Agreed. And to all the people saying to take time to explore, I do. I love running around areas doing all the vistas, POI, DE, etc. But sometimes my time is limited, or a friend’s time is limited, and we need to be in the same place right away. Why should I have to pay for that? It wasn’t in GW1 and it doesn’t belong here either.

Scaling waypoint costs to level is senseless. It should be a flat rate determined by how far you’re going. Did it somehow become harder to teleport my character across time and space because he’s tougher and better at shooting a gun?

It’s just an aggravating goldsink and it should be adjusted to make sense.

Sooo… while your friends run to the way point, and likely fight their way to it. You leave them behind, and teleport to the way point. Then come here and complain that you have to pay for something that was completely optional, when you had the choice to run with them and help them instead.

It’s actually the other way around. Your low level friend uses waypoints to hop around the map because their costs are still measured in coppers instead of silvers and you, being the high level friend helping him, has to run after him because you can’t afford to hop around the map.

^^Provides one randomly made up story that doesn’t contribute at all to thread.

Seems legit.

Actually it usually happens like this: I’m on exploring in the norn area. My brother logs in and want to do personal story stuff in the charr area. Hes in black citadel. I dont want to run back to a city, asura to LA then asura to BC, so I waypoint into BC.

We do something there, and then he’s required to go somewhere explorable for his primary that he has already been. We waypoint there to save us time since he has to get off soon.

Finish the quest, he gets off. I want to go back to norn areas. But I don’t feel like running back to BC and taking 2 Asura gates, so to save time I waypoint back to where I was.

This means I’ve waypointed 3 times all just so that I could have a good time with my brother. Should I really have to pay in game money to turn GW into a more social experience? Or delay people while I run to cities and take 2 asura gates to save some money?

We should be able to play with our friends wherever and whenever we want, just like it was in GW1. The cost serves no purpose, as they could easily increase any other form of gold sink in the game and I wouldn’t complain at all.

I played smart, and refused to use waypoints at lower levels. You get better experience by actually exploring the zone, and doing the dynamic events you run into. The only reason you should ever need to waypoint at a lower level is to get back to a town to repair, or take a break. By that time, you will have already made the 2-4 silver it takes to WP for an 80 and a lot more.

I’d tell your friend to stop wasting money on waypoints, and actually play the game; instead of hoping from heart to heart or whatever he is doing that needs him to be hopping around.

I agree with this. If GW needs to have a waypoint cost to make game mechanics balance then at least make it fair and standardized. However, I agree with Katie that to make the game truly social, waypoints ought to be free.

Maybe you can help your friends easier because you have more time to spend doing events and getting gold. I’m not broke either, but I hear that at higher levels the costs start to really stack up if you travel around.

Besides, what is it to you if they are free? It won’t change the game negatively for you at all, and will hugely benefit those of us who want to travel without considering the cost.

I think the primary issue here is that the cost of using the waypoints scales up with both distance and level. Why does it cost more to use them when you’re higher level? That makes no sense. I have no problem with the idea of paying more to teleport over greater distances. That encourages people to go back to town, use a major portal to go to the closest city and waypoint out from there, but if it costs a lowbie 9c to port to a nearby waypoint, why does is cost a higher level character 4s? That doesn’t make sense to me. I certainly hope that this system isn’t WAI.

Players like you can ignore such tiny fees, while people who play less and have less gold have to be more concerned with them. If the cost to waypoint was 1% of your cash, then you’d be on our side.

Actually, no I would not. I understand the necessity for a gold sink in MMOs. I think what people are forgetting is that way points are completely optional. If you don’t want to pay, you absolutely do not have to pay. You are more than welcome to run from point A to point B.

You pay for convenience.

I gave solutions on how you could:
-Help out your friends without worrying about spending money
-How to get money by doing the events between way points

What reason do you have to believe that it’s a necessary gold sink? GW1 did not have this gold sink. They displaced it from vanity sinks like 15k armors into waypointing.

This is a fundamental flaw by design. A game designer’s philosophy when designing anything like this is to never hinder a player’s enjoyment of the game by actually playing the game. One example is games that have very high repair costs. Yes repair costs are one form of gold sink, but incredibly high costs and even worse – needing repair even without dying, by just walking around, makes the game much less enjoyable.

So no, you can’t just use “gold sink” as a blanket justification for something. There are good ways to design gold sinks without sapping the enjoyment of the game out of a player.

And no, you are not playing smart by not waypointing. Just because someone waypointed somewhere doesn’t mean he’s twiddling his thumbs at that waypoint while you do stuff along the way. He’s now moving on to other content, exploring new areas (by definition you aren’t exploring if you’re just backtracking content you’ve already done trying to get to a waypoint) and quite frankly he’s much more efficient than you are despite what you may think about yourself being so “smart”.

Hahha, really.. You just compared a lobby based game to an MMO? >_> There is a huge difference my friend.

And you are aware that there are more than just single events in specific areas correct? I highly doubt you are going to catch every single event your first time walking to the waypoint, then utilizing that way point back and forth each time. You’re missing out on loads of content.

But hey, play how you want to play. Just don’t come crying in the forums when you are broke and can’t afford things because you skipped tons of events while leveling.

Skipped tons of events while leveling? Oh, no, I don’t even think so. Not everyone farms gold, and you can’t honestly tell me that someone with 80-100 gold right now isn’t farming gold. Come on, now. When the majority of people commenting are all in agreement, the very few who can’t see past their nose (typical) are the ones in the wrong here. It’s so typical: Well this isn’t affecting ME, so I can’t understand how it could be a big deal for other people!!! Be less bad!!! Repeatedly doing DE chains doesn’t make you a better player; it makes you a gold farming zerg bot.

WP cost is too high compared to the gold given out for DE. Plain and simple. Espcially combined with a repair cost now and then. Because one person has 1 jillion gold doesn’t make this any less true.

The precautions against gold selling seem a bit over the top here. Don’t give people a lot of gold, and they won’t be able to sell it!!! Except they are. Except gold farms exist in game.

For what in-world reason do they cost anything at all? The ones from the mists to LA are free. From LA to cities and back are free. I just don’t get it. Now, I get the ‘gold sink’ aspect, but that’s real life intruding on the game.

It doesn’t sound like you get “gold sinks” at all. They have nothing to do with real life. They are there to keep the in-game economy in check. If you want the luxury of instant travel you pay for it. This is one of the better gold sinks you can have in an mmo, purely optional.

It should be based on distance, not level. What, am I getting fatter as I level, and it costs the Asurans more to transport me? It doesn’t even make sense to me. At least distance-based costs make sense to me lore-wise. I am not making a whole lot more money with events and selling gear now that I am 80, but it costs me much, much more to travel then it used to.

I agree with most opinions here, waypoints are way too expensive. Sure, you aren’t meant to jump everywhere while not caring about your surroundings, but level scaled costs are too much.

Some suggestions for fixing this, besides distance-based costs:

  • Discounts/overcharge based on how times you used waypoints in a certain time. Keep using every 10 minutes and you’ll soon pay 10s for the nearest waypoint, but if you use once an hour or 2, you’ll pay just a few cooper, even at lvl 80. Of course, the price doesn’t go up for ressing.
  • A “master waypoint” for every map, which you can use for free if you are on another master waypoint. Using them from the map would have the usual cost.

I agree this is a problem, and not just for playing with friends.

It affects any high level who returns to a low level zone: the loot in the zone is nowhere close to what is needed to pay for the in-zone waypoints.

Either scale up the loot, or reduce the waypoint charges. Otherwise, the whole efficacy of sidekicking is undermined.

Costs are to high. If they are going to do it based on level how about flat rates per level

1-80 bronze you pay the same as your level to travel any place on the map.
Resurrections should be triple that. A level 80 self res would cost 2.4 silver where a level 10 would be 30 bronze.

There should be some sort of penalty for a death.

They need to adjust the rewards of the high level DEs. Why should we bother doing a Lv80 DE that is not only much harder, but with the lack of people it takes more time to finish and the rewards are just like 30 copper and 200 karma more than one in the starting areas?
