Leather farming
I just noticed that the T6 stuff is wildly more expensive than the other T6 mats, which suggests a serious disparity between supply and demand.
No, it suggests only that demand for T6 leather is greater than its supply, when compared to the other mats. That might a “disparity,” but it’s not “serious” unless one can establish that there is a particular range of prices which is okay and another range which is not.
It wasn’t all that long ago that people sold T5 and T6 leather to the vendor, because it was a better price than you could get on the TP (or “better” including the trouble it was to list and wait). Not that many people complained because, well, hey, when you needed it, you could get all you wanted for roughly vendor value.
This doesn’t mean that ANet should not intervene; it just means that the issue is only urgent to people who suddenly noticed the difference because they want more in a hurry, which is exactly what the other posters were pointing out.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting lower prices for stuff you need and it’s all-too-human to be miffed when you missed out on the “good ol’ days”. But that — alone and without any other context — doesn’t mean that there’s a “serious disparity”; it just means that there’s a difference.
What happen is T6 went from having from over 5 million on the TP before HoT to 50,000 today. What ever the price is, it is where it needs to be to balance the current influx of new supply to the TP.
RIP City of Heroes
Yeah or just go farm it. Or don’t farm it and still get piles of it just playing/salvaging everything. Trying to “balance” the trading post is lol worthy.
Have you even tried farming it? It’s not effective at all. It’s painfully rare from salvage, regardless of the salvage kit. Loot bags aren’t much better.
ANet has even acknowledged the problem in this reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4plkkw/is_it_just_me_or_are_t6_leather_prices_insane/
But that’s really a better response than the quoted comment deserved, so feel free to ignore it and look at this one instead:
no ur lolworthy
Hold on a moment … I’ve reviewed that Reddit and I don’t see anything that should surprise anyone; it says Anet doesn’t like mats that aren’t stable in price and they act on that. That’s not really saying much though; we already know Anet acts on the markets where they see something they don’t like. JS also acknowledges the need for leveling characters to get value for the mats they collect as well, so if I had to guess, I would say that whatever happens, T6 leather is going to maintain some ‘expensive’ price relative to it’s vendor value when it wasn’t as widespread in recipes.
Regardless, I don’t see anything in that reddit that makes me think there will be a change to leather farming as we traditionally think about it so I wouldn’t read too much into what is being said there.

It seems like people are saying TP price reflects how easy it is/is not to get leather. They didn’t change its drop rate, they simply added more ways to use it, increasing its value from player to player. And don’t say increasing its use in armor crafting increased its value so heavily, people were swimming in leather stacks, now those stacks are gone. Well…except for people who are not doing guild hall upgrades…those people are swimming in leather stacks still…

Guild hall upgrades, precursors, all medium armor crafting, from basic to ascended…. Ever since Hoy, the amount of leather required of all but T1 level has exploded.
Elonian leather isn’t made of T6, but requires almost a stack of T5 that could have been transmuted to T6 otherwise.

People are saying that the TP reflects the current demand relative to the current supply, which partly includes how easy it is to obtain and how much is needed to create desired gear. So yeah, increasing its use in armor increases demand, which means people are willing to pay more, i.e. it increased in value.
I’m sure some people are “swimming in leather stacks still,” but that shows that they value those stacks more than the piles of gold they’d get selling it on the TP, i.e. (and again), it’s worth more to them now than it used to be.
I would make green/yellow sigils salvageable for T6 leather, using the Copper-Fed-SOM you have a 20% chance of getting one, so if the chance to get a T6 from salvaging a sigil was 50% or so, then the supply would be increased significantly, the huge amount of sigils lying on the TP would be bought up and people could gather these for themselves reliably through normal play. Would also allow people to salvage the sigils to get rid of them from their inventory on the fly and at the same time reduce the (minimal) coin entering the economy through vendoring them.
Either that or make Rare leather items over lvl76 guarantee a T6 leather.
…You can’t really ‘farm’ anything in this game, except the gold you need to buy the mats you want; it’s only when you get lucky that some of those mats come from your own ingame activity. That’s how this game is designed. From where I sit, it’s actually working as intended…
I disagree, I just finished farming everything needed for Incinerator and it took me about 120hrs. In doing so I discovered how absurdly easy it is to make gold in this game, so not only did I make a legendary without buying anything (except mystic coins and destroyer cores), but I also made the precursor and finished 400g on top by selling the stuff I got on the side.
