Going full berserker’s is going glass cannon, and you cannot blame the game for “being too hard” when you set yourself up like that, everyone loves pumping out max damage but if you can’t handle it, don’t do it. There are lots of viable gear alternatives for a damage focused role that won’t end with you getting 1 shot from everything.

Because toughness mitigates damage so poorly in this game, many end-game foes will one-shot you regardless of how much toughness you have. This is why damage-centric builds are the most popular in the game: burn them down before they get the chance to one-shot you.

That is not why it is called a ranger …

Exactly… The classical “ranger” is a skirmisher adept in guerrilla warfare.

There are a significant amount of bosses, events and champions in this game where going into Melee range is suicide, counter productive and offers ZERO advantage but PLENTY of disadvantages.

It isn’t fair, it isn’t right and it does not respect the rule of RISK vs REWARD. Going into melee should be worth the risks and a viable option far more often than
ranged.

There needs to be more bosses & champions who block projectile attacks or punisher players for using them to balance out the fact there are bosses where melee is a MASSIVE disadvantage with no rewards.

Toughness works fine, it’s not just needed.

Sucky thing is bosses that reflect projectiles often hit the melee character who’s in the path of the projectile rather than the user :b So they keep plinking away while I take their shots to the face going “wth is hitting me?”

That said, there are range only attacks, like for example Lupi. Spider Queen in AC used to have a nasty attack that was range only promoting meleeing… people cried and now it hits everyone :b because apparently meleeing and not being hit by range only attacks was an exploit. People in this game can be quite funny sometimes.

Meh, too much to read here, all looked to be saying about the same thing.

Is it not a choice to equip melee in both slots? So why complain? Isn’t that like saying I really love my level 10 armor but man I wish I’d quit getting hit so hard.

It’s all about choices. Glass cannon, lotsa damage, not so much defense. Tanky, not so much offense. All about choices.

I’m surprised noone has jumped on you about learning to play yet.

GW2 is melee unfriendly. You can melee and it’s powerful but it’s not something you do generally. The game was design as kite and kill.

You can do it but at a large disadvantage relative to range. Even on a guardian, the wimpy sceptre is a more effective playstyle than going into melee; particularly vs bosses/champs.

What game are you playing?

Have you heard of the stacking meta everybody complains about?

By being mele you get:

Group buffs
Quick rez if you get downed
Group blocks and protection
Area heals
A ton more damage

All this at the cost of having to know when to dodge.

By being ranged you get:

Lower damage, so longer fights and increased chance to screw up
No group buffs, blocks, heals, protection
No one can rez you if you fail at surviving
Usually no cleave

The only advantage is that volleys that come from far away are easier to see and dodge.

You are sure the game is melee unfriendly?

The disadvantage of ranged weapon is getting your head bashed in by mobile melee weapons because they do more damage.

If you use 2 sets of high mobility melee weapons, you will beat dual ranged setups in a lot of situations. For example Sword/Shield+ GS on Warriors has like 4 gap closers.

and the priestess of lyssa during the temple event reflects projectiles. many of the mobs in the solid ocean fractal also reflect. hotw p1 boss reflects. boss of cliffside fractal reflects.

I believe the first big wurm in TA also targets ranged enemies with the massive piles of AoE versus the easily avoided PBAoE for melee.

Because bosses deal out ridiculous amounts of damage in melee, any player who chooses to go all melee (i.e. equipping both weapon sets – warrior, guardian) AND wears heavy armor should receive less damage while in melee range only. Justification: these classes are close-quarters specialists and should be encouraged to melee.

Engagement range has absolutely nothing to do with armor class/weight.

The game is balanced around the fact that melee weapon have 2-3 times as much dps as ranged weapons because they are a higher risk.

That is your reward for going melee, insane dps that no ranged weapon will ever achieve.

I wouldn’t worry about balance for PvE, people just need to give up on that…

But there is some validity to this in PvP.

Ranger for example can do better aoe damage with either bow, or mainhand axe (also ranged) than it can with sword or GS.

I think ranged weapons should have their AOE severely reduced. Single target damage is fine, but AOE should belong to melee.

There’s nothing really forcing you to play ranged, except repeated defeats. If you’re happy to do that, then by all means use melee only. Even back in GW1, all melee players used a bow to pull aggro.

Agreed… My proposal has nothing to do with armor weight per se, but a profession’s inherent skills. Warriors, guardians and revenants are CQB specialists and should receive a reduction on incoming damage ONLY if both weapon slots have melee weapons AND they are in melee range. I’m not at all proposing a faceroll system, but one that is balanced. Currently, I feel the system is not at all balanced and wholly unforgiving for those of us who want to go full-time melee.
