I was checking male faces yesterday and some of them look great like this new one

or this older one which is one of the popular ones with those beautiful wolf like sharp eyes

and then there’s the females

Females somehow can’t look “cool”. Mostly big round eyes that make them look borderline insane or cute. Even the deformed ones.. d-d Tried pretty much all of them.

I think one of the new female faces looks very serious, don’t mind the pink color in this picture.

I disagree. In this image, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 9 are all pretty intimidating and or/creepy to me.

However, I use #2 on mine, because I like the idea that sylvari are new to the world, so she looks at everything wide-eyed and innocent.

You guys I’m talking about cool not creepy and tbh I don’t even find those sparkly cute animu eyes creepy at all.
The only faces I’ve ever managed to work out something with by shrinking the eyes to minimum is 6 (which simply looks insane and not cool) and 8 which is cool but has really weird chin/jawline and bad coloration of lips and redness around the eyes which makes it look bad with cold colors. And the new ones look like baby faces with those cheeks and tender features.

Well, I suppose it’s just a matter of taste. I like most slyvari faces just fine, and managed to make three very different looking ones. My thief looks decidedly mischievous, not cute. My ranger looks a little serious, and my mesmer has a nice perpetual smirk that I like very much.

These are just base faces, after all. If you want something more unique, you pretty much have to use the sliders. It usually takes a while, but I have yet to see a face I couldn’t work with.

Personally, I’m more miffed that my asura ladies don’t have access to the scarred face from the patch. Would be great for my necro or guardian, but no, dude only. Same with the dreadlock hair. Why does that even matter, we’re talking about a race where there is virtually no visual distinction between male and female. Not cool. I want my grisly-looking, hammer-swinging SPAM of death

PSA: The amount of small felines serves as an indicator for just how angry I am at something.

They all look female to me, nothing cool about that. I haven’t made a Sylvari yet, do any of the male faces actually look male? Those all remind me of the effeminate males that is highly popular in anime.

Hey there I was just about to talk about this issue now and I am glad I found a post about it already created!

Honestly, I run a sylvari female, and from ALL the new faces added to the kits I could only manage to use one of them, achieving a close to realistic look. I totally believe connotations like cool, creepy or any other alike aren’t the issue, the thing is that oversized eyes do not allow players to create a relatively realistic look on their sylvaries… And yes now you can turn to me and say the two most obvious things:
“1 use the sliders” – as mentioned above, it does not diminish the eyes enough for them to look realistic in therms of proportion!
“2 role a human if u want to be realistic” – and to this I answer"no way" .

Solving this issue might not be as simple to solve as a non modeling person like me would think, and I respect that, but honestly rather than solving the issues they can be avoided…all the faces on the vanilla character creation have eyes plausible to be enhanced to look like cute eyes or reduced to look like something a bit more realistic at some point! My question goes to why was it not an option to model the new faces the same way, allowing players to choose whatever look they wish?? It would only take the eyeballs to be smaller as a template, and then allow players to enhance or reduce them through sliders…right now you can not tell me that is what’s happening because as I move my slider the eyes go from enormous to very big and that’s it…

So ya, as much as I like the ideas around the new faces created I cannot use any of them because my character will look like a lunatic possessed plant…and what saddens me the most at some point is how this is only happening with females, which is my main sylvarie genre… Please just enhance the amount of size diminished through the sliders! XD or use this feedback when creating the next faces!

You want to talk about sliders? try using them on the noses of the new male charrfaces or the Rox-face eyes, they could double the effectivness of those sliders and it stlill wouldn’t be enough ID

You can make female eyes… “less open” (um, more closed?) at the settings. I don’t know how to say, my English is crap. But anyway, I main a female Sylvari and I’m happy with the faces, especially the ones we got yesterday.

Some of the female faces working with the sliders can be a bit tricky. For example, I found the 2nd female face in Vienna’s picture to be the best for my Sylvari but I did not like the huge wide eyes. Messing with the sliders I tilted the eyes and set it to min widness and now they are significantly less wide. Looks more asian-like now I guess though.

Some of the other faces I’ve found it tricky as well. But there is some decent faces to start as a pallet for a less doey-eyed Sylvari. One of the newer ones in particular I feel is a nice base but I haven’t messed with the sliders or anything for it.

Every face on all races seem to have limitations on how much a slider will actually make a difference. For example, some faces changing the noses or something will not be as effective as others. That may be partly to prevent ridiculous morphs for some reason, or just limitations of the system entirely. Or I’m just bad with sliders. :P

Female Sylvari idle animations have a tendancy to widen eyes to begin with I think. So personally I found making the eyelids smaller made it look less huge when the animation plays through.

Of course beauty is always in the eye of the beholder so they say.

Attached a screenshot of my Sylvari for the sake of helping explain my example. I’m also terrible at screenshots so.

I really like the third option of the female sylvari faces that were added yesterday. It allows for a sort of mischievous trickster look without looking evil. This set is a nice change in comparison to the sweet looks of the previous batch.

I haven’t played around with the male faces too much yet. My ultimate favourite is still the third sylvari male face from this set! http://dulfy.net/2014/05/20/gw2-new-makeover-kit-faces-with-festival-of-four-winds/

I had no problem with the eyes. Here’s my first sylvari (these are the best shots I have of her face without going in game to get a new one). I used the sliders to go for a pointy branchy wooden look, like a tree spirit rather than a flower spirit.

Why are people talking about realism? I mean, how many walking, talking, and sentient plants have you seen to know that the big eyes are not realistic? lol

Nah. The first one especially is great, and very well timed.

I like how well they look with blue skin (cuz most of the default faces look horrible with it cuz of the permapurple). What I don’t like though is how hard it is to change the expression. :x
I like the “star face” one but I can’t seem to make him not look angry or sad. XD I want my Revenant to be blue so may use one of them.
