I don’t have the patience or free time to farm for gold so I have spent a decent chunk of real world money on bank tabs and bag slots. Also bought few random skins that I liked as well as few convenience items.

Short answer, probably too much… but honestly don’t regret doing so because as I have realized I buy less and less other games as I get older so I think it is fine to spend some money on the one I do play.

ANet doesn’t make anything on Gems, that goes to NCSoft who uses it as they please, a lot of those gem sales were going to Wildstar a couple years ago.

I love some of the terminology used here, such as ‘investing’ ‘patrons’ etc. You are doing no such thing- you are spending money on a product. Typical marketing ploy, make you feel ‘invested’ in the product.

Investing would involve buying shares in the parent company.

You can use “invested” correctly, in the looser sense of the word, though.

For example, you can “invest” time in a hobby – doesn’t even have to be a financial investment, let alone one that is made in expectation of a financial return.

The way you phrased it implies that it makes GW2 a less well-crafted or maintained game, which is not the case.

Well maintained? Not really.

Would you like a simple example? You are looking at it right now. This forum has been broken since it was created, with a myriad of bugs (like the one that happens when topics reach a new page) and only barebones features. Yet, ArenaNet has lost connection with the company that designed and maintained this forum, so they don’t have the knowledge of how to fix it.

Does that speak of something “well-crafted or maintained” to you? Do you think Blizzard would ever have allowed something like that to happen, or if it did happen that they wouldn’t have provided a new, better forum?

In the end, the platform you are writing in shows how much ArenaNet really cares about their players.

Certainly, US$1,375 over 3 years is more than 15/month. What, my fellow patron, did you choose to spend all that money on? Presumably you received cosmetic or convenience items that you wanted and presumably you got some enjoyment from them. That wasn’t just fourteen hundred bucks that ANet took from your bank account; it was cash you offered to them in exchange for something.

Further, if you have saved the 60% in cash on a traditional sub game, all you would have gotten is the core game. That wouldn’t have paid for any expansions or extras of any sort, including character slots or skins or whatever.

Not really. He would have the core game, all the features he has bought with gems and more, since one of the main differences between the free to play model (which is basically the model GW2 is following right now, given how big the Gem Store is) and the pay to play model is that the former restricts through a pay wall many features that the latter offer completelly in game. So, were this a subscription based game, the great majority of the Gem Store skins would have been available in game instead of through the store, we would have a decent way of obtaining the BL weapon skins instead of the scam-like lottery way we currently have, and so on, and so on.

The OP would have received everything he paid for and far, far more. In this, his comparison is perfectly apt.

Quite.

$45 at launch, since GMG had a 25% off coupon at that time. I’ll also be waiting for a sale before getting HOT.

So far, I have zero complaints about the price.

I have spent about 500 dollars in 2 years. i don’t regret a single purchase. Will i buy HoT , probably not. I really don’t like the new trait system ( making every one meta) Nor do i think 50 dollars with no expansion slot is a fair price for an XPAC

But still not as much as sub games are making off their subs. The only two games that compare to this traffic wise are FFXIV and WoW, both of which make more money off subs than Guild Wars 2 does.

In WoW’s case, of course, with 7.1 million subs playing $15 a month, as compared it’s making more than ten times what Anet is making. But I don’t think it’s ten times better. Hell, I don’t even find it better.

I could go to FFXIV or WoW right now and pay the sub, because I intentionally pay more for gems each and every month.

I do that because I don’t want to have to play those other games, because I don’t enjoy them. But since this game isn’t making nearly as much as sub games, I don’t really see the problem with an expansion costing $50.

I do believe Anet wanted to stay with the Living Story model, but it clearly didn’t work without also selling an expansion.

Apx $500 but I don’t consider it an investment per say. I regret nothing as this game has given me over 6000 hours of fun (thusfar) and if I was not spending time here I would just be spending it on less entertaining things. I was never was a fan of the outside anyways.

Thus, $205 over 3 years? Well, once I pre-purchase HoT, that is. =)

Well worth every penny….for me.

Cant see why on earth its necessary to spend more.

It’s not necessary. That’s one of the best parts of this game. You don’t have to spend money to play it. There are plenty of “free to play” games where that really isn’t the case. What you have here is a selling point.

I put in a lot of money, and if you mean invest with the return being (maybe) another sequel I guess quite a lot, but if you mean invest expecting profit, well, none.

Agreed.

I’ve spent more than that on gems but it’s not necessary. Most of mine have gone on mini pets. I also got 2 bank tabs and a character slot when they were on sale, infinite gathering tools back when they were 800 gems each, an outfit, a panda hat and a mail carrier.

None of which is necessary to play the game. The character slot and bank tabs are certainly useful (although for many people 5 slots is more than enough) but the rest are purely novelty items. That doesn’t mean I don’t want them or I regret buying them though.

It might sound contradictory but I’m much happier spending my money when it’s not necessary. Part of the reason I don’t like subscription games is I resent the idea that I have to keep paying out for permission to play a game I’ve already bought. (The other part is it’s not practical for me, I never know how much time I’ll have to play so I may end up paying for time I never use.) This way I can buy gems every month, or not, and it’s entirely my choice.

It’s the same with other things. I will quite willingly pay £70 for a meal out with my family at a nice restaurant, then kitten and moan if I get a £70 water bill. Even though I know in reality I’d much rather have clean water pumped to my home than a meal out. But it feels less like a choice and therefore more annoying.

I preordered the game for $60. It was worth my initial purchase, but I’m glad I didn’t waste any more money on it. Unless this expansion offers at least half the content the original game had, I don’t see myself spending $50 on it. Still, I wish them the best.
