It is ridiculous that people give Anet a pass by blaming NCSoft, if your car broke down and Chevi would tell you, we would like to fix it, but GM wont let us. Would you give them a pass?.

NCsoft is Anet problem, not our.

Lots of comments about the dev team. Mostly unflattering.

Guys, it’s management, not the dev team, responsible for this.

Chances are the dev team know full well it’s going to be unpopular, but not getting fired, and not arguing with the company line in public are going to win every time.

It’s a well known dark pattern after all: http://evilbydesign.info/greed/money-to-tokens/

As for not commenting in here, well why would they publicly admit they were told to code this, unless they had to? :p

The nearest we’re likely to see to the dev team’s vision of the game was at launch. Since then it’s more about payback, profit, improving next year’s numbers.

The old exchange was extremely confusing, but this new system is still too confusing. Anet, please keep only one single option. My suggestion is to keep the highest one on each category (get gold = 250 option and get gems = 2,000 gems) only.

Also, pressing correct keys on keyboard while typing is super confusing. Can’t you please learn to read my mind, so I don’t get confused while typing?

Edit: I tried to buy gems with credit card, but suddenly it all became extremely confusing! I really don’t know what happened. Looks like I’m unable to buy gems, until you sort this confusing stuff out. Please.

I tried to buy other game’s currency with credit card, and it worked just fine; it wasn’t confusing at all. I’ll recommend that other game to my friends and family, because Guild Wars 2 is just too confusing.

Ok, guys. Some of you are unhappy about this change, I can see that. BUT… quite honestly, most of you are sort of (I hate to use the word) ranting (sorry!) instead of offering suggestions.

I assure you, the team leader told me not 15 minutes ago, they will listen to suggestions.

  • Does that mean you get everything you want? Probably not.
  • Does that mean you should suggest something? Yes, of course! Because they’re expecting player input.

So you want lower increments? Think it through and present a suggestion! You want XYZ in the interface? Post that idea. You would rather see something else? Post what you think about that other thing. Please don’t get into the whole “I’m going to kick the devs and their little dogs, too” because it’s not doing you or us any good at all.

I’m not here to apologize. I’m here to communicate and right now, the communication is coming in without a whole lot of substance. Over to you for suggestions and constructive input!

Here’s my suggestion: revert the whole system back to how it was. Let us choose how much gems we receive. I don’t want lower increments, it’s still not gonna fix the problem.

In other words, don’t go fixing something that’s not broken. (looking at you, trait and new player experience updates.)

I’m a new player, I logged in this morning excited to do my first Halloween and pick up a cool outfit. When I saw that the gem conversion system had changed and I couldn’t see an option to get the 700 gems I needed I checked the forums and found this thread. I’m upset by the change which seems like nothing more than an attempt to exploit customers and I’m very disappointed by the devs’ sarcastic and patronizing responses to the justified complaints.

I’ve had a lot of fun in GW2 but I don’t appreciate being exploited and treated like a fool. Maybe this isn’t the game for me.

Yeah something like this would be nice.
Idk why it doesnt quote your picture.

If it’s still too confusing then it could just show up later and not rightaway at level 1 for new players. But I really think it’s not confusing at all and also I don’t believe that the confusion caused is the reason of the change.

Change it back and stop wasting Dev time on things like this.

Its what they do.
We ask for precusor scav hunt or crafting. We get: Nothing.

We ask for open world content and overall DE reward system revamp. We get: Nothing.

We ask for dungeon revamp and some love to dungeons overall. We get: Nothing.

We ask for sPvP enhancements for this “esport” thing and more love to WvW. We get: Nothing.

We ask for a change in development focus from living story to expansion(I think the playerbase is splintered 50/50 here). We get: Nothing.

We ask for boss mechanics that are interesting and unique. We get: Nothing.

Need I go on? Typical of arenanet to push something like this onto us that we didnt ask for, and they KNOW will enrage us. They will wait out the storm until you all quiet down. While they encourage our feedback, this change isn’t going away.

The whole change is seriously limiting the available options. Even if I disregard all the cases where somebody might want to buy only 300 gems but is forced to buy 100 gems more (if he can afford them) I am left wondering if the devs never realized the glaring flaws regarding the new systems practical application.
I can only get discrete and even amounts of gems for probably odd amounts of gold. Also, I can only get discrete and even amounts of gems for real money.
At the same time I can get discrete amounts of gold for probably odd amounts of gems.
That way using the gem exchange becomes an exercise not unlike trying to hammer a square piece through a round hole.

Let’s say I want a bit of extra ingame cash. I buy 800 gems and get 100 gold for 733 gems. So, I am left with 67 gems. What to do now? My only option:
I get 1 gold for 9 gems.
I get 1 gold for 9 gems again.
I get 1 gold for 9 gems again.
I get 1 gold for 9 gems again.
I get 1 gold for 9 gems again.
I get 1 gold for 9 gems again.
I get 1 gold for 9 gems again.
And I am left with 4 gems that I can use for no purpose whatsoever.

Somehow I fail to see how this is better than just getting 800 gems worth of gold in one go.

I think that graph should be on the page itself but that is probably to confusing for some. But a button we smart people can push to get that vital information would do the job too.

Also sad how the gem to gold conversion is for oddball numbers like X gold for 769 gems, thereby guaranteeing weird leftover numbers that are effectively worthless. Even the people who do buy gems —> gold got (intentionally) screwed by this.

Gaile Gray, it’s pathetic to see that our criticisms will be ignored unless we have the knowhow to develop a monetary system in-game that will work for the entire player base. I may not know exactly how to re-code and create something that works for everyone, but I’m not stupid, and I can point out big problems when I see them. We all can. Pushing this off on the fact that, “Well, you haven’t given us suggestions” is, frankly, a load of bull. This is your job to fix, not ours. We are not whining, we are pointing out the exact reasons why this does not work. Furthermore, as seen countless times before, generally any time we DO give suggestions, they’re consistently ignored in favor of something the dev team came up with (or, you know, just flat out silence and two years of literally nothing), but if you’re so desperate, here’s a suggestion: stop screwing around with your player base. Yes, it may be management that’s in control of this, but the development team is the face of your business, and the players can see right through these cheap, moneygrubbing actions, and we’re not cool with it.

Signed,

There was, in my opinion nothing wrong with the old system. This makes it a greater inconvenience to those of us who might simply want something small, and do not need/want to spend a bulk transaction. I understand simplifying things, but to be honest, there comes a point you must take confidence in a person’s ability to read, comprehend and follow instructions, rather than making something so ‘simple’ that it takes away the ability of choice.

Thanks for reading, whatever the case.

Hey there,

Here are a few tidbits from the team:

  • A lot of newer players had trouble with the interface. That doesn’t apply to you, you’re veterans who have been around the conversion block a time or two. But newer players will benefit from the updated system.
  • The goal was to make the Gem Store more like other shopping experiences, and if you think about it, there is more of that feel to it now.
  • You may be surprised to know this (I know I was) but very few people bought gems at smaller denominations than the first one offered in the new system. That’s not to say they never did, nor that there wouldn’t be the desire to do so. But overall, the current options were selected based on player purchases in the past.
  • The team is going to listen to your feedback and, if and when it’s practical and desirable, they can look towards adjusting the new system to better meet your needs.

So please keep your thoughts coming on the new system. Feel free to make suggestions but please, keeping them constructive would be very much appreciated.

This is Anet postion.

NCSoft looked at the data and saw that the benefit to their bottom line for transactions that were less than 400 gems wasn’t worth keeping those transactions around. They don’t particularly care about upsetting the players who deal in amounts that are less than 400 gems because those players are a minority who aren’t contributing to profitability. They also don’t really care about Gold to Gem converters as those people aren’t spending cash. It’s a decision that I would probably also make in my own business (depending on the numbers).

The thing is, I’d like to know what portion of paying customers were making the small transactions. Like, considering the odd-ball gem costs on the Gem Store, it seems to me that the big Gold → Gem conversions would be people farming/flipping/etc. and then buying things with their gold, while the small conversions are some mix of people socking away a little at a time and people who want to round out the gems they bought with real money.

If we assume that the majority of players aren’t buying gems with real money, this would also account for why the majority of Gold → Gem conversions are for 400+ gems: only a minority needs the gems in small denominations (to round out their 800 gem increment purchases); the rest are buying gems in large chunks with gold.

I guess I’m just wondering if Anet has the ability to analyze the overall spending habits of people who convert, and if they bothered.

Of course.
Stupid change to a system that really didn’t need fixing comes along. We kitten and moan. Moderator calls us out can claims moral high ground because we, who didn’t see this coming, who didn’t ask for this, who didn’t expect this over the other bugs/fixes more urgently needed…

To the devs, (because I don’t really want to talk to a condescending mod right now) you need to revert back to previous system. If I already have x gems and needed just a snitch more to get something that tickled my fancy, why do I have to “waste” getting 400?

“Because you can save them for later”. How about I save my gold for later? Why can’t I do that? Just admit that you want players to spend more real money. This wasn’t to “simplify” the system.

“You don’t have X gold for the minimum 400 gems? You suck.”
Yes. I currently, after leveling 4 toons to 80 with full exotics, and all professions at 400+, am left with 60+ gold. Yes I don’t have the gold. Yes I suck. I do however, play at least 4 hours a day (I think), more than alot of folks can muster even for a mere weekend. I’d be interested to know how many have the (atm it’s 80+) gold to even consider buying 400 gems, of which they may not even use all of it.

“Anet needs people to spend money otherwise they can’t make money.”
If you’re sinking this low, I don’t even want to talk to you. The previous system didn’t stop people who wanted to SPEND WHAT THEY WANT you know, spend what they want did it? Judging by the stuff on sale in the TP I can only assume gems were being traded healthily enough. So no, not a good enough excuse.

Having slept a night over the gem exchange issue, I came now to the conclusion that I will not buy anything from the store as long as I cannot buy the exact amount of gems I need as it was possible before the update.

Previously, I occasionally bought 800 (Credit card) or 2000 (gem card) gems to buy something from the shop. Some time later, I restocked the leftover gems with ingame gold to buy a cheap thing with the leftovers when something interesting popped up like the magic carpet. Now I am forced to buy much more gems without any need. 400 gems? Such a huge amount of gems I would buy with real money only.

Since this is not what I will do (it angers me, to be honest), I will neither restock my leftover gems with gems bought with gold, nor will I buy gems with real money, because I am unable to restock the leftover gems. I hate it to have valuable leftovers laying around doing nothing.

Ok, after sleeping over it, I have this:

Positive things

  • Is good to see how we join together to express our collective opinion, at this point I think there is only one player defending this, both here and on reddit (the same person), but in general, we are together in this. I’m glad to see recurring names, people that I see on this forums trying to help, participating on CDIs, and giving positive feedback when asked. This shows that this is not mindless rage, this is we, making a stand here.
  • The solution to the problem in question, is simple, and has been posted several times in this thread. I dare any PR agent to say that we are not being constructive, we are both, being constructive, and expressing how we feel about this. They have no excuse on that.

Negative things

  • Were this just a bad design choice, I would understand that it can be solved by just giving feedback, but this isn’t. This involves other things.
  • Even if this is fixed, to not abuse us, is hard to trust them not to try something like this in the future. You have broken something that is very hard to fix, at least for me.
  • I don’t mean to sound exaggerated, or over-emotional, but like some others have said, Anet, you broke my heart with this…
  • As sad as it is for me…I don’t even want to read a post from Gaile again, at this point, I just hope…no other member of the team I liked gets involved in this, because I suspect that you will be commanded to defend this, but I rather you didn’t. If you can’t fix it, don’t partake in the treason this means. Really don’t want to see Colin or someone like that coming here to tell us how their metrics made them make this change…no more disappointment please.

Likewise, I will not be purchasing gems either, and I encourage everyone who has big issues with this new system to do the same. It is difficult, because in the past, I’ve enjoyed supporting this game. I like giving back to things I love, but preying on my wallet and giving me the excuse that it’s not my money they want, it’s to simplify it for “confused players” is an absolute black mark in my book.

Yeah why the f*** did they put the rates on 400,800,1200, etc?! This is a bad system and it forces us to spend more gems than we need! And we know how hard it is to farm gold and buy gems. Its not like gold just fall from a tree! If u invent this kind of system then think about players buying behaviours first! Dun just put these fixed numbers there which forced us to buy more gems only because we want the latest items! And please put a refresh button there. Guys, I think this may have been my fault. They asked for suggestions about the old Gold-to-Gem system, and I gave them these suggestions:

1) Make it hard to cut the cord. If you want to quit, but still have 50 gems left over, you either have to spend it or leave it behind. In order to spend it, you probably need to buy more. Either way, Anet makes more money out of you then they would have otherwise.

2) Make you spend money without buying anything. Unless a company is expecting to simply go out of business, the “gift card” method allows them to acquire money without providing any extra service. When you finally use your gift card, there are already more gift cards being sold.

3) Allow price fixing. Make it so they can fix prices without us ever noticing it. Remove conversion history. Completely, even through the API. No transparency or accountability at all.

4) Make real money worth more than gold. Make it so you can flexibly buy gold in any full-gold amount that you want. But if you want to buy gems? Ehh. What are they gonna do with gold? They don’t want it, you can keep it. It’s not like you worked hard for it. Even newbies can make gold, with all the confusions removed.

A step in a very bad direction and seems it is pushing people to actually buy gems (which it probably is.) I rather feel discontent with the new system and feel that the old system was way better. So either please revert to your old system of conversion or atleast add an option to buy a nonfixed amount of gems. I myself have already bought quite a few gems with real money but using this system to force me to do so really gets on my nerves. An ATM also gives you options to pick up either fixed amounts of money or other amount you want so doing the same here is probably a good idea.

There have been several posts about it throughout the thread. There’s a theory that the 400 gems minimum caused the currency exchange (prediction) system to go crazy because of all the useless gem overhead and to boost the rate.

Maybe 10 years from now you’ll be able to swipe your credit card and watch your character do everything for you instead of actually plaing the game, learning mechanics and getting better.

Ideally, the old system was fine as it was. You didn’t need to study the graph. Just input gold/gem amount, it gives you a forecast amount. Was simple enough for me.

My first reaction to reading about this topic was holding my sides to contain the laughter. You see, I knew this was going to happen. Too many people on the forums were bragging about how they convert gold to gems to buy things in the gemstore without spending a single real life penny. I mean, sheesh, if everybody does this, converting gold to gems, Anet will not not make any money.

Yes, the ability to do the converting is in the game, but, I think they meant people to buy gems with real life money as well as convert to gold.

So, in my saddened opinion, the very people who were on the forums gleefully posting about how they never pay for things in the gem store with real cash, are the very people responsible for Anet coming down kitten on the gold to gem conversion.

That said, If I understand the term correctly I am a whale.

I buy gems and munch from the Gem store using the gems I purchased.

I also convert leftover gems into gold, or save them for whatever else will comes into the Gemstore that catches my fancy.

This morning, after reading all the friction on the forums, I wanted to see for myself what was what in the converting of gems to gold…which is all the converting I do.

My reaction is add my name to the list of those wanting change.

I liked typing in the amount of gems I wanted to convert to gold.

In this new system there are tiers, so I cannot do what I used to do anymore

Careful Anet, in trying to get those with, err, “Thrifty Scottish Blood” among us to cough up more cash, you might be enraging the whales into quitting, and, those you want to keep.

If you guys need more income from the player base, let us know.

Hint, if you need funds for the development of expansions, new powers, new weapons, give your players the chance to help bring these ideas to fruitation.

I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I would gladly shell out a fair amount toward an expansion…or for the ability of my Guardians to use pistols

Anyways. These are my thoughts on the matter.

Lisa.

plausible, but considering the gem cutoff limit is conveniently just above and-or unequal with items in the gem store, plus no visibility on exactly how the gems are fluctuating, i’m sure anet had something up their sleeve.

Ideally, the old system was fine as it was. You didn’t need to study the graph. Just input gold/gem amount, it gives you a forecast amount. Was simple enough for me.

NO dont settle for anything,, its like always if you give anet 1 finger they take both your arms and legs

Refuse evrything till they changed it back!!!

It’s been a while since I posted here, but the last time I bought gems with gold, it was 200 gems, and that was very recently.

To be clear to Gaile and the team, going from being able to spend precisely the right amount, to having only very large increments (twice the size of the cost of a story episode!), which don’t match up with a lot of costs, is just not okay. It’s not something that ever should have happened.

The only acceptable fix is to bring back the full option to buy the right amount – too many of us have odd amounts of gems left over for otherwise, and your prices are too varied.

Welcome to the underside of the carpet guys.
“The death of one person is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic”. And we all know how much ArenaNet love statistics.

ArenaNet’s moderation policy means that when they make changes they know will anger the community, the act of bundling all related responses into one huge topic makes it easier to ignore.

Our individual responses no longer matter. We are now “the mob” and can be dismissed as such.

Please note that due to restrictions placed on my account, I am only allowed 1 post per hour.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.

Can someone explain to me how the refresh works?
I know the exchange rate changes every couple seconds.

Pre-patch, every time I keyin/change the gold amount, the gem amount would be refreshed.

However I notice in the new UI, the rate won’t refresh unless I go to another tab then go back to the exchange tab. Does it refresh/show when player actually press the buy button? Or else players could be paying more/less than desire. Can’t there be a real time/10s refresh so players know before pressing buy?

Also, why can’t we have both? They can retain the UI. But also make a custom amount button letting players go back to the old UI. This way everyone is happy. If Anet really think they are trying to help “new players”, not making people buy more gems than they want, this should be a valid change and a easy one.

For me, I always would buy the new items each week with real money then convert whatever was left over into gold to use since I work a lot and can’t farm for gold. Supported the game I loved with thousands of dollars spent and helped me keep up with gear/items I wanted. Now I’m stuck with having left over gems that can’t convert to gold directly since there isn’t an option that matches it. Only options are waste money and have random gems left I can’t use or stop spending my money. It’s an easy choice for me and means I can use the money elsewhere at the cost of a few less skins.

Perhaps we should be campaigning so that people DONT buy any gems with real money, until they rollback or adjust… see if their “metrics” then tell em something, since 21 pages of vocal en masse dissaproval in less than 12 hours won’t

The only way to do that is to do it in game. And people aren’t gonna go for it, with it being a holiday event and all.

My main issue is with points 2&3 but mostly 2. I have never once went shopping and paid more than I had to for my intended item. That position to me is saying people go to the store then purchase a $20 gift card to pay for my $15 item. If this was truly to simplify the gem store, pricing would offer incremental levels that exactly reflect item price/gem price. However, I’ve had enough marketing/sales experience to see their hands in this decision. Now people are forced to purchase more gems than needed creating a near constant imbalance of too many or too few gems.

I think this change is uncomfortable but not bad.
Ever since start we got constant inflation on market, by doing this more ingame money will be pulled out and hopefully prices will drop.

I agree with Pax. I’ve always wanted a way to manually select exact # of gems to buy as well as gold. I didn’t like the guessing game of pricing out the lowest cost of 1 gem, as you could offer a range of gold and still only get the same # of gems. If i need 46 gems because i have x gems left over from a previous purchase and the item i want costs x + 46, then i want 46 gems from exchange instead of being forced to buy the minimum 800 gems with cash. I would like to see a 400 gem option there as well.

Being forced to buy fixed amounts from the exchange isn’t fair and makes it useless because I use it to buy the odd # of gems needed to make up the difference between the remainder of the forced fixed # of gems from using real money and the odd # of gems of lower priced items and my next gem store purchase. You should have just changed or even better, added the option of specifying the amount you want instead of or in addition to the amount you are willing to trade. The fixed pricing is only OK for buying gems and only if you add a custom option. Otherwise it sucks. Also the 1 gold option isn’t the same exchange rate as the rest of the sell gems/buy gold choices (1 gold = 8 gems, the others exchange at ~6.8 gems per gold.) Going from gems to gold just doesn’t work fairly as you are rounding to a set # of gold coins instead of an exact gold, silver, and copper value.

If I want 100 gems I want 100 gems.

PLS remove this CRAP!

Edit: I want 4 things added:
1: I want the precise conversion rate added
2: I want to be able to choose the exact amount both in gems and gold.
3: I want the graph back
4: I want A-Net to treat me like an adult, being 40 yrs old I guess I’m entitled to it

and for all I care you keep the new screen for the ‘not so smart’, but I -HATE- it.

I’d managed to accumulate a fair amount of in-game gold and was going to buy some gems with it for skins…until I see that I’d have to buy 800 gems and the items cost 700. I don’t want/need to have leftovers and will just keep accumulating gold for now.

So, make the same thing that you’ve done for other UI trouble : restrict only new player, and allow older to choose how many gems they want.
Since a year, you seems to take care only to the new players :/

The only reason for this change is to STOP players from converting gold to gems, so that it would mean more players spending REAL MONEY to buy them. That’s it. That’s all. Disgusting business practice to slap players in the face, YET AGAIN (traits… that’s all I’m going to say). Then the ignore and ignore and ignore the backlash until we just give up.

My son’s boyfriend recently bought this game and I wish I could go back and tell him to save his money. To be sure I will never recommend it to anyone again.

I’ve had to log in and throw my feelings in to this discussion, my first post is one of general distress!

I don’t like this new system.
This isn’t an ‘oh no something NEW and DIFFERENT this can’t be a good thing’ reaction which I’ve initially responded to before playing through some of the previous tweaks, but I can’t get my head around this change to gem conversions.
I buy gems here and there when new things are released that I want, I don’t tend to spend them all in one lump and when I have a few laying around on my account and I see something else I want I just top them up rather than have to go through the hoops of buying another lump of gems. This completely takes away my ability to top up by maybe five gems, or even one or two here and there?
While I can appreciate that the conversions could be a bit confusing at first but really? It’s not that terrible to work out if you just sit and have a good look at it for a while?
We have managed just fine for the last couple of years without needing our hands held!

This change is so bad it actually hurts my eyes when I look at it.
But the funny thing is, they (ANET) act like children now: “Dont hit us we did it for the new players”. LOL
SHAMEFUL DISPLAY.
