Guesting sounds great......
But wouldn’t it have been easier to just default all PvE zone as overflow.
Unless you work as a server developer in Anet…
No, you don’t know that.
Well sure, but that would have to be them remapping the servers wouldn’t it? I don’t know how they manage their servers currently but I’d assume there’s one or more servers dedicated to a specific world.
To make overflows for all the different maps so that more than one world shares the zone would mean a set of servers collectively hosting all the PvE maps. I’d imagine that would be a major change for devs.
Perhaps having a few servers dedicated to overflow maps to allow a player to choose an overflow option of the PvE map so that there is a option to do map events with other worlds. Maybe a option somewhere for “Join overflow”
I find that most PvE maps are pretty dead and you end up doing events by yourself. Joining a set overflow would allow for more social interaction and player cooperation which I think was what the game had intended for all these dynamic events.
Of course there would be the issue of exploitation of events by constantly switching to overflows. However, by setting it so that there can only be one overflow of the map would solve this. If the overflow is full, then its full. Queue for it.
If map overflows are constantly full maybe they can say have 3 sets of overflow maps.
1 world from each of the WvW tiers. (Since WvW tiers often represent population size)
Final thought: Wouldn’t this topic be better in the suggestion forum?
Load Distribution. Money.

They had it in gw1. it were called districts. It’s probably not that hard to do. Also they already have an overflow system, they could just adjust it.
This whole issue seems to be one that’s not exactly in their wheelhouse. However they can get it solved, it’s already 5 months late; so let’s stay out of their way and hope they can get it working.
I think guesting will make some servers dead… Imagin if my server (Ring of fire) maybe like 40% of the players there, will be guesting on another server. That kind of forces me to do the same.
Aswell as guilds… Now, EVERY single guild member of my guild is in the ring of fire server. So, after this, maybe everyone is going to be on different servers, and we would have no communication in game at all. Only through guild chat.
It is a great idea, but i think it will “ruin” some of the great team play with guilds etc.

You realize GW1 was mostly instanced, hence required a TON less server resources to run then GW2, a almost fully persistent world. The two game systems are completely different. To say “They did it in GW1, why can’t they do it in GW2?” is silly.

Dude no need to be rude. Of course I don’t know that. This is why I am starting the discussion I am wondering what other people think. Next time please be more constructive because a reply like yours is what kills Forums. I apologize if my Post seems like I was attacking Anet. I was more curious about why that was never done or why it was not done as a temporary fix till they got Guesting working.

I don’t think he was trying to be rude. It’s just hard to put tone into typing since it’s, you know, typing. Unless you a developer yourself, you can’t really make an informed guess about server setup.
