I actually find myself cursing blizzard, and then having to remind myself that this is an Anet game.

For instance, if I fall off a cliff and die, while trying to get to somewhere, along what should be a path… “f-ing blizzard, is that supposed to be ‘fun’… oh wait.. STUPID ANET!”

But yeah… being a dev must lead to having a MASSIVE ego. The mountains of games on the scrap heap is a testament to it.

Devs need to understand that if they say a class can do XYZ, then the players will expect the class to actually do XYZ viably.

..but instead we get car dealers trying to tell us that the Rav4 makes an excellent tank.

“Really? I kinda think a ‘tank’ makes a good tank”
“Oh yeah, it might not be the most ‘viable’ tank on the road, but it’s more than capable of filling the role.”

…and then it’s like, “did you hear about Bob? he got killed trying to tank a moose with his Prius”

And that’s how you end up with Necros in your group saying “I can tank, any class can tank” and “Can my engineer friend come too? He’s a great healer”

…and the devs see them say it, and walk off muttering “engineers are fine”

I’m not saying I agree with this post, but I did find it hilarious. Well written +1

Fact that poster is talking about tanks and healers shows he has no grasp of class concept in this game. Those comments belong to games that actually promote tank and healer classes…

Also stating that al devs have massive egos is plain ignorant. 90% of them dont even make design decisions.

The Devs specifically said that they do not want you to skip areas all the time because it makes the game “Dull and Boring”, hence why pets aggro mobs..

Wait… what?

The developers’ comments regarding skipping areas is agreeable to me. I hate skipping areas. How this is relevant to a pet AI issue, however, is beyond me. Was this train of logic also sponsored by Amtrak?

I’ll explain, though: It’s a survival issue, not a skipping content issue. Getting stomped by six Centaurs as a level 22 Ranger, despite what anyone might like to believe, is not fun. Having your pet aggro them, for whatever reason, just adds a bit of flair to the stream of explitives that you’d likely be muttering if this were to happen to you.

Therefore, I believe the pet AI is bugged. It should be improved, but in the mean time, I’ve learned to either stop farther away from a pack of mobs (Ranger) or just not use pets at all (Necro).

It’s a bug that I believe will be addressed in due time. ANet has a lot on their plate, and I’m sure they’ll get around to it. Else, many players will indeed find the Ranger unplayable.

All MMOs are broken. It’s impossible to balance so many combat themes, it’s even difficult to understand what balance is, in that situation.

OTOH you can have a perfectly balanced game, but then you lose the colour and variety of what people make up for themselves.

I did play WoW. For 6 years. Most of them as a hunter and warlock.

And if you’re even coming close to insinuating that the pet AI and mechanics are better in this game than in WoW you’re out of your “real gamer” frickin’ mind.

This. About the most “broken” thing about GW2, IMO, is the “pet/minion/illusion/elemental” mechanic. In open world, it’s generally fine, but in instances, it’s broken beyond belief. With mesmers and elementalists, it’s not as big a deal, but for rangers and necros, it’s horrible. With rangers, their pets DPS is, for want of a real number, 33% of their total DPS. Boss mechanics generally destroy you if you dont dodge at the right time or get out of the red circles, which means pets get slaughtered during most boss fights unless you either swap at the right time or recall your pet.

Yes, I know all the counter arguments, but the fact is, there are times when your pet cannot avoid getting blasted to oblivion, and that to me is a horrible situation.

Other than this, I’m generally very satisfied with the state of GW2. If that makes me a fanboy, then so be it. Are there things that don’t need some attention, absolutely, but that doesn’t mean that the game is “broken.”

The only thing Blizzard is guilty of is, making MMOs popular.
Now they (MMOs) are filled with console kiddies that want RPG roles in their super Mario online arcade show.
Don’t believe me? Go check Defiance, not a RPG but it shows where the companies want the MMO to go, and that is straight to the milking stool.
In DAoC I used to grind and farm mobs for XP, now? Now the companies grind and farm us!
The world of the MMO is in a bad way (better add a “in my opinion” before my Aussie friend, Mr. V. pulls me up about it!), 1 step forward and 2 backwards – welcome to MMORPGs!

This right here is the biggest problem. It’s not about turning out a great new game for players to enjoy while making a decent profit as a sort of side effect. It’s about turning out something that can be milked for max return in profitability. Going as far as hiring psychologists to ensure that the game has the necessary elements to catch and reel in the people who pay.

Sometimes reading what some people find while playing I will ask myself “are the developers also players? Or are they simply post grad programmers who just happened to get hired on by a game developing company and could have just as easily been hired to develop security software?”.

Things that they say they do that is innovative is actually quite shallow. Also, I’m curious if there is some physical law that exist when it comes to game development.

The better the graphics, the worse the substance and vice versa.

Is it too much to ask for a game that is visually stunning, has a vast freedom of choice (with appropriate and permanent changes and consequences), and everything within the game world has properties and can be interacted with?

8 moths after release DEs are still bugging out (cursed shore, Penitent event chain).
Un-kitten-believable.
If Anet is not embarrassed about it, they should be.

People don’t like necro pets not just because they aggro stuff. In fact, people would be very happy if they did— consistently. Sometimes they just decide to sit there and do nothing. Sometimes they go attack a random yellow object. This is really something you can only understand if you’ve actually used them for any length of time.

Necro pet aggro depends on what weapon you’re using. If you strike an enemy with a dagger or axe, the minions will follow. Attack an enemy with a staff, and they’ll pretend they didn’t see it. Then again, Axe should be the preferred weapon of minionmancers due to synergy.

I would like to say that minions are working better then they did at release and there are certain ways of using autoattack to get them going.

The other problem about necro minions is that they do not self heal out of combat. You also cannot unsummon them. And then when the weakened minion dies and then it goes on cooldown. This makes them terrible in instances which require you move fairly quickly. If you have to sit around and go “wait, I need to heal my guys”, nobody sane will have the patience for that. You’re better off picking skills that are guaranteed to have uptime as you are on the run.

And no the game isn’t broken just because some parts are broken. I don’t like it when event chains fail, but it’s not like it stops me from doing anything I really want to do, even if it’s annoying. Of course, nobody likes to admit that sometimes Cursed Shore events will bug in the player’s favor, but that’s neither here nor there.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
