large and fully international alliance who almost wholly followed the game through to the sequel – we didn’t even warrant a simple alliance chat channel like we had in the original. That is pretty disappointing.
The words I use to describe how I feel about the rift and split they caused inside my guild with regional walls would need a lot of Free To Good Home signs if I tried to use them in this fluffy place. The fact that they “know I’m disappointed” isn’t really making me feel any better about it. The fact that they would release a statement one day that says “We know how important community play is” but don’t have even the most basic support for our communities and then do this the next day is pretty insulting to some of us.
If we couldn’t play together anymore, we should have been told that. But that’s in the past and isn’t helping now.
What will help now? What can we expect going forward?
They can claim that international play isn’t possible or feasible, (and I can hold my opinion that it sounds like a kitten dropped by a male cow to me and I can flat out say “I do not believe you.”) I do believe international play is possible – I do it in other games. Some of us played on some German BF3 servers with no more inconvenience than a bit longer load screen and definitely didn’t have enough lag problems to keep us from getting plenty of headshots, but whatever, I’m not here to discuss the difference between GW1 International districts and German BF3 servers and GW2 renown hearts. They’ve shown us that international play is feasible in instanced play – that is something at least. So – let us only do Dungeons and Fractals and Personal Story instances. There are instances in the game, instanced play is possible internationally, the conclusion to this sentence isn’t a real large leap in logical progression…

But what I’m seeing here is people say that it’s a false-entitlement QQ. Really? Should we not expect the company that gave us these great tools to create our guild and our community of guilds and the game we played for years and built friendships through, to give ANY sort of continuing support to that group? Any at all? Because it doesn’t really feel that unreasonable to me. Ok, so they’ve come upon some limits…but you cannot expect anyone to believe an alliance chat channel is beyond feasible, or that any international play is impossible.

Well said. It’s amazing people are actually defending literal false advertising.

What I find amazing is that some people actively argue against those of us who have a problem with this implementation, when there’s absolutely no gain to be had for them. They’re arguing for the sake of arguing in an issue that obviously has a great negative impact for at least some of us, which is behavior I find appalling.

As for literal false advertising, I’m not sure I’d go that far. However, what I will say is that ArenaNet did this:

1) At the very least, very strongly implied that EU and US accounts would be able to guest with each other.

2) Did absolutely nothing to discourage that way of thinking for the months that we’ve been live and in beta. If this was the plan all along, which I strongly doubt, they could’ve said something before the game was released.

I’m not sure which I find worse, really. This isn’t what I would’ve expected from ArenaNet at all.

I definitely agree. ANet didn’t seem to care to keep us in the loop about the “exceptions” of world transfers when they obviously KNEW how important the global community is to so many of us. As stated above, they STRONGLY implied that cross-region guesting would be possible for PvE. This news is absolutely terrible. I prefer the free transfer every 7 days.

I’m so dissapointed. ANet has showed no sense of compassion to the global community that they fostered in GW1. They could have at least warned us during betas or in the past months.

I am also very let down. I also made friends across the world in GW1 and loved that I could play with them. I even met my partner there. But she is also in the NA servers and timezone wise it would be making one of us have a ’’deadzone’’ where there would be no one online in our respective timezone in either the EU or NA.

I really wish that Arenanet would at least make it possible to play INSTANCES together internationally.
That was possible in GW1 and we all accepted the possible latency issues there, so I don’t see why we couldn’t also accept the latency issue in GW2.

Please make us able to at least play instances together to be able to play with our international friends Arenanet.

Again, anyone saying this isn’t possible given the architecture is missing two points.

1) That simply isn’t true. Two very good suggestions have been to decouple WvW from the PvE servers and just allow free transfers. Paid transfers implemented for WvW association.

The other suggestion is simply allow players to flag 1 home server on NA and 1 home server on EU. The account data is only on one datacentre at any one time (and can guest out into that region), but the player is allowed free transfers between their NA and EU homes. Any other server transfer is paid. There is no WvW conflict since NA does not fight EU.

Both suggestions use the existing transfer and forthcoming guesting technology, it’s just applied with a little creativity.

2) This is why people are angry. Someone at Anet chose how they were going to build up the architecture to support GW2. As it was built and the game went ahead, Anet knew what their architecture was and what features they were promising (or at least strongly implying). If the two didn’t jive, something should have been done.

So, if Anet found themselves in a corner unable to deliver on their promises, this was entirely their own choice. The architecture could have been built differently. Information on guesting could have been a lot more forthcoming. Either way, people would be a lot less angry.

Makes sense Glitch, but it should not come down to having to pay. No one is asking Anet for a $1M server upgrade here. Me, I’m less forgiving of misrepresentation. I won’t quit playing GW2 when it is fun to do so, and $60 in damages from such a mistrepresentation isn’t worth bringing in the lawyers.

Any further money I might have spent however, just got moved to the lift ticket fund for the local ski hills. Also, I will very seriously question any paid expansions or GW3 way down the line.

Lastly, noticing your sig, as true as it is take heart that you started something very special with Union. We’ll continue to have fun and I think our forums will stay lively regardless of hours logged in GW2. You’ve brought all of us a lot of fun, and if the members are inclined, I can completely see Union outlasting GW2 itself.

Also is there/ was there any reason WHY there was NO TRANSPARENCEY for these sorts of implementations?

I really am at HUGE loss here to see how providing some sort of communication between the community would negatively impact the Team. I for one would be very appreciative of that sort of information.

I’m not on about if someone spoke of hopes of implementing X and X wasn’t involved and mass QQ. I love hearing about what you folks hope to implement and plans on future projects it’s a lot of fun when developers do it. It’s not like you are saying you are going to implement X, as long as it’s not promises it’s fine!

Say if X couldn’t be featured tell them WHY.

I really don’t understand the barrier between features → team → community.
We have yet to see some proper information beforehand about big features such as guesting sure we find out now but we would have appreciated new say 1/2 weeks before this official announcement.

If possible, can anyone elaborate WHY we don’t hear about things that we look forward to but are kept in a dark box only be let out when it’s completely finished and have a small window about deciding what to do?

Is it some sort of red tape stopping you?

Please change the names of the regions from Europe and America into something generic like Zolean and Golean. Make players choose one of these at the beginning and after that put them to choose between the home worlds. In this way you will eliminate the stubborn mentality of joining the region you live in and players will join one of the two regions based on their names and game performance rather then their pride.
In this way the guesting will be totally appreciated

Yes, on your home server.

Let me give you an example of what I mean.

Say, I want to make my home server Anvil Rock for WvW, but my main guild is on Gate of Madness. So, I WvW on Anvil Rock, then when I want to PvE with my guild I guest to Gate of Madness. Only problem is that as I do events and such I will be gaining influence for my guild on Anvil Rock. My guild does not play on Anvil Rock, so I might as well not be gaining influence for my guild.

Am I interpreting his post incorrectly? Because when I read it, it sure sounds like that is what is going to happen.

You have no idea how much a server transfer is going to cost. It might be $30. It might be $1.

If there were better ways they would be doing it that way. Yet another person who insists upon calling the devs lazy liars. You were told why it can’t work the way you want it. Told in very clear, easy-to-understand terms. So transparent in fact, birds are flying into it as we speak. But because it’s not the answer you want, it’s not good enough. Well tough nookies. It is what it is, and you’re going to have accept it and work within it the best you can.

No, you’re wrong. We were told why they’re choosing not to do it the way we’d prefer them to. There’s a difference, and it’s quite a big one. Creating ways for us to play with our friends is not an impossibility. I don’t care how they do it, but I do care that they make sure we can do it.

Or, in simpler terms:

Nerfs to classes, implentation of more tiers of gear or broken events will not make me quit a game – any game.

Not being able to play with my friends, however? Well, let’s just say that’d decrease the longevity of any game right quick, right there.

No, you’ve been told why it’s not possible. Characters cannot inhabit both datacenters at the same time. I think that’s pretty kitten clear. You say “they choose not to” as if you believe they are purposely placing a limitation just to annoy you. And why would they do that?

And while it’s clear you want it done no matter what the cost and exclusion of other features and content, I’m sorry, but that’s simply not going to happen, especially for a free feature.

If that makes you no longer want to play the game, well that’s your choice.

Yeah, yeah… We’ve been told that it’s impossible and why it’s impossible and that we have to live with it and that it’s the best that can happen. But wait, isn’t that what they’ve said about culling issues, too? Culling has to happen, there’s no way around it, otherwise there’s too much latency and it will ruin the game for everyone. But, guess what? They’re changing the culling issue. There was enough of an outcry, there were enough people saying that it matters, there were enough people leaving the game that they decided to put in what it takes to fix the issue for those very vocal people.

Now they need to take all of their reasons why it won’t work, can’t work, and will never be changed and find the solution. Because without that solution this game is not worth playing. We’ve been patiently waiting since beta. They need to either delay releasing guesting at all or release it with the promise that fixing it, and fixing it right, is on the board, and not just whining about why it can’t be done. They’ve screwed up and implemented very bad game design somewhere along the way. First with culling, now with guesting. Both need to be fixed and not forgotten.

I suggest that all from EU servers move to NA. The reasons behind this:
- US have more lags in EU then EU is NA
- In EU there are about 20 countries while in NA are the rest of the world so more people to play with in NA
- The time line spreading across NA servers is far larger then the EUs: from Japan, Australia and Philippines up to Americas North and South plus Africa.
- if you are European, you can still play with your European friends at your own hours having the advantage of the random presence of people from other parts of the world

@Ronah: I’d be up for that. Merging all servers, I have played on NA servers and there is no lag or issues that I know of.

The mistake was keeping the centres separate and then not telling us about certain restrictions… I thought this would be the case, waited for an official answer, was correct and got helically wound around and attached to an object.

Same as everyone else, Na/ Eu? I won’t bother deciding now as there’s not much point, I lose either way. GG.

It’s not a half bad idea for a good portion of the player base to all transfer to one data centre if we could rally a critical mass of people.

I would also suggest NA – closer proximity to Anet’s offices might have some benefit in terms of maintenance. It also may not…

I respectfully believe that this guesting policy is unacceptable. We were told from the beginning that we would be able to guest between worlds without being informed of any region restrictions. We are an international guild and this cuts us right down the middle.

If this is a hard restriction then they would have known about this from the beginning and should have stated early that cross-region guesting would not be an option. They have had plenty of opportunities to do so in this forum, in other forums such as reddit, in media interviews and in teleconferences with international guilds where Anet was present. The international guilds have been vocal about their desire for cross-region guesting and have been led to believe it was coming by Anet’s own language about being able to play with people “a continent away” and by their failure to push back on these widely stated assumptions.

As for the technical reasons listed for doing this, they do not seem to be truthfully insurmountable. It should not be difficult to clone the US user database on the EU server and vice versa. If you don’t wish to clone the whole database, then you could use your current transfer infrastructure and move the record across. The user would be informed that they will be logged out for a few minutes and the record transferred. When they choose to “relinquish” guesting they will be logged out again and the record transferred back. To limit the overhead you could confine people to one international guesting per day. It’s technically feasible and would meet your stated goal of people able to play with their friends, wherever they are.

^ Another interesting prospect.

I still don’t understand why it’s a huge task to implement a thing.

Datacentres are separate surely there’s a bridge between the two allowing communication. I am not saying there are no complications about implementing as they would have done it already. What I don’t understand is the huge oversight that having two centres would stop region play and this was strongly implied on the box. It’s kinda of a lame excuse if you actually are being told it after waiting for ages.

Oversight + /communication = mess currently happening, not just “guesting”

An honest answer would have better. Easier to be blunt and honest, also looks better than hiding in the dark. Now people are kinda distrusting like me.

I used to think that this game was: Yay, a game where I get rewarded for helping people and not being a leet jerk. So many changes have just steered me away, fractals have made me kitteny, problems that haven’t been addressed made me more kitteny, now guesting is continuing to make me more kitteny.

It’s made me not bother helping people anymore. I hardly ever run AC story for new folks now or send out random free stuff for lowbies.

Things like this has just made me into a disgusting person right now that I may just take a big break from this.

Hey it’s alright though, I don’t really matter I’m just another number, statistic #6849.
That’s what I feel like, what I do doesn’t matter anymore. People leave it doesn’t matter anymore. If I truly go there’s always someone to replace me as I’m not someone special or valued.

I am not trolling or QQing. This is what all these little things have made me feel these past few weeks/months. I really want to enjoy this game again but I can’t, not really, not to my full extent when major issues exist.

From past Anet experience I was excited that this game was going to released all the manifesto ideals were great as it matched my own. Was it just marketing and have you left it and buried it six feet under?

So yea, I don’t want to be a kitteny poster anymore. I don’t like it but when these sorts of things come up time and time again it saddest me so much. You said you would build upon past experiences. Have you learnt much for communication?

I understand that some of you are disappointed that you cannot guest on worlds in another region, but considering the complexity of internet routing, our main priority is to ensure that players have as much of an uninterrupted game experience as possible, which is the reason why we have two datacenters.

On another note: I will try to get an answer to the guild influence question that has been posted a couple of times.

Psst, you know what interrupts my game experience? Not being able to play where I want, with whom I want! That’s kind of a bigger deal than the occasional database issue!

Also, this does not explain why transfers cost money. Sure, okay, I can’t guest in another region because of technology? Fine, make transfers free on a cooldown then; why are you taking money for it?

Good morning.

It looks like I had the wrong information about how guild influence works with guesting.

The correct answer is: You still get influence for your home world guild when you are guesting.

Sorry for the wrong information yesterday.

Hey Martin, How about the wrong information provided to GW players here:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/a-world-of-choice-the-regions-of-guild-wars-2/
by Regina Buenaobra on August 16, 2012

There was ZERO mention that guesting would only be regional.
By the looks of the tone of all these posts, your customers aren’t happy. I wonder if it’s because the large global guilds that enjoyed playing with members from The United States, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and The Netherlands at the same time – won’t be able to any more.

If the big issue is WvW then allow guesting other servers without letting that guest access WvW or PvP areas! It’s not that hard. If someone wants to participate in WvW or PvP on a server other than their home world make them pay the gem transfer fee – but stop penalizing the PVE Guild focused gamer!

I was waiting with great anticipation for guesting. It was my understanding from articles by ANet that we would be able to guest ANYWHERE. Now that is not the case. I am very disappointed, as is my whole guild, that are on two different servers. One in NA and the other in EU. In fact, now it is worse in that we will have to actually pay cash for the opportunity to play with our counterparts on the opposing servers where before at least we could transfer worlds for free.

I guess I am trying to say that it seems as if ANet is not making things better for the social community, but just shuffling the problems around. We never had this problem in GW1 and I am hoping it will be rectified in GW2.

personally the only good thing about this guesting is probably the fee but thats only to put a slow down on the players switching servers for the reason WvW, other than that its pointless, the whole idea of people wanting the guesting was so that them of the European servers could guest over to the American servers and vice versa.

A lot has been said on this topic, some suggestions have been made to find a compromise. I was wondering if an Anet representative could come discuss it with us or give us some news on this project. Will our suggestions be taken into account? Maybe not for this update but for another one.

I can only agree with those who feel very disappointed. Because of the split up of the servers half of us had to choose a NA server and the other half a EU server but we were sure we would be able to get together when guesting was implemented, but it seems like our community is going to be divided “for ever” and that we will never play together again.
Pity, this was such a great feature in GW1 and I’m afraid what this will mean for our community’s future in GW2

Please re-evaluate the region restriction. With it in place, I cannot even use guesting for personal needs, in order to temporarily switch to NA when I play at odd hours. And as stated by others, it is a big showstopper for international guilds and alliances.

I’m from EU and when playing other MMOs on NA servers, lag is a very minor issue compared to the social limits of such internet borders. It should be fine as long as players are informed that lag is a drawback of a possible cross region solution. But not implementing the feature in the first place would be a pity.

An utopia idea would be if all players from one region / data center will transfer to the other region / data center so they all will benefit from the guesting free with no more needed transfer fees.

I love it! Let’s do that!

- if you are European, you can still play with your European friends at your own hours having the advantage of the random presence of people from other parts of the world
:)

This was my first thought too… Make a statement that we don’t want that split and we’d prefer to cram all servers to be able to play with everybody.

i think people are misunderstanding guesting “guesting” is til when you log out and the influence you gain whilst over there will still go to whiteside ridge for instance

Dear devs.
Yes its really nice to have guesting. I tried that yesterday just to see how its working.
Well, im really disappointed.
After transfer i noticed i lost ALL guild upgrades and all influence points. Thank you. I got almost all upgraded and i wasted lot of money for licenses. Really good job.
There is no info about it at your website. Why?

I want all back. TY

Hard facts:
1. You still cant guest/transfer/join overflow from US to EU or vise versa.
2. You still cant play WvWvW, while guesting (same as now you cant join WWW while you are in overflow).
3. You still can play dungeons together with your REGION friends, without the need of guesting.
4. You still can change worlds once 7 days

+ You will be able to to pve with a friends on OPEN WORLD MAPS.
- World transfer is no more free …

So, i dont see anything usable here. The only “+” is for pvers, but why would you need that ? 99% of the pve content is soloable and not even fun after given numbers of runs.
Sorry … all i see from this update is “from now on, you have to pay a gem fee to transfer worlds” . I’m afraid the fee wouldn’t be something like 100 gems, but probably 800. Shame on you Anet!
