I am on Darkhaven and have friends who are on other servers who just tried to come back themselves.

Both my server and their servers seem dead. I couldn’t find anyone to talk to in map chat in whats left of Lion’s Arch for a long time. Then I went into WvW and literally no one was there.

No map chat or anything until one other person from my realm ported in.

I keep trying to come back every few months to give GW2 another chance, but it just seems the population drops dramatically every time I try.

Smaller servers are dying out because ANet insists on adding content which just isn’t feasible to do unless you’re on a high pop server. And yes, a lot of people are just moving on to greener pastures.

Apparently Anet learned from all the other mmorpgs out there as to do what works and doesn’t work, EXCEPT for the ‘driving away players with content that demands huge numbers of coordinated groups’.

I can’t even begin to count the number of times I have seen this happen with other successful mmorpgs…….yeesh

Is Darkhaven a known WvW server? I belong to SoS and it can also be very quiet when a commander isn’t around, we’re no BG but I think we do ok in WvW.

Just for curiosity sake I’ve just guested to Darkhaven and the place is anything but empty.

You should’ve probably put this complaint/observation in the WvW section… because the PvE population is fine.

Ya that server has a much smaller population than higher tier servers. I’d suggest transferring if you want to see more people while your exploring the world in places people aren’t always at like doing map completion. That’s why I moved to tarnished coast because there is always people popping up in maps that I would think nobody would go to while I’m doing map completion and its enjoyable to see people doing as I am.

Darkhaven isn’t empty and we’re not dying… we’re far larger in overall population than our WvW rank suggests. Gendarran very frequently has a rather lengthy queue since the recent patches hit, let alone LA…

All in all, no the game is not dying, thousands of people play every day on the one (relatively small) server that you’re on, and there are 50 other servers…

No offense but I am not seeing what you are and I don’t think you have the data to say that thousands of people play per day, that is just a number you are pulling out of the air.

I was in WvW last night alone….literally…the most action I found was 2 hours later a commander and like 5 people got in and we just walked up to all the places and took them with 0 resistance, a siege golum and a battering ram.

I am not trying to start a fight or anything, but please don’t be blind to the fact people are leaving.

That being said I am going to keep trying and check out the PvE areas more…maybe I am hanging out in the wrong spots. Thanks for the input guys!

Reasons why your server seems “dead”

1) Guesting to popular servers to play with skilled players in PvE
2) Transferring to higher tiered servers to play with skilled players in WvW
3) Your server is populated in time zones opposite of you
4) Everyone’s doing content in places that you’re not

I haven’t seen the NA servers go below “very high” on population in a long time. If anything, the game has continued to get MORE players since I started playing, not less.

So you get that assumption because it’s written on the servers list window?
It must be true then.

Yes it does lose players. like any other game after couple of years after the release. and the anet updates dont really help to change that anyway

It is well known that the statistic written there is the number of player accounts who own a character on said realm and not the concurrent players. There you go.

Which however doesn’t explain how the population can shift between different levels during a day.
Or are you suggesting that people are constantly transferring back and forth between servers?

That’s not what’s discussed here. I was just stating that even if there’s only 2 people playing on the whole server at a given time, that server would still be counted as “very high” on the list. Because that’s not what that number is. Is the number of accounts made since game release who own a character on said server. Even players who stopped playing a year ago are still counted.

So by that number there, you can’t say that the game has continued to get more players.

Reading the forums I think I can confidently say there are exactly 151 players total that play the game.
They all guest to every event and there is a 150 person hardcap on zones, so the person who is 151 at the time cannot take part. This person is not a guest so maybe if you want to be generous there is one person per server that does not guest and 150 that always guest all the time.

Well, I cannot say if this game is losing too many players or too few.

The only thing I can say is, that in the last 1 1/2 years, this game has degenerated from the hope for the whole MMO genre to a generic asian grinder with a cash shop and crappy updates.

Do you blame the players for not logging in for this?

This. But apparently it’s easier to say “player are leaving”, since that is based on personal perception and not logical deduction.

Anyway I’d advise transferring to one of the high population servers, always people around.

I completely disagree. This game hasn’t at all degenerated from the hope of the entire MMO genre. It was never going to be that in the first place, and anyone who thought it was was fooling themselves. Even if a company wanted to be the next big thing, the playerbase is too divided to allow it.

Nor has it become a generic asian grinder. And the cash shop barely influences my gameplay at all. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I spent money on that crap. The game is fine without it.

its a mix. Some players are leaving because of balance issues and bugs (pretty regular for any MMO) but I imagine most are just taking up root in higher populated servers. Between transfers and guesting your server might have more then you realize but everyone is flocking into the tier 1 severs at the moment because of story events requiring large numbers.

I’d say Atlantis. Or wherever McKay wound up eventually.

This!

This is awesome, and as one of those people who no longer bothers to log in for this very reason I completely agree.

I pop my head in every six months or so to see if ANET has fixed this farcical travesty of what could have been a great game.
Newp!

So have fun with your mythic forge and gem shop grinding, your gimmicky boss fights and zerg-festing. I and all the thousands of people who have left may come back if ANET ever dumps this foolishness and adds the holy trinity (as a bare minimum) to make the content small group playable and fun for once.
See ya in six months.

It’s not a question of willing or not willing. I’m not willing to buy a McDonald Hamburger, but enough people will. McDonalds isn’t likely to go out of business soon.

Anet sells a lot of stuff. Some of that stuff is cute. People buy the instruments. I don’t. People buy costumes…I have seen blue people walking around. But I don’t need costumes or instruments to play this game. I don’t even need transmutation stones.

I did buy a broom when I saw the charr animation on it, though. It’s not like I’ve never spent a dime. I’m just saying that if I hadn’t bought that broom, it wouldn’t negatively affect my game play.

The cash shop isn’t this horrible, insidious thing you need to spend money on to enjoy the game as some people seem to imply.

All I got to say is this
-No one can make the argument for a high or low population due to the lack of accurate info displayed (A-Net did this for a purpose, to take creditability away from post like this)
-Since A-Net can not or will not give us those numbers, some third party will have to come in and perform a neutral study.
-Selling the 2 year game to new players is less likely, players leaving are more likely.

Just yesterday i noticed that the only server left on “medium” is Vaabi, so all other servers are now on “high” or “very high”. Thats not a sign for me that the game is losing players.

But i know, of course people will no say that the server status is manipulated or whatever.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Sadly, the only proof that it’s not is ANet releasing numbers, which can then have the saying they’re faked or just made up.

Not really a way to get around it.
