Glad your enjoying the game atm , it does have its good points . Wait until you get to the higher level areas in the game and your trying to achiev a skill point or a vista
on your own and the creators of this game put a Champion right next to it and there is no one around to help you . Then tell us how wonderful this game is .

Hey Balrog, glad you could join us.

First off, don’t listen to the forums as a new player. I’m one of these “Negative Nancy” people here, and even I’ll tell you to avoid the forums at first.

Secondly, you already have the best feature of this game. Friends. Friends make this game so much better, especially when you know those friends outside of GW2.

And lastly, enjoy yourself. Have fun playing a new game with your buds. Don’t get corrupted by the Forums of Orr yet, and just play the game and take your time. No need to rush. Learn stuff for yourself and with the help of your friends, and go explore what GW2 has to offer to you as a new player.

What you have to understand from the Forum Risen, is that we remember a different game than what you are playing now as a new player. So you’re not seeing what we saw when this game first came out. You’re seeing the game in the state it is now. You don’t have that jaded perspective that we all have from playing a different game awhile ago. Thus why I say, enjoy what the game is now and don’t listen to what it used to be, cause that doesn’t matter to a new player.

So welcome to GW2, and hope you have fun playing with your friends.

Why not ranger? Why no love or other classes besides the holy trinity.

Because the pet mechanics have been more or less broken for a year and there’s no indication that a good solution is on the horizon.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

I just picked this game up for $15.00 (deluxe kit)!
I played WoW for 8.5-9 years, then Swtor on and off for a few, so here I am. I have never tried GW games. I was a closed beta tester for BW specifically, for their Star Wars mmorpg(I tested 6 builds over a 5 month period). I guess with college and all the studying for my recent Certifications, I haven’t had ANY time to get into my games on Steam, or a new MMORPG for that matter.
Can we use add-ons in this game?
Anyway some starting tips would be great, I don’t know anyone who plays this game, so any advice would be kindly re-guarded.
Thanks
Sean

OP,

Glad you’re liking it. While there’s a lot of stuff to go through in this game, it’s important to branch out eventually and pick stuff you’re interested in as a lot of content in this game… can have YMMV pretty severely. Try to look up like minded people and guilds on your server (Although megaservers include everyone, it’s more likely to include your server mates).

Unfortunately, a lot of this game has become gated for characters before they reach 80, so I do recommend making it your main focus.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Ignore the spoiled players who can now see nothing but the faults of the game. GW2 is still the best MMO out there, even if there’s still room to improve.

This thread is over a year old, so there’s no real reason to address the OP . . .

But welcome to you, Sean.

Addons: Don’t. Until you really know what you’re doing and understand the ok-overlays that Overwolf provides vs. the pretty-much-everything-else-except-music-macros, don’t risk a ban. GW2 is dead set against mods that give a player any game play advantage. They’re fine with you using a gaming mouse, though, so long as one button press equals one game action.

Tips on the game itself: Check the sticky at the top of Players Helping Players titled something like “OMG If You Only Knew This” for lots of tips and tricks. Some may be outdated now but they will teach you a great deal of the game.

When you have a specific question about what something is or does, you can type /wiki (subject of question) in your chat window and your browser will open with that wiki page. E.g. /wiki minor rune of the citadel. You can also ask in map chat — and btw you can set up new tabs with a custom set of channels so your needed info doesn’t spam right out of sight.

Have fun! Explore! Don’t panic if combat feels difficult at first, once you get the hang of moving and dodging while firing off your skills (for me I had to get a Razer HEX to make that possible), you’ll get nicely engaged in the fights.
