I think everyone is familiar with this issue and especially people from high pop servers like desolation are frustrated with it like i am.
I love major events not only for the loot, but for the whole experience and server hosting is ruining it for me.
We all know that if someone wants to do the event has to be in main because people in overflow prefer taxi to main than trying.
Hosting somewhere else myself is not good option for me cause i should not be forced to host for major events when i chose a high pop server in the first place.
I had a better thread coming for this and was typing while waiting for tequatl 50 mins before he spawns so i will be on my main, pc crashed while mid fight and lost both.
Here are my solutions:
1)Queue priority for main server people. (I also thought of auto kick host players when someone from the main server wants to join but it is kinda harsh and unfair)
2)No taxi to main for hosts. If you come from another server and want to do the event come early or try your best in overflow.
3)Raise the major event area population by 50-100 people.

Hosting is not an issue only for the main server people but for the people left behind on the server the player left because it forces them to host also. High servers become full with 3-4 overflows who try to squeeze a spot in main and low servers empty.
A soft-discourage on people who host to stay and do it on their server will make things better for the high servers and low.
If low population servers still have issues, then the hosting option is still there to help them do the event they like.
This way GW2 follows its’ philosophy of everything is for everyone, and high pop server people can do their events easier.

No, any change as you propose will grief others and make the freedom to do what you want and play with who you want violated.

The only real solution is to dismantle the entire server system and work with one massive server with layers for zones as they are needed. A layer is basicly an overflow, but more dynamic.

If you are participating in an event or eventchain you will always stay in your layer/overflow. If you are in ‘agro’ you will always stay on your layer. However, if you ar e not in an event and not in agro, you can be transported to another layer. this goes seamingless without any loadingscreen at all. If you party up with someone, you will automatically be placed in the same layer. party’s are always transported between layers at the same time.

This system would solve your issues, nothing of what you say would.

Your solution, while good, will never be done.
The way the system is now i cant do what i want with whom i want on my server.
The way the system is now people blindly fill the high pop famous servers to do events in expense of people like me who are forced to find other servers to do major events.
The system as it is now promotes luck and stupidity with people sitting in spawns clicking on party members/taxis to get to squeeze to main server rather than actually fighting.
If arena net did not want me to be able to event run on my server then why the hell they made servers? So i can transfer in between them? Then they should have went with your system from the start.
My solutions don’t hurt the game philosophy, everyone can still do everything with anyone they want. It just opens some options for the native people and requires the host people to make a little bit of planing if they have a group.
It doesn’t prevent people to host servers to open dungeons, it doesn’t prevent people to join other servers to run smaller events, it doesn’t prevent anything.
And, most importantly, it makes native guilds’ work a little easier to plan and organize event runs in a game that is called GUILD wars.
My solutions refer to the existing server system ofcourse, if i wanted to revamp it like you did then i would think something completely different, like you did.
