I wouldn’t be playing at all if there was a monthly fee. I got a lot of other games I want to play, that don’t cost anything but the buy price.

A game that’s released with a monthly fee today, is just an indication that the game is so bad, even the developers themselves don’t believe in it. Games are so popular now, that the money made from purchases alone, is enough to make a profit. Anything ells is just icing on the cake.

Better question: how many percentage of people wouldn’t be playing if there was a subscription fee. Perhaps we’d lose like 95% of the players, and gw2 will turn into a ghost town like heart of the mists.

Wouldn’t pay a monthly fee, this game is one of the best B2P games out there, but it’s not good enough to be worth $15 a month even as I much as I love it. I can pay a monthly fee elsewhere and actually get monthly content updates that are fun or new.

Subscription fees insure quality in the ever changing landscape of crappy B2P and F2P games, try playing a sub game for a few months then going back to a F2P model and you’ll understand why F2P is destroying the MMO industry. At least Guild Wars set the bar at $60 before they give it all up so to speak, the buy to play model is far superior in my eyes than a free to play, possibly even as good as a sub base.

I see what you are saying. Really this question boils down to personal opinion. I found PS2 to be a shallow awful remake of the original myself, but plenty of people enjoy it still. The sub fee is a moot point, if its worth 15 a month to you, then it’s worth it. It may not be for someone else. I just tend to lean towards sub games myself and I will say GW2 was a breath of fresh air not having 15 or 30 dollars tacked onto my bank statement every month.

That is very much a matter of opinion. I have never played a sub game where I thought I was getting my money’s worth. The closest was Rift. I will agree that most F2P games are a waste of bandwidth. Freemium games can be even worse. ToR’s model is heavily geared towards making the free experience unfriendly, coupled with not-so-subtle hints like, “You could have another quick slot if you subbed.”

GW’s B2P model worked just fine for me. Heck, if I played WoW I was also going to pay for expansions. Why pay a monthly fee for what imo was an inferior game. Yes, I know a lot of people like WoW. Well, a lot of people like Justin Bieber. I’m just not one of them, in either case.

A fee wouldn’t achieve much I’m afraid. Sure they may hire even more people, but the bigger they grow, the more effort they will need to keep cohesion. The vast majority of disciplines required to build a video game are creative in essence. What I mean is, you can hire more workers to build more cars/houses/whatevers, but when it comes to, for instance, the next balance update, adding more game designer around the meeting table will just mean they’ll be wasting time discussing too much diverging opinions.
Even for 3D modeling, you can’t just hire more modelers and get more armor skins and stuff in the game because everything the 3D modelers do must first have the art director’s approval. If you don’t have that, the game will just start falling because of lack of good cohesion and coherence in any facet of the game’s design (even right now we get some very debatable things like Rox’s eyes.

In short, I don’t think more money equals more quality, there is a point when a structure cannot achieve much more than what it’s designed for. Not to mention, of course, the fact that a B2P model most certainly gains a lot more audience because of its fair price than it looses becauses of the loss of quality some believe it causes.

The moment the game will have a monthly fee, I will stop playing it. The game is fun at the start, but several aspects of the game needs work (bugfixing, lot’s of balancing, etc…).

Another reason, why I wouldn’t be paying is ‘the living story’. It’s a nice idea, but … well… the general story (untill now can be summarized as “Many people are being kill and driven from their home. One of the refugees lost his glasses. Now go find those glasses”.
Why should I care about the stuff they lost? :/

Paying every month would also mean that I would need to pay to be able to join in on any of the events, and (based on all the updates we’ve already received), it’s not worth it (my opinion).
I found the Halloween event to be fun. But the ‘Lost shores-event (november 2012) basically just added an island that I don’t care about (because there isn’t anything to do there).
Wintersday (december) wasn’t any fun (for me) either (the same event repeated in a different location for 14 days?).
And (in my opinion) the ‘flame and frost’ is (like I already said) very boring, and also has a very bad storyline (and flame and frost is going on for 3 months now :/ )

If they ever (would) make an expansions then I highly doubt I would buy that either, because most of the updates up until now, aren’t actuall all that good… (I want guild housing, personal housing, mounts (just for the sake of being able to brag with them :p) and actual ‘guild wars’. (yes, I know where the name comes from, but I still think it’s weird for to have the name ‘guild wars’ but not include an actual ‘guild war’ :p )

But that’s just my opinion.

Most people I tell about GW2 tell me they haven’t bought it themselves because they assume there is a monthly fee. When I tell them there isn’t, they are all of a sudden really really interested.
I wouldn’t of purchased it if it had a monthly fee. It’s probably good enough for one (if WoW can have one, GW2 definitely can), I just don’t agree with that philosophy. I usually play huge online games for a couple/few years, and even $20/month is $720 after 3 years. too much for something that passes the time. I never get into these games enough to make it my life.

This doesn’t make sense from a logical stand point, 50 cents a day is next to nothing when most hobbies cost thousands of dollars.

If someone is that worried about getting their money’s worth out of 50 cents every day, I would say they should be trying to find a job rather than playing a game anyway.

Just my opinion of course, before someone takes this seriously.

The problem with subscriptions is that once the money has been paid for the month you have to play every day, or the equivilent hours over a few days, to make sure you get your moneys worth.

Even if you can afford the money it’s still a waste. I can afford to buy a coffee every morning, but I don’t always want to. I’m not going to buy one and then decide if I want to drink it and let it go to waste if I don’t. Same way I don’t want to pay to play a game I then don’t have time for.

(Also in my experience it’s people who have jobs who are both more aware of not wasting their money and more likely to be concerned they might not have time for an MMO, what with having to go to work and all that.)

I would have never started GW2 if it had a subscription because I would be compelled to play for the wrong reasons.

However, on the other side of the coin, this game would be way better if it did have a sub fee. Since the sub fee is a simple and easy business model, the RNG wouldn’t be nearly as bad and things like ascended gear and guild missions, would have way more content than there actually is. The way it is now, it’s making huge intervals of down time between guild missions and acquisition of ascended items via laurels and that seems like a lot of content but really, it’s only hours worth.

Think about how long it takes to complete a daily, like half an hour tops if you’re focused. It only takes ~15 hours of total play time to get an ascended accessory, which is very short over a span of a month. This is called time gating, and while time-gating is terrible for the players, it’s wonderful for business! Just like RNG, wonderful for a business model such as the one we see today. One of my guildies spent 100 real dollars on gems, converted it into gold, and flushed tons of rares down the mystic toilet in hopes of getting a precursor. That’s the business model working its magic.

With a sub fee, the same company wouldn’t put us through that. However, with a sub fee, this game would have probably failed by now.

one it would work that way except for the fact that you aren’t bleed out at 50c a day, but for most games 15-30 dollars a month. Or if you want a discount even a larger chunk every couple of months. We are talking burst damage to the bank account versus sustained which is a lot harder to compensate for.

two, I do have a job, I also have a family and a bills to contend with. And then there is food, and the rest of the daily necesities. Fuel, shouldn’t forget about fuel,

three, time. I work 50-60 hours a week. That is just what my occupation intales from me. That is outside of the time that I spend with my family, and time that I must set aside each day for physical fitness (required by my other occupation as an army reservist). So in turn what I have left is monday which is guild night. and if I am lucky 1-2 other hour long sessions a week. Thus we are no longer looking at 50c a day but much more.

It would be nice if this game would be my only expense in life but it is not. And yes, I did take this seriously since your comment was pointed at my “lazy” kitten. Perspective is a kitten some times.

I agree with Danikat, once you pay you feel compelled to play. I’m currently starting to get annoyed at GW2 for compelling dailies to get laurels. If there was only any other reliable way to get laurels… it’s really a turn-off to be forced to do something, be it play otherwise the month’s subscription goes to waste, or log on for half an hour to get a laurel.
That really takes the fun out of it.
I have yet to meet the game that I want to pay a subscription to play, nor can I even imagine what such a game might contain.

This is actually a tough question for me and one I had to think about for a little bit.

I really enjoyed GW1 but not because of the F2P model. It was the lore, the events, the expansions, all of that. But a time came that my guild shrank and the core of us moved on to a sub game.

Enter LotRO. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth. Nice graphics, lots of space to explore, a more traditional MMO from GW1. And a new experience for me as my first traditional MMO. And I paid a subscription for it. Still do in fact. I’m downloading the most recent update as I type. But my sub only costs $10 a month. And yes, I know LotRO has gone F2P but I enjoy the subscriber benefits enough to keep paying.

But I’m not sure GW2 is a game I would pay a monthly fee for. There are little things that bother me that I didn’t encounter in LotRO. And that game is the only thing I have for comparisons. But there are a few pluses that might get me.

All in all, it would be a hard decision for me.

No, nay, never. I’ve payed for other MMOs in the past and it has been worth it, GW2 wouldnt be.

The game is good enough for a F2P game, but far from the quality to justify a sub fee. The attracting factor at start was the alt friendlyness and no grind philosophy, which is slowly fading away patch by patch along with time gated progression etc.

I’m honestly not sure how long I’ll keep playing if it gets even more alt unfriendly. Other MMOs are on the horizon, some of them are probably good F2P alternatives.

I’ve played two subscription games before, which were massively different in implementation of the concept:

1. In Dark Age of Camelot, you could build a character to max level and have them fully geared within a single digit number of weeks playing casually, and in under a week if you were focused on it. The reason to stay subscribed was that once you were geared, you were basically done with grinding — you could participate in the PVP endgame which was the whole point of the game. Perhaps some people saw gaining RVR ranks as a “grind”, but fighting other players to advance (somewhat in stats/abilities, but mostly in prestige) is hardly comparable to killing the same NPC over and over again as in other MMO’s. Which brings me to…

2. WOW. All the people I’ve seen complaining about subscription games seem to be complaining about WOW or WOW-influenced systems, where there is no endgame “plateau” that is fun in and of itself. Everything is a progression, and has to be rate limited, random chance limited, etc. to keep people “hooked” and ever getting to a steady state. I did that for a bit, and got absolutely sick of it. Very pretty game, fun gameplay, but horribly repetitive and sadistic progression design.

The benefit of a subscription game is that they actually have money to spend on development and support. Specifically support — I am continually disgusted with the level of cheating / exploiting that is ingrained in the culture of GW2, since there is absolutely no one actively trying to enforce otherwise. In DAOC you could /appeal and get a response FAST if it were something really bad; they cared about the integrity of the game. Not so with F2P — as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Exploits go on for days, weeks, even months, with no repercussions for abusers.

There are opportunities for a happy medium, like in Eve. You can pay for a subscription, or you can play enough to trade in-game resources for a subscription time token purchased by someone else. Tradeable subscription time is their version of gems, for people who want to advance faster (or alternately, play for free). It’s a simple and elegant solution that doesn’t even require a cash shop.

Why am I not still playing Camelot? I’d love to be, except:

1. When EA bought Mythic, they put it on life support. For example, they actively went in and broke the website where you could check your daily, weekly, lifetime etc. progress relative to all other players, and then they didn’t care enough to revert to the prior code which actually worked.

2. Due to the amount of time since the last active work on the game, and flagrant neglect (see 1), the population is dwindling way down. This I wouldn’t mind since the one server still remaining at the time I last played still had enough folks to keep things fun, but the Camelot Herald breakage was the real dealbreaker for me.

I was initially surprised, not only at the amount of “no” votes, given the prevalence and vehemence of the Online Modern Tyrian Defense Corps, but more specifically at the amount of “wouldn’t have been here in the first place” votes. With that said, I too join my voice to that chorus. Whilst I must admit that GW ranks amongst my all time favorites of any age, genre and medium: My Zealous, Proselytizing, loyalty to the Franchise may have been enough to get me into the subscription-door, but I strongly doubt it. Even if it had, I would have de-activated long ago, due to the experiences I’ve now had 250 years later and reflecting upon all that we have lost in that time.

Respectfully,
Monk Anchorwind.

Nope.
I’ve grown to hate stacking things that drain my credit card.
I’ve seen people going bankrupt by saying “oh well it’s just 10 bucks/month” and then end up having their monthly pay halved due to them.
I’m ready to buy expansions or whatever, just not monthly fees of any kind.

Plus Anet has shown that MMOs don’t need monthly fees to keep the game going, pretty much demonstrating that all those monthly-fee MMOs are big money-grabs.
We have been fooled until now.

I’d probably never have bought the game. Came here because of the no sub :P

Almost feel like I’m stealing since I haven’t spent a cent here yet, gold —→ gems ftw.
