I've never dodged
Question: If you have a single key for dodging, how do you pick which way you’re going to dodge? I like being able to quickly go left, right, or back as I choose with a quick doubletap of my thumb (I seldom dodge forward unless I’m running through aggro with the intent of escaping). Given that I move with my mouse and have my left, right, and back movement handy to my thumb on my HEX, wouldn’t it be -more- work and slower to have to hold down the button with my right hand and tap a keyboard key with my left?
Press V+one of WASD and you dodge in the direction you pressed.
I only dodge that way, turned off double tap since it can easily get you killed in jumping puzzzles
If don’t double-tap to dodge, you are very bad at this game
Double tap takes way too much of a time, separate button(preferably mouse 3/4 or 5) is much more efficient.
Yeah you definitely don’t want to hold down “dodge” and THEN tap movement, or you’re just going to dodge backwards and the move will do nothing. Tap the dodge button while you’re already moving in a direction – since double-tap moves you fractionally in that direction before the move anyway, you’re really not losing precision. Plus you don’t have the infinitesimal not-moving-at-all delay in between.
I mean, I’m sure once you’re really good at the option you chose, either works. If you’re more comfortable with double-tap because you came from FPS games or something, by all means continue – but if you’re not used to dodging, it’s probably easier to learn if it’s bound to a separate button.

I have dodge bound to my middle mouse button.
Well, I prefer double tap because I’m used to fighting games. I’m used to dash and back dash by double tap very fast with stick/gamepad.
I use the left shift key to dodge. It works really well because my left pinky naturally rests on the shift button. The problem comes when I use the shift button for something that isn’t dodging (like linking or capitalizing) I do a roll at the same time. It’s kind of annoying but I don’t really see a better key for dodging than the left shift key.
I double tap np with all 3 of my 80’s..warr,thief, guard.. and for lvling the guard just keep green armor w/in 5-10 lvlsand a green GS 5 lvls or less to your lvl until 60+ then switch to yellow and beat the hell out of every normal mob and most vets…
and dont beleive the thief talk 90% of us just spammed shortbow 1 key at everything all the way to 80 and die like once. Yes its that easy and its a bag collector for wvw zerging too.
Bind a different key to dodge and disable double tap. Trust me you definately want that. As far as how to choose the direction just hit that directional key then dodge. You will definately start wanting to learn to dodge soon though because as you get into dungeons and fractals if you don’t dodge you will likely die a horrible death.
Double tap is the way to go in my opinion. Much greater control over timing and direction.
no way.
I challenge you to use your double tap under water to evade more efficiently than a player with a key bound.
You will be able to get away much more efficiently with a key bound.
Try it yourself.

Can’t you just pull the mouse in the direction you want to dodge prior to hitting the dodge key?
I am not in game atm and it has become so much second nature to me that I can’t actually remember how I do it, lol…

Once I did this and stopped double-tapping it was like night and day. I used to miss the dodge all the time.
Stuff that requires dodging:
The harder PvE events (e.g. Temple events in Orr)
All Dungeons
As a guild we do Orr temples semi-regularly.
I’ve done most dungeons. Spent a lot of time in TA for 2 guildies to get full sets of gear CoF of course, and others.
I’ve never dodged. And no, I wasn’t or am not dead most the time either.
I never use it.
