Hi,

this was bothering me for a while, so I just wanted to share my findings. Then again, maybe I’m just stating the obvious. Let me know if I’m wrong.

What does Magic Find affect? Wiki says that MF affects only loot from killed enemies. It does not affect containers (champion bags, heavy moldy bags…) and chests.

This “chests” thing was confusing to me, because many champs leave a chest behind them. But these chests weren’t classic world or environmental chests. These chests were just an indicator that the champ left behind an exotic item. So how come when I looted that chest I didn’t get an exotic item? That’s because I looted a champ bag, which is an exotic item in itself, but its contents are often not.

Next, MF does kick in when killing a champ and it does affect the loot its corpse leaves behind, because you loot the champ, not its chest (because in many cases champs don’t have a classic fixed chest they guard). Remember that the chest the champ leaves behind is just an indicator of at least one dropped exotic item.

So, world bosses chests and other placed “environmental” chests aren’t affected by MF, and those champ chests are only an indicator of an already generated and ready-to-be-looted exotic item.

Hope I helped someone.

Umm the chest a champ leaves is to let you know you got a rare item or higher.

Follow the darkness into the depths, it’s more fun than the light can provide.

Loot from mobs is affected (but anti-farming DIminishing returns has a bigger affect once it kicks in). However, “pop-up” loot from world bosses is nt affected.

Containers (Champ bags, loot bags) are not Affected. The only exception are the Pvp reward track rewards, and even there only partially. (Many Pvp boxes reward normal champ bags, these champ bags are not affected by magic find, but there is a chance for bonus loot in addition to the champ bags that is affected by magic find).

World Chests and Jumping puzzle chests are not affected by magic find.

Lost Bandit Chests in the Silverwastes are partly affected. The champ bag that you get is not affected, but you have a chance to get extra bonus loot when you open one and this is affected. Ditto for Dry Top Chests.

#24 leaderboard rank North America.

The chest left by a champ (or other mob) will either be a wooden chest (rare) or steel chest (exotic). It could be the rare/exotic champ bag OR it could be a rare/exotic item.

The persistent chests in the world are not affected by MF, but the drops from mobs that is affected by Magic Find and only when you get a rare or exotic is when you’ll see those temporary chests. Confusing I’ll agree, but it’s a little comforting to know that my drop I might have to leave in wvw isnt’ a rare or exotic when I don’t see the chest there and it’s just a little loot bag. But at the time your loot is there on the ground, the item has been generated before you hit “F” (or whatever your auto loot button is).
