Arrhhh worst question ever ;D
Well I think the main language of an International language should be English cause it’s the most spoken language in the world but I personally belive that if someone want to talk in their own language (even in map) they can, cause it’s international.
If they talk in their language that means it’s reserved to a certain type of people (for example on Fow we’ve got a LOT of italians speaking italian for creating groups etc), and mostly people talk their language cause they’re not so good to at english and stay in the International server cause they don’t have their own server. I’m on the International one and I usually see “Make a party and chat there”, well it’s not easy when you want to talk to ALL people that speak your language and it’s something important. True is the fact, lot of people talk in map about not so important thing, in many languages.

So my opinion is: TO ALL: English. But if you want to talk to your country-people, you must feel free to do it, obviously without spamming.

Excuse me, but how are they ruining your experience? This doesn’t make sense unless you are hyper sensitive about… something. If I see a language I dont understand in chat I simply ignore (not block) that sentence. How hard can that be? Also stop the not being polite nonsense. They like to write in their native language just as much as you do. You are over thinking it to much, since that person probably doesn’t even know you are there.

Around where I live just walking down the street I constantly hear people talking in languages I dont understand, it doesn’t bother me (well expect for the urge to learn their language so that I can understand them) or do I consider them rude.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people that do not accept other languages but theirs in Map chat. They blame others and, 20 mins later, you can easily see them chatting in their own language.
The fact is that, sometimes, they arrive to offend countries and people criticizing some difficult national situation. Well, it’s a game and read those thing gives me chills.

My comment was directed at English-speaking people to report other English-speakers for verbally abusing people who do not speak English. Everyone should be respectful to the rest of the community, regardless of what language they speak. Please be tolerant of people who do not speak the same language as you. Play and let other people play in peace. Again, on Worlds with no language tag, people may speak whatever they wish.

For the start, i’m Portuguese so @mariannitten, your arguement is invalid. I mean me and Keikat are portuguese and we had english in school…. I’m in the game and all i see is foreign language everywhere, not understanding anything from map chat i think it’s not polite, as i am not spamming the map chat in portuguese, because i respect other people and nationality. Not every1 speaks english? i think every kid that is 12+ years old (that’s what Guild wars 2 is rated) speaks basic english, basic enough to understand the game or even talk with other people….

I am Brazilian and I completely agree that keeping map chat clean from foreign languages is the polite thing to do. Map chat is really something people should use for talking to everyone, not just those who use a certain language. English really is the most efficient one at that. I really just speak Portuguese when I know that the ones I’m directing the message at will understand it. It makes no sense otherwise.

Now, aside of map chat, I really wouldn’t like people to tell me to use another language when it really doesn’t concern them. It makes no sense for someone to come dictating me to speak something else when I am on /say talking to a few friends in Portuguese.

What is the point of the servers with language tags if you can speak any language on any server? What’s with the special treatment? Is it because they have the option to change all text in-game to their language etc? Because there is clearly an option for English too. I want English servers.

I am sorry Miss Buenaobra, but I’m going to have to disagree with your opinion. GW2 is a game that, specially because of it’s Pay once and play for ever model, should have an official language for the general chat (in this case /m or /map). Even before the game was out (this includes the head-start) communities were already deciding on their own that certain servers would become these so called “Unnoficial” X language server. This resulted in a great deal of players of a specific language to flood these servers.

When me and my friends joined the game we decided to join a server, which common sense dictates, if it is not language tagged it will be of the default game language. Since we knew there would not be a specific server for our language, and we all know English to some degree , we decided to join the server we are currently located at.

At first the community showed a helpful and enjoyable environment, specifically in the /m chat across the several areas in which this chat is available. And then they came. The members of those communities that had decided on their own that this server we were now on was of X language started coming and suddenly the chat became flooded with sentences I had no idea what they meant. There were occasions in which we would even be told, should we speak in English in /m: “This is a [Language here] Server, so please speak [X].” I’m sorry WHAT? Oh but it goes on.
Should we try to argue with them about the language in the chat, 9 out of 10 times we would end up being called racists, Nazi’s even and other similes, and we would be so called for reasons that don’t even relate. Such as…and this is almost a direct quote:
“Why can’t you guys speak a language we can all understand in /m… geez”
“Wow, you are racist against non-English people shut up idiot.”
….I think I don’t need to tell you what followed after, I reported him and nothing happened. As with every report made by me and my friends-_-

But we continued to argue on, and we somewhat got support on both sides. But there are still a considerable number of people who refuse to accept it.

Those who accepted it were people who understand one thing that should be common sense to anyone play an MMO. When you speak in a global chat (or any chat that encompasses a whole area/zone for that matter) you are speaking to EVERYONE in said area/zone, and not to someone in specific or a certain group of individuals, but rather everyone. And to those that do not understand a a chat is considered Global, or in this case Area-Wide, when its reach goes beyond that of /s and /y and is see able by everyone, unlike /p and /g which are private chats.

You see the argument where not everyone understands English works both ways and is more relevant on the opposite side to that it is being used. Some people may not understand English BUT you can trust me when I say that there are a lot less people that understand you own language. You mustn’t forget that the English language is the most widespread language in the world and that most countries teach it in school from very early on (my own country for instance has started teaching it since grade 1 in recent years) not to mention that the language is used so much everywhere that you are due to end up picking up the language, or part of it, inevitably.

It’s not a mater of enforcing our preferred language upon anyone but rather of everyone using a language, in a chat where you speak with everyone, that everyone can understand. (cont.)

Language for International Servers

(cont.) If you really can’t understand English and still want to communicate in your original language why not do it in a guild of other people of your country that, even if they can’t help you, can more than likely use English to ask for you in /m. That is what a community is all about, helping each other. How ever, if you are so adamant of your opinion that /m should be a cluster-bomb of random talking, each in its own language, then may I suggest the following. The addition of a Channel system for the chat that will separate the /m chat in it’s default channel and in user created (or Gm-through request created) channels for each specific language the users want to use. And seeing as the tab system in the chat window already allows for filtering of certain channels in tabs, this should not be something hard to do.

Now, this is what I think, it is MY opinion. The same way you have yours I an entitled to my own regardless of me liking your opinion or not and Vice-Versa. In a totally biased way I still believe that my opinion of what language should be spoken in this specific chat is, is the correct one, and if not then the solution I suggested to be the most appropriate. This opinion will likely not be shared with you however, but it is still my opinion, it isn’t superior to anyone else’s nor is it inferior.

And to avoid confusion, I have nothing against people of different countries who speak different languages to my own. In fact the interaction with these people is something I really enjoy (specially in MMO’s) and that I encourage to all my friends and relatives. However it’s point fall to naught when we cannot understand one another. This interaction of different people and cultures is something I believe enriches oneself more than one single individual or religion, and contributes to a very good growth in maturity of a person, into being someone who is more aware of others who do not share the same nation(I am unsure in this term/word, unsure it explains what I am trying to transmit).

I leave here my opinion and will enjoy any CONSTRUCTIVE opinions and criticisms you may have but will disregard, and ask you do the same, any other type of comments made here with the intent of flaming or the inevitable trolling.

PS: Also returning to the example of the conversation in which I got called a racist. I followed his comment with a: “WOW, that doesn’t even relate to anything I have talked about so far, do you even know the meaning of the word?”
to which I got answered with: “Oh I’m sorry I cannot speak English very well, but if you want to continue this discussion in [X language]……”
. . . And yet you were able to call me a racist and tell me this right now with no apparent mistakes……that is just rude and disrepectful.

I can completely understand why people would want to find a server where the majority of people speak the same language they do, or at least one they’re fluent in. You lose a huge part of the point of a multiplayer game if you’re unable to communicate with other players.

I think this is a big part of the reason server transfers are free and unlimited right now – because during the betas a lot of people had problems where they picked a server at random and found themselves unable to understand the majority of players. This isn’t an ideal situation IMO but at least you can server hop until you find one where most people are speaking your language of choice (assuming enough GW2 players do speak it).

That said I also think everyone should be absolutely free to speak whatever language they want on any server. You just have to accept that if you choose to write in a language the majority of people aren’t using then the majority of people might well not understand you and won’t respond. But you shouldn’t be penalised for it.

Gray, thr problem here is simple, if people arent speaking german or french on a respectively flagged world, thats a breach in conduct for that said world and its -rules-.

However, what anet is saying here, is that, that rule is not valid for english.

Do you understand the difference mate?

On a DE/FR world, even if they dont always speak those languages, its implied as a rule that those are the languages to be used.

That, apperently, is not the case with non-marked worlds.

By default non marked worlds have a moderated rule of “speak preferebly english”. Im not forcing people to only speaking english, but without this rule, people will just do whatever they want without minimum respect. Because they CAN.

Im fine with guild recruitment, the occasional chat in swe/rus wtv. Im not fine, however, on having my realm spammed to death in every language other than english. Just cause they CAN.

Againg, don’t argue with kids. If someone said that to you, report them. Insults are not acceptable in any languange.
And if ANET did nothing with that, maybe wasn’t like that. They already show us the ZERO Tolerance in insulting.

If i found someone asking anithing in english, i answert in english. If i found someone asking in spanish, i respond in spanish. If i found some saying something in a languange that i don’t understand, i say nothing. It’s simple.
