GW1 was not an mmorpg so GW2 is your true first mmorpg (unless you played other between that time). There is a big different in the co op type online game such as GW1 and a full on open world mmorpg much like GW2. For the most part GW2 is a far lighter mmorpg (not that much grinding gear creep etc.. the stander mmorpg set up) then most old ones and even when you look at newer ones.
I would say GW2 is pretty safe for the foreseeable future. Large fanbase all around the world, decent profit and turnover, and NCSoft having nothing else this successful on the Western market right now (Lineage I and II in Korea is their cash cow) would make that even more so the case.
Let’s see what NCSoft does with Blade and Soul.
TO answer the title question:
Yes, most likely eventually. Nothing lasts forever.
GW2 is in absolutely no danger of being trashed like CoH. For one thing Paragon studios was a company formed by Ncsoft unlike Arenanet which acquired two years after the company was founded so to compare the two companies is like comparing apples to oranges.
Historically Ncsoft has had a hands off policy when it came to GW and GW2 development, only concerning themselves with the distribution rights and marketing in the East.
We don’t know exactly what happened internally at Paragon studios but the aging engine wasn’t doing too well it would Seem and Ncsoft found it to be more profitable to shutter the studio and funnel money to its other projects.
Tldr: paragon studios is different from Arenanet and Ncsoft has let Arenanet do its own thing as long as Ncsoft has a cut in distribution rights.
Guild Wars was my first real MMO, so of course I had to buy Guild Wars 2.. I’d only been waiting 5+ years. My issue is, I’m scared to play it. I’m scared to get into it. I don’t want to love a game (and I could really LOVE this game!) so NCSoft can just trash it like they CoH. I still love ANet but I do NOT trust NCSoft.
However, I noted that Guild Wars is still running.. no content updates (as far as I know) but it’s not been shut down. Did ANet make sure that won’t happen?
My friends and I were all CoH players.. we won’t touch anything having to do with NCSoft except the Guild Wars games.. can someone.. re-assure me? =/
GW2 had nearly twice the income that CoH had over an entire year. GW2 will be here for a long time but it won’t ever elicit the same feelings I had for CoH. While I enjoy GW2, I do not love it with the same passion I had with CoH.
NCSOFT isn’t the MMO killer as some have portrayed. CoH was the only questionable closure and more the baby thrown out with the bathwater when they decided to close Paragon Studios. The other western created MMOs never made significant money between launch and shutdown other than GW and CoH, and lack of a follow up game to CoH that could appeal to both sides of the Pacific doomed Paragon Studios and in turn CoH.
To put things into perspective:
League of Legends got bought out by a Chinese equivalent some years ago (actually, a much, much bigger company that’s so big it makes NCSoft look paltry). But the franchise is still in Riot’s name and developed/operated internally.
NCSoft likely plays the same role in ArenaNet’s operations.

I’d have more faith in that if you could say that while your character’s standing in the Cantha section of DR.
Hm?

Now Riot has hired foreign artists for some of their splash art, but the entirety of the game is still run by Riot.
