I dont mean that GW2 kills WoW i mean that GW2 is the only mmo which is a succesful descendant to WoW, its the first one who sold so many millions of copies after WoW, and the only mmo which got so much positive reviews and loved by everyone, even Angry Joe you know the famous Game Reviewer, he is really strict with the games but yet GW2 was the only game that he gave it a 10/10 in his show. Its is a really unique game, especialy the lore and races are amazing we already know what we are going to face later (the elder dragons), we can already see all the areas in the map even the future ones that we will go. WoW is the biggest masterpiece in Lore writing, GW2 is the only mmo which is a bit close to it. For me specific i was a fanatic of WoW i played it from the start, at 2011 when GW2 came it was the only mmo which made me quit WoW and every time i tried to go back to it i couldnt even sit for 5 mins but GW2 i cant quit it now mostly because i know that there are still 5 more elder dragons and i already know what im going to face while the other mmos add completely new and random stuff without a specific lore and map just popping areas out of nowhere this is proapbly the reason why GW2 was unique.

We can already guess that the expansion after Heart of Thorns will be in Far Shiverpeaks with Jormag

Please fanboy stop comparing these 2 games, they are very different and not for the same audience.

I’ve been quitting gw2 many times for break because I was bored, you say you never quit, yet you don’t even know that Jormag is a worldboss event and is dead…? After 3 years.

since i simply love the shiverpeaks.

Its not Jormag .. its just the CLAW of Jormag .. so now .. you are the one who after
3 years hasn’t noticed that.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

See, it gets downright hilarious when you accuse someone of not knowing X, then in the very same sentence very clearly don’t know anything about X yourself, either.

Good work! We all know you don’t actually play GW2, now. Well done.

The one who wants to facepalm is me. The world boss in Frostgorge Sound is one of Jormag’s champions and it’s named “the Claw of Jormag”. It’s not the Elder Dragon (who is located in the Far Shiverpeaks, an area we can’t access yet), just his liutenant. Maybe you were too bored to notice?

I personaly think that the lore of Guild Wars 2 is pretty good because it is a descendant of Guild Wars 1.

Also, are we really making a thread with a dozen people responding to Scar? …

You dont even know after almost 3 years that its the Claw of jormag a lieutenant that we kill, quite sad really that you jump into this thread spreading wrong information.

Only elder dragon we killed so far are zhaitan.

The OP seems to speak out of a pure lack of knowledge. Wow is a descendent of EQ, so this inaccurate ideology thay WoW was the first big MMO is wrong to start with. As well, there have been multiple MMOS that have sold millions of copies since WoW.

It is actually a little embarrassing, how many inaccuracies the OP presents.

There’s almost nothing I can say in this thread that won’t get me into trouble. lol

I never saw Guild Wars 2 as a successor to WoW. I think they both have similarities, but their differences are what makes this game a breath of fresh air for me. By the same token, I don’t think this game is better than WoW. It just fits my play style personally.

I’m definitely of the opinion that this game is more of an attempt to bridge the gap between Guild Wars 1 and the rest of the MMO genre than it is an attempt to build on WoW.

That said, I’m not even sure it matters. I’m enjoying the game. I think it’s well done. There’s no monthly fee. It’s absolutely gorgeous. And I play it very differently than I ever played WoW or Rift or Lotro.

I didn’t read everything but you sure you want to mention Angry Joe? Go check his gw2 review, it is clearly exagerated. He said back then that gw2 was so awesome he could play mmo once again, and all the talk i’m sure you already know.

Guess what? he didn’t play for too long and his last interview with Colin was just him asking general questions / what you hear from the community overall (especially regarding the zerk meta).

PS : Gw2 has nothing to do with WoW, thank God.

Actually there is a connection between Guild Wars and World of Warcraft – Mike O’Brien, Patrick Wyatt and Jeff Strain formed Arenanet after leaving Blizzard early in the development of WoW.

Kind of annoying for me since I’m a big fan of Warcraft 1-3 (2 is my all-time favourite RTS) but I could never get into WoW. I used to imagine that if somehow I could combine the mechanics of GW1 (2 wasn’t released then) with the lore and world from WoW it’d be my perfect game. Since finding out how Anet started I won’t let myself think about it, it’s too frustrating to imagine how close it might have come to actually happening.

Also, one minor correction: we can’t see all the areas that might be added on the map already. We know from GW1 that there are another 2 continents; Cantha and Elona. We’re cut off from them for a variety of reasons (Zhaitan was the main one, but also their respective governments, Kralkatorrik and the Deep Sea Dragon) but may well get to go back there one day.

I’d really like to get to go to Elona especially, since our GW1 characters are responsible for it being taken over by an undead dictator, I’d really like the chance to sort that out.

I know what ya mean OP
This is one of the only mmos that has stayed successful
Like there’s WoW which is sitting at probly 5 million subs (its in a baaaad place right now)
Then under actually staying in the scene are GW2, That Final Fantasy MMO, and maybe ESO
Then under those i’d say tera and wildstar

WoW is such a buzzword it’s funny. It’s like the same way people all “hate” justin bieber because it’s widely accepted to do so. Pls nobody take offense just some banter

Gw2 improves in many ways what wow and many other mmos have done up till now.

Main improvements are:

- mob tagging: no need to be on the same party to get rewards. This encourages halping people along the way.
- explorable maps: wow wasnt so bad either, but the real staple of this game are the detailed maps where you can stray out of the path and discover cool things…. Tons of them. Sadly, this hasnt been the case with either dry top nor silverwastes, lets hope it’s not a trend.
- no gear treadmill. You equip your character and you can keep it competitive forever. I have 7 chars in gw2, whereas i could only get enough time to play just one in wow.

But ere are some things where this game seriously screws up, imo

- zero immersion. The stories are boring, sometimes ridiculous, and to make things worse they even broke continuity in the personal story. There’s no story behind the quests either. In wow. There were some very cool quests if you took the time to read the texts. Here, there’s nothing like that. Waypoints, whi,e really convenient, also completely destroy immersion. I mean, why is there a caravan. When you can teleport from a to b, especially if the road is infested with bandits?
- zero travel means empty maps: you will not stumble across people going from a to b, nothing unexpected happens if you dont stumble across people.
- repetitiveness: this game doesnt allow interaction with other players, save for cooperation. This means you play always the same game, the same way. Only people can bring randomness and variation to a game, and gw2 has zero sandbox elements that allow people to do that.
- dumb story: seriously, how can the charr and human coexist?
- flawed group content design: world bosses will never have complex mechanics,to make them accessible to all players, hence they will never be really challenging. That’s why other mmos offer raids: challenging group content that can be beaten by people willing to improve their play and endure a few losses.

Thats just a few of the negatives i can think of, there many more, as there are many more positive things that this game does as well as other mmos.

I enjoy GW2. But i hope GW2 and WoW both able to keep going. I personally hated trinity but i don’t want all games become “clone of GW2” either. There are countless of supporter after trinity style, they need a game they can count on. If GW2 isn’t their answer, they always has somewhere to go. All i want is trinity player stop asking my beloved GW2 to become WoW.

Actually what made me “agressive” was the old wow/gw comparison (started since gw1), it’s like comparing apples and oranges, both are fruits but not the same taste. Just like they’re mmos but not the same target audience.

I think the OP means to say that GW2 is the closest thing to an “heir apparent” for World of Warcraft as far as he’s concerned, not the descendant. GW2 has made him pretty much quit WoW and he sees a long future for himself in the GW2 universe.

For myself, I wouldn’t call GW2 a “descendant”, because I have played since the Guild Wars 1 Betas. And although GW2 is a totally different game, they are linked by lore and one is an extension of the other. Since the Guild Wars franchise started only one year after WoW, I can’t view it as a “descendant”.

Don’t get me started on “Angry Joe” He may have a large fan base, but he says in his HoT interview that he left the game for 2 years and never played LS1 or LS2. So I don’t care how popular he is, he’s no voice of Guild Wars 2 in my book.

GW2 and WoW will eventually fade away. If there is ever a “WoW Killer” (…and does there need to be one?) it will be WoW2.

There’s almost nothing I can say in this thread that won’t get me into trouble. lol

Golly, Vayne… I think you’ve found the perfect opening line for nearly all the threads you join in on! (Poor fella…)

well, i have to thank you for this post, suddenly it became clear to me. See, all along, I thought everyone at blizzard evolved from the original rpg culture, i saw wow as a commercialization and watered down pg version of true rpg…but i thought the original blizzard had the right idea, the guys who did warcraft, diablo and the first starcraft, the corporate suits must have seen the money, jumped in and commercialized it to some mainstream king of pop, 5 and over version of the genre. When Anet first started, I was under the impression they were lit from the same original RPG flame that started mmos to begin with…..It never occurred to me that they were really just a spin off of someone else that knew their true rpg roots. Suddenly it makes perfect sense that anet has the best tools, but has no idea where to go with it. It’s like they have the sacred book of magic, but it’s written in parables to them and they just don’t get it, they’ve had their noses up wows kittens for so long, that it just looked like they knew what they were doing. -grabs the rpg torch back- really nice art though! Nothing wrong with being a little better than 2nd life either.
Now I can understand, and even respect why the guildwars 2 loyal white knights honestly believe anet will never be better than wow. At first I was shocked to hear them say that, as I just knew they were capable of not only toppling wow, but evolving the rpg culture to where it was meant to go…..but now, thanks to this post…I get it. I can put this all to rest!!! Thank You!

The secret to wows success was just a heck of a lot of marketing, and some really deep pockets helping them. Other than that …it was pretty …well…pretty

It actually is, but not in the way you mentioned.

Gw2 took the instant gratification and themepark game design that WoW started, and made the whole game around it.
