I don't like RNG weapon skins

inb4 “they drop off mobs!!1” – yeah so do Black Lion Keys (or so some legends have told).
I’ve been away from the game for a while. Did Black Lion keys specifically see a drop rate reduction? I got over 10 of them getting my first character to 80, not including the ones you get from the Personal Story.

I have over 700hours playing and i never dropped a Black Lion Key, and i am farming a lot.
what are you talking about.
i know RNG is RNG but meh.

1400 hours here. I saw 1 key drop off a mob in Queensdale 2 days ago. That’s the first key I’ve seen drop since beta weekend 1.

Could just be RNG but this was still in 2012 so you know, plenty of time for ANET to lower rates some more. I played almost exclusively with one friend of mine all the time and between the two of us we had like twenty keys, mostly from event mob drops (in events that didn’t have 30+ players farming it).
I got a black lion key today from a random drop in open world.
OP was referring to the new skins available from the new chest for this event.
I get you Op.
I know some people like to buy mystery chests or as we called them “lucky packets” but I think many people are tired of the constant RNG.
Why can’t we just buy the stuff outright too? Best of both worlds eh?
I love skins- let me buy them from you!
(edited by Morrigan.2809)
It’s funny how they put certain stuff in new chests (which are way more expensive than BLC by the way) so that not only do they get more money and dish out less available stuff (Really? Karka shells and Passion fruit for 150 gems each?) they also don’t allow people to use BLC Keys they farm through personal story for free.

Yes this whole RNG situation is getting old. Each patch its the same story : minimal content added as reward for in-game activities – maximizing the grind of said activities to get the meager reward, and lots of cool stuff (i.e the “reward content” that most MMOs add as goals for doing their new game activities or increasing interest in underutilized ones) just crapped onto the store. And not directly obtainable but walled behind gambling mechanics. Don’t get me started on the “limited time” bullkitten. ANET is skating on some thin ice here.

Too bad I’ll never see one. Thanks again for making stuff unavailable for people who don’t like spending over 10$ on RNG chests – I really love that the most about GW2.
Though you gotta give Anet props for wising up and making separate chests for item rewards. Can’t farm personal story for those, I guess so hey they’re thinking!
Legitimate question for anyone at ArenaNet: why do you guys invest so much time and effort into making weapon assets that 99% of the players will never use?
I look forward to seeing the RNG cash shop rewards for the next phase in the living story (which is my favorite part about the living story)!
inb4 “they drop off mobs!!1” – yeah so do Black Lion Keys (or so some legends have told).
maybe because only those 1% of players will pay them money.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Not sure how much more of this I’m going to allow myself to watch before I just go to another game. Limited time only stuff is fine by me. Generally if something is around a limited time I’m all about that and do nothing but that until I get the end reward. But in GW2 it’s not just limited time. It’s limited time and only available if you spend gems.

lol did you manage to type that with a straight face?
I’m sorry if adding multiple hours of content every 2 weeks is minimal for you, but it is by far the fastest in the industry.
I’m not sure what you want reward wise… we have gotten many achievements, titles and new skins all as part of the ingame rewards. The only thing added to the gem shop has been minis and weapon skins, not exactly game breaking or more substantial.
Limited time is for some of the content, it leaves behind events and additions to the world, but it is meant for people to keep coming back. You aren’t paying a sub so I fail to see how this is an issue. It literally costs you nothing to come back whenever you desire to experience the new content.
Oh, it’s the old “it’s ONLY vanity items” line again? Here’s the thing, “vanity” items, I.E “gear” (as max gear is gotten just by sneezing in this game and everyone has it by default, pretty much) IS the game. The whole thing. There’s not a whole lot else to work toward.
It’s an MMO! It’s not guild wars 1. Without gear/shinies/fluff this (like all MMO’s – not singling out GW2) is a crappy hybrid multiplayer action game with simplified stats (relative to the RPG genre) and no point . In MMO’s the items that bring “status” are the goals to grind for. We make fun of people wanting to play “dress up” but that is what makes MMORPGs what they are. We play them to get cool shinies to show off to other people as we go about otherwise playing a subpar combat-based game. It’s the feeling of struggling to make a name for ourselves in a virtual world that makes this genre “click”. Lost of MMO players refuse admit this, as its a reflection of their failure to achieve such status in real life, but that is a subject for another time.
Except most other MMO’s, you know, the real ones; have all kinds of non combat activities with their own shiny rewards to show off. Pets, fun items, gear. The staples of the MMO experience. As well as things like customizable UIs, duels, arenas, auto-follow, guild UI’s that are halfway functional, etc. Guild wars 2 doesn’t have these things. But hey, it’s “free!” which helps to deflect some of the criticism that would be leveled at a legitimate MMO from the fanbase. Like why its lacking many bog-standard MMO features, and feels cheap as a result.
Which brings me to my next point. You say I’m not paying as sub. To enjoy the game the way you enjoy other MMOs (full access to those staple mmo items), you have to pay : and more than a standard sub. It aint a level playing field, so where is the contest? Not only that, but from the beginning, even in my still-smitten phase of new MMO ownership, I have always pondered the question – would I even play this game with a subscription? And the answer is no, I would not.
I don’t want to play a cheap “free” game that nickles-and-dimes its costs deceptively, I would rather play a quality sub-based one. I had a method whereby I would spend 30.00 every 2 month in the gem store, to simulate a sub. hah! even that doesn’t get you much, and its RNG gated as well! I don’t buy lottery/scratch tickets in real life, and its a sensitive point with me. I don’t have a problem with a benign cash shop, it’s the gambling. With each new update, the shop moves further and further away from acceptability; and as a result, the game design as well. It’s the tail wagging the dog.

Ok, so now it has come to my attention that the fused weapons are gone. Wow, is all I have to say. IMO, those weapons look better than many of the weapons we can get, including named ones and I now I will never be able own one because they were apart of the RNGchest, I opened about 40 and no ticket.
I did the same thing with the Halloween items.
These examples have left a very bad taste in my mouth. Now we have another set drifting around in the chest, because they don’t appeal to me I won’t be buying the new RNGchest. Even if they did I would be weary because I’ve been burnt twice now.
I don’t know what to say here. Sad that instead of making really great skins to add as an addition to the forever game, you make decent skins on a limited time basis for limited time content and only via RNGchest. Things like this are starting to pile up and have made me start to look elsewhere for my mmo fix. I get RNG for the open world and dungeons, but what has happened with these chest ultimately doesn’t sit well with me.
Actually, let me rephrase that. What has happened with the fused weapons doesn’t sit well with me. Put them in the store and let me buy them outright. At least the SAB items I thought were done better. The holiday stuff for wintersday I thought was done well even though I didn’t purchase any, didn’t really go with any of my characters looks.
edit: actually, add them to the world as drops…(fused weapons). Or bring back the MF dungeon as a fractal or something and have the weapons drop there.
(edited by Akari Storm.6809)
i agree, people should buy it outright, or they should be added as reward in the game, maybe would be nice to have one ticket for completing the achievement so we at least get to chose 1 skin and than the rest we get via gems… but rng lottery… at least this time you can loot it from mobs.
but you need 365% magic find to have one and be disappointed.
they should also review the loot table of chests… the molten facility backpack is a perfect example of it.
we are what, millions of players? only 23 jetpack are available for sell on tp, and i don’t see it equipped in all my server…
that said btw, i loved the new back skins everyone can have, i’m really pleased about it.
there should be more rewards like that, and i’m pleased for a change they are not weapon skins but finally new armor pieces and we all know back pieces needed it the most

I really don’t like RNG weapon skins either. It just feels greedy to me.
Ive really given up. I have to assume the make more money from the gamblers then they do from the people like me who would flat out buy them if they were in the shop alone.

Yes, they do. They offered weapon skins for direct purchase during Wintersday, and bonus items in the chests during Halloween. If they sold 100,000 keys over Halloween and a million weapon skins during Wintersday, what does that say about the preferences of their players? That they prefer to buy the special items directly.
If they sold a million keys during Halloween and 100,000 weapon skins during Wintersday, what does that say? That people aren’t going to buy the weapon skins directly but they will pay over and over for a chance at the lottery prize.
They just did both at once: besides the fused weapon lottery, there are/were weapon skins available for direct sale and the gloves given as a reward for the story achievement. How many people do you think bought the weapon skins? Enough to encourage them to do it again?
Obviously, they are selling a LOT of keys if they are continuing to do the lottery.

It is greedy, and exploitative and arguably unethical. Anet have to get the message.

Sure but that doesn’t justify it, not from a company that used to pride itself on being fair with players. That company has seemingly gone.

I am a player who has no problem chucking some irl cash into the game now and then. I’ve purchased the armor skins (twice purchased the profane set). I’ve purchased quite a number of crafting boosts, back when I was leveling my crafting. And I’ve purchased other things too, which I can’t remember right now. Oh, I got the Halloween witches outfit for my necro too.
But I’m not into this gambling stuff. Let me spend money on a skin and I’ll spend it, but I’m not doing this ridiculous RNG stuff – especially not with irl money. I’ve always been against gambling.
Personally, this whole situation is just putting me off the game.
I agree; gambling is not good in games like it is currently (btw do these companies have to follow the tax guidelines and laws or whatever that normal casinos have to follow? They should at least keep the kiddies away from that stuff ; I heard too many horror stories from my days playing Nexon games to not worry about the younger players with this stuff…).
I mean sure it hooks some people whom have problems and end up dumping stupid amounts of funds into this stuff (like not just burning extra cash, but at the unhealthy level) which is why game publishers love this stuff, but they should really work on a better approach to this stuff (release more decent looking armor obtainable by just playing the game alongside the rng and/or cash shop ones? Wait that makes too much sense…).
Sure but that doesn’t justify it, not from a company that used to pride itself on being fair with players. That company has seemingly gone.
I’m not interested in justifying anything, just explaining the situation. When you know that doing one thing will bring in $100 and doing something else will bring in $20, why would you want to throw away $80? Despite what people try to imply, what they are doing is perfectly legal, and optional – the skins in no way affect the game and in fact when you see someone with it, you can assume they have deep pockets to have bought enough chances to get one.
I really don’t understand the outrage here. Companies have contests and sweepstakes all the time. McDonald’s does the Monopoly thing every year where they give away millions of dollars. People in low-income situations often eat fast food because it’s cheaper than most healthy options, and the contest encourages them to eat there more often, thus consuming even more unhealthy food than usual. McD’s makes a lot more money than they give away in the process. Where’s the outrage at this? People die from obesity-related medical problems.
Yeah, i’m kinda unhappy about how low the chance of getting the sclarite weapon tickets are. Lets just say i spent way too much real money, and converted all my in game gold into gems spent all of them on consortium chests and still nothing…

And I explained why a lot players don’t like it. It comes back to anet and their rep, if it was another mmo maker I wouldn’t blink.

I was glad to buy the Wintersday skin. It was Christmas and I wanted to support Anet and I really liked the shield. But RIP to that method. Seems new weapon skins are pure RNG gambling for now on. ;/ I woulda just straight bought the Dagger like I did the Winter Shield but unfortunately I can’t and will never have it. Seems they only want money from the big, heavy spenders who dump 200+ dollars into gambling.

You’re welcome to your opinion. From what I’ve seen, most of the people who don’t like it are the ones who dropped $100 or more and didn’t get lucky. If they got something out of it then they don’t have a problem with it.
When I worked in a convenience store, I saw people who hated the lottery tickets buy $100s worth and complain while they scratched them off, then come back for more.
I don’t care one way or the other. I won’t spend any money on these, and don’t care whether I get a skin. But whether you approve or not, the fact remains that this kind of thing is a huge seller, and the genie isn’t going back into the bottle now.

A select few types I don’t use from the F/F NPCs. Wintersday skins were the equivalent of Molten and Living weapons, except Winter ones weren’t shoved into RNG/Gambling boxes, which seems to be how these things will always be now.

TL:dr Your statements are incorrect.
DEFINITELY NOT BUYING. Might chuck some gold at it but i aint touching my RL wallet on this one.
As for drop rate;
Iv had a few BL keys in my mere 400 hours.
Not a single southsun chest yet tho, and iv been killing karka all day.
Back on topic, +1 on the RNG hate. I think you have a huge amount of the community behind you and we will either see arenanet change stance on this in the future OR players will begin to leave in droves.
I would have assumed the sales figures between RNG chests and the molten picks/quiver/shield/bow/mace would make it blatantly obvious to anet and ncsoft. I guess they need some more trys to learn the lesson.
Unless ofc the RNG chests outsell the available skins… Which would mean the universe is one kittened up puppy.

I don’t mind the RNG weapon skins in chests every now and then, but RNG chests after RNG chests can a bit excessive and hard to keep up with. As a consumer, I would probably spend more on direct sales as I would need to get skins for my alts and main. Unfortunately this doesn’t pertain to all consumers. It’s the money that speaks, and I’m without a doubt that we will continue to see this trend of paying for a chance in the future.

Actually I hadn’t even thought of that. But, yeah, weapon skins are available through multiple channels including playing the game, buying from the cash shop, buying from the TP, and the RNG lottery. Ignoring this doesn’t make it go away.
The latest RNG lottery boxes drop as loot in the game, too. No keys required, you can get a skin without ever spending a gem. It’s a slim chance, but it’s still a chance.

Legitimate question for anyone at ArenaNet: why do you guys invest so much time and effort into making weapon assets that 99% of the players will never use?
Hey, you know these guys that make this game? For them thats called “work”. It’s this thing growed-ups do to make money so people can have houses and clothe their children etc. When people buy stuff it makes the people who work at A-Net happy, becuase it means the company continues to pay their salaries. Because, otherwise, this being a buy to play game, once the money ran out…everyone would get sacked! And then their would be no more A-Net…and no more game.
Happy to help. Subscription-based games are available.
Fact, if new skins were available on the Gem Store, they would make less money. This is because they would cease to be rare and no-one would want them. While it’s a gamble, its a way of showing the world….“hey, I won something”. Only way to get past this is not to care.

This is not why they would make less money. In fact it’s hard to say whether they would make more or less. Do the handful of people that pay hundreds of dollars to keep gambling out-pay the people who would otherwise pay if there was no long-shot gamble involved?
When considering the people that pay the absolute minimum to get gems to then convert them to gold to get whatever it is from the Trade Post for much much much cheaper than the gambler did, would they spend more or less if the item was obtained from a direct gem purchase instead of through a crapshoot gamble?
Would the people who never buy gems and just farm up Kitten-loads of gold be more likely to give ANET money for gems if the item was purchasable with them directly?
I don’t think you thought this paragraph through. The rarity of the item has absolutely zero to do with why most people want it. Sure it matters for the elitist collectors that love flaunting their rare spoils but for every one of them there’s at least a thousand that wouldn’t give a kitten because they just like how cool it looks.
As to that first bit about “this is their work” well… that’s all well and good. It would just be nice if “their work” lined up with “their philosophy.”

Of course it does…its the ONLY point to playing a game that has nothing to offer besides cosmetic skins. You didnt think your paragraph through.
ANET is skating on some thin ice here.
lol did you manage to type that with a straight face?
Sure, pretend everything as should be with a straight face, you as everyone else know the gamble/gems aviable only items are plain wrong, sooner or later we all are tired of the trickstery
They have to pay the bills somehow. I would much rather a cool looking skin be ‘pay2win’ instead of something with actual stats.
It also helps define what the word rare means in the game. Sadly, Legendaries are not rare…every world boss I go to or half the time in WvWvW someone is wielding a Sunrise or Twilight.
The fused skins are actually rare though. Ironically, making them more valuable than a Legendary at this point.
Too bad I’ll never see one. Thanks again for making stuff unavailable for people who don’t like spending over 10$ on RNG chests – I really love that the most about GW2.
I only like PvP (not true, but stay with me), but I like the new flower backpack. Too bad I’ll never see one. Thanks again for making stuff unavailable for people who don’t like running around Southsun Cove.
See? See how whiny it looks when it’s someone else doing it?

At this point they are priceless – literally, as I think that because they are account bound, if you don’t already have one, there is no way to get one.

If you’re going to use an example, at least use one that makes sense. Apples and Oranges.

Nothing to offer in what sense? There’s no/minimal gameplay or story? The game world is small? There’s no reward for what you do? Saying the game has nothing to offer is pretty… well… telling, I guess I’ll say.
All facetiousness aside, is it in the sense that a collector doesn’t see value in the cosmetics that are very much there unless they’re rare? Then that goes right along with what I said: it only matters to collectors, and for every individual collector there’s many many many more people who just want it because it looks cool.
Or do you think everyone playing the game is a collector that only cares about how many other people have the item?
Nobody likes RNG weapon skins, nobody. Not even Vayne. Seriously…not. even. Vayne.
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”

The bean counters at NCSoft and Nexon like it well enough.

LMAO! This is true. Not even, Vayne…and he’s a fan boy!
You said that, not me! :P
Unfortunately I think we’ll just have to deal with it, as long as it gets them more money than outright selling the weapons at a fixed price.
