tldr:
-Wurm encounter is on par with teq and needs coordination
-Marrioniette has a lower-skill requirement and is more casual
-There is a 3rd major portion to this release that is unannounced and must be found by players.
____

“The Jungle Wurm encounter is sort of on par with the level of coordination, gameplay and skill that Tecoatl required. It’s kind of our next giant, open-world mega-encounter where hundreds of people come together and try to overcome. Because of that difficulty, it’s got some pretty awesome and unique rewards on it [like] unique minis you can only get from the Jungle Wurm. There’s a new sub-set of weapon skins, and there’s a lot of really awesome rewards that come off of him compared to other bosses in the world.”

“The Marionette encounter is much more casual, more approachable. It’s a ton of players coming together to battle, but the amount of skill and coordination is much lower. We want people to go there, have fun, experience the story more than anything, and a lot of the rewards you get from the Marionette actually help you progress the story.”

“During our chat, Johanson told us that in addition to the two new mega-monsters, there’s a third part to The Origins of Madness that players will have to seek out on their own. His reference to the Marionette rewards relates to this, since it provides players with important clues regarding Scarlet’s past and current plans. “Players are going to be able to go to a location for the first time where some of the pieces of the puzzle of Scarlet’s story will be put together. This release gives [players] a component of seeing how she got to this place.”

Interview 2 of 3

tldr:
-Marrionette is temporary but will be here until it no longer fits with the LS (+2 weeks)
-Cannot board it
-Siege will be used to fight it, but it’s pre-built
-Players can build routes to funnel enemies (maybe kind of like Tower defense?)
-Boss timer for both will be mutually exclusive (but might spawn at same time as Teq)

I’m sad that they decided to make another Teq scale encounter. I thought they would have learned to make it scale more by this point. If they aren’t going to merge servers and increase zone caps then the bosses need to scale starting at 20 players, not 100.

Skill and coordination in the open world = bad.
Skill and coordination in instances and guild sized events = good.

It really isn’t that hard of a concept.

To be honest, teq is not that hard. Players refusing to work together and utilize strategies is the issue when dealing with teq. Every server should have the capability of defeating him on reset.

If you do not want to do teq/wurm, then fine. There are plenty of less-challenging bosses out there that you can do. But for those that want challenging content and are willing to put the time and effort, we have our opportunities.

Still, they remain confident that taking chances and collaborating with the community will make Guild Wars 2 the MMO players have always wished for. I guess we’ll see. Either way, this Tuesday ArenaNet rolls the dice on its four-part Living World finale starting with The Origins of Madness; they won’t know until it’s over whether that gamble truly pays off.

100% w/o question they need to work more on rewards for this to happen, above and beyond the LS. Until they fix rewards it will simply not happen. This has been the same for the life of this game and will not start to change until acceptance of it occurs.

From Interview:
“I think the biggest thing that gets me excited is when I go in game, and I see people talking about [the story] everywhere. When we get to the point where the core audience of the game is all talking about it in game, that’s when we’ve really succeeded.”

I would like to know which server Mr.Johanson plays on, because I like the story so far but I am also having a hard time finding people to discuss it with, let alone discussing it everywhere, or openly in map chat. I would like to guest to that server everyday if possible to see people’s theories about Scarlet.

My current favourite theory is that Sylvari are all minions of Mordremoth, given that they share the same dream(just like Destroyers are all of one mind, which was explained back in GW1) and cannot be corrupted by other Dragons because they arent allowed to steal each others’ minions. They could also simply all be minions of the Pale Tree just like the Stone Dwarves are minions of the Great Dwarf.

Wow .. so they really will do the same nonsense again and clear Bloodtide Coast from players the same way they did with Sparkfly Fens ?

Do they just ignore everything thats written here on the forums or simply don’t care to turn maps to ghost towns on most servers ?

Players who have been unsuccessful in defeating Tequatl will know the dangers that defeat brings to the area. We asked if these new bosses would also cause the environment to be more dangerous after a defeat. The answer was yes. The Marionette’s is more immediate, with everyone in Lornar’s Pass being instantly killed by the boss’s Aether-cannons. On the other hand, the Wurm has a lasting effect much like Tequatl’s. Instead of exploding fish heads however, one of the three Wurms will randomly pop-up and use their signature move on players traveling across the map.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

I’m glad that the Wurm will be as challenging as Tequalt, its always a fun World Boss to fight.

But its sad that these interview were bias as hell. These come from the interviewer not Colin.

1) ‘’Without question, Scarlet’s a compelling character, … ‘’ Really?? Because i have a lot of question about that.
2) ’’Since its inception, story has been a critical component of Guild Wars 2.‘’ Really? Because i feel like a lot of people find the Personal Story boring, Traherne one of the worst character and the Living Story … Well you know. GW2 have a lot of strong point, but story ain’t one of them.

This is the single not positive sentence of the interview : ‘’Despite Johanson’s enthusiasm, the ArenaNet team’s Living World efforts have thus far met with mixed success and mixed reactions.‘’ I suppose the author had a bit of shame at the end of his paper. Don’t get me wrong, i love the game and all. But I find way more healthy to talk honestly about the good and less good things in the game.

Overflows will always be in this game. If you had a choice between intense server lag amongst 500 players, or moderate graphics lag amongst 150 players, its safe to say 99% of people will choose the latter. With intense server lag, no one can get skills off, no one can move, and with a complicated boss encounter, you will fail miserably. There is no other way around it. Overflows are the best possible solution until there are advanced in networking.

The best I can suggest is to do map exploration while you wait, or at the very least do gathering runs.

I really wish they would stop hurting zones to create mega bosses. These kind of fights need to be instanced for people that want raiding rather than causing a zone to be lag filled and overflowed every couple of hours. Just my opinion, but it looks like it might be a worthwhile update otherwise. I know you aren’t one to usually make kittenumptions Vol, but I think you are seriously underestimating how casual low pop servers have become. For reference: the Queensdale Champ Train on Devona’s Rest peaks at 20ish players (30 on a good day).

That’s right… the mind-numbingly easy content with decent reward can only pull 20 players. Content that requires coordination and has a low pay off such as Teq doesn’t even get attempted on low pop servers.

They really should find a way to transfer guilds so that they can begin merging some of these ghost towns, especially if they are going to start adding content that requires people to participate.

There is nothing challenging about Teq himself. The “challenge” is having to stand in one zone for 2 hours in order to get a spot, or to fail because there are too many trolls or afk people.

I have no problem with challenging content, but the only reason the content is challenging is because of the lag and how stupid most players are.

What I want is a fight that takes actual coordination with interesting mechanics where we can show up on our own schedule, figure out the fight and not fail due to level 40’s in blues who want to see the fight but won’t listen to directions or come back from being afk.

I have to schedule more time to wait to fight teq than it took me to complete entire raids in WoW.

Page loaded a second time for me

On Friday I got to sit down in a Skype call with the guys at ArenaNet who showed us the new Twisted Marionette and The Great Jungle Wurm. I watched as they played through the content for the first time in the form it was going to come to us. I didn’t get all the fine details of the fights, but I did get information to get us all well prepared for these new world Bosses.

The Twisted Marionette makes it’s appearance known in Lornar’s Pass via a massive ship that portals it in to an area where players will have to fight tooth and nail to get to it. Not only for the reason that the Marionette is directly tied up with Scarlet and some fine details about her; but, if players do not stop this construct before it builds enough power? Every single person in Lornar’s Pass will get killed by an awesomely huge cannon. No pressure.

Luckily this Boss isn’t made to be as difficult as Tequatl or The Great Jungle Wurm, and I was told it could even be handled by a random group of players in overflows if need be. This will make it easier to get the exclusive loot tied with this boss, get some type of unique Fragment that players will want and get just a bit more details on Scarlet and her plans. Coordination and effort is still key, but I am thinking it won’t quite require the same amount of pre-planning needed like that of Tequatl. This is especially the case considering the Twister Marionette will not be a permanent addition to the game (unless it comes to the Fractals).

About the fight itself? Well it’s going to be a two-phase combat that will split players up five different ways.

In the (amazing) paint picture above you will see how the fight goes. Players will be split up and forced to go down the five paths that will lead them an energy generator and – initially – a large red portal. Players will have to take over the ground around the generator and portal, then defend it against all of Scarlet’s minions in order to get the portal to charge. This phase is where players can use things like arrow carts, catapults and things of that nature from WvW in order to protect their positions.

Throughout this fight minions will come to harass, or use siege equipment of their own or even aerial bombard players to get them away from the generators.

Once the generator has charged the portal, and it turns green, players will need to split up even further. Some players will have to head on to Phase two, while some have to stay behind to protect the portal to make sure they don’t get over-run and force players to retreat from Phase Two.

Here players are teleported to smaller circles where they must destroy unique Champion clockwork minions while the Marionette will be stomping upon players or attacking them. These minions are the only things stopping you from taking out the chains that keep the Marionette up. The interesting thing about these minions is that they imploy new tactics. For instance the one I got to see could not be damage at all from the front, and required one player to hold it’s attention while other’s attacked it from the sides or the back.

Players will be on a time limit to handle the Champion and power regulators in order to destroy the chains keeping the Marionette up.

Reward and Failure

Loot is handled just like Tequatl: all the reward comes at the end of the fight, and is dependent on how far you get within the fight. Each chain you break gives you a larger reward with the largest reward being tied to killing the Marionette. Destroying the Marionette may just reveal a bit more information about what is going on exactly, too!
Failure to stop the Marionette before the power meter associated with it is filled results in a massive cannon going off and every single player within Lornar’s Pass being killed. Even those possibly on the other side of the map.

The Great Jungle Wurm comes to Bloodtide Coast not through any master plan of Scarlet’s, but by pure happenstance due to Scarlet’s probes. Mayhaps we will discover more about these probes through this, but truly this is a new world boss that plans to stay and cause trouble for a long time. Here the main draw is the conquest, but do not think there are no consequences for failing to defeat this beast.

This boss is meant to be a lot more difficult and need a lot more coordination “like the coordination needed for World v World”. Players will gather around three Asuran brothers who will start an escort encounter for each of the brothers which will split a zerg into three groups that lead players to different heads of The Great Wurm. There is no information how well the three groups need to be communicating with each other, but certainly each group will need it’s own leader.

Each of the Asuran Brothers will lead the players down a different path on an escort mission that will require players to keep the Brothers alive. If one brother is dead for longer than an accumulated time of four minutes (meaning they can be ressed, but sparingly) the event chain will end. Each escort will need to reach it’s destination in order to spawn The Great Jungle Wurm, sort of like The Shatterer escort mission. The escorts take about five minutes to complete.

These escort missions are meant to show some key features of the fight with the Wurm ahead. Each Wurm has some characteristics in common, but also some unique features for each head. In the path shown to me players needed to help a Pirate and it was revealed that this particular Wurm head enjoyed swallowing powder kegs, for some reason. On top of this there were also egg sacks that lined the way that needed to be destroyed else they spawned tougher enemies.

Each head has two different phrases, as far as I understand. These fights have a focus on mobs to begin with, then a focus on the Wurm itself which allows players to build a bit more diversely for their preferences. I imagine good coordination will call for DPS-centric classes like Warrior and Thief to remain Berserker to handle mobs, while other classes could be called to go more Soldier so they can burn the Wurm itself a bit better.

In the Wurm fight I was shown players had to gather powder kegs from hostile pirates, and small jumping puzzles, while the Wurm was spitting eggs and other mobs. Upon getting the powder kegs you set them by the Wurm who will then consume it and blow up until it’s invulnerability shatters and players could burn it until it got back up for another round. It’s important to note these kegs are volatile and had a chance to explode when you were hit, and are going to explode after a certain time if you don’t get it to the Wurm in time. On top of this the kegs you can get change location every time the Wurm gets up from being attacked.

Reward and Failure

Like Teqautl and the Twisted Marionette, reward is based on how well everyone does in the fight. Likely the quality of the reward is directly related to how many of the heads are defeated. Reward, like Tequatl, is exclusive items that are themed to the boss.

Failure in any leg of the escort, or the fight itself, results in the Wurm being able to spawn anywhere over the map to attack players like some guerilla warrior. Otherwise the biggest result of failure is no reward!

copy pasted article. Sorry to anyone who didn’t want to read it, but I wanted those folks who couldn’t get to it to be able to

Failure to stop the Marionette before the power meter associated with it is filled results in a massive cannon going off and every single player within Lornar’s Pass being killed. Even those possibly on the other side of the map.

wtf

I hope you have run teq multiple times because there is no way an uncoordinated server will be able to just port in 2 minutes before the start and expect it to succeed.

First you need 6 competent turret gunners that know what they are doing. Then you need 2 separate defense groups that need to kite/lure spawn away from the cannons (as well as deal with tentacles that spawn on cannons). Then you need to allocate four different groups to spread out amongst the 3 batteries and megalaser.

You can’t possibly expect an unorganized zerg to allocate themselves accordingly.

Indeed. Although not sure how I feel about random arbitrary zone wide insta-death mechanics for people who have no interest in the boss fight. Especially on servers who don’t have the pop to do these fights.

The respawn itself wouldn’t necessarily be the issue, and I do like that there is a noticeable fail condition that affects the zone to help game immersion. But for some players who may either not be interested or for servers who do not have the organized population to do this event, getting insta killed in the middle of going for a skill point/ vista/ JP may be a bit too much.

I understand, but I don’t think the number of players being negatively affected by this will be too great. The zone is dead as is on most servers, and this only happens once every x hours, so it’s fine. Besides, if a new player sees all these commander tags and raging in the chat, he may be inclined to check it out.

Well that the thing its a game at the end of the day and games are not hard they are made to make you think you did something hard but at the same time able to be done. Do you realty think any game would put something out that you could not realistically beat? What would be the point of add in content that no one could beat its would be a waist of time and resources on the game makers side. Teq is about organization and reading info. (as all mmorpgs are you just look up the fight online about 2 days after its put out and you win) if you cant do that you will not beat him and most “hard” fights in mmorpgs.

Just want to say….Lornar’s Pass is one of the largest maps in the game, and it took me 10 hours to get through it on my first go in 2012. So, does a new player really have to deal with this Scarlet event up to 5 times (if it spawns every 2 hours), as well as any invasion events that pop up? Sounds like alot of uneeded deaths to me……

Or leave the game entirely. There’s a better solution than all or nothing.
