You sure it isn’t some sort of visual bug? I’m not ingame to test it out, but there is no notation regarding such a change in the forum:

I’ve tried AoE near 5 people, although yes it’s completely random and rarely works how I plan it to, it never goes past 2 targets, personally.
It surely still does. Just test it on some huge boss and you’ll see the hits bouncing in your combatlog.
wouldn’t surprise me if they nerf Ele and allow thieves to stay where they are… I don’t see ele spamming dragon’s tooth or meteor repeatedly for 6 – 8k damage cluster bombs. Or piercing rifle shot on warriors who can hit upwards of 20k. Saddest part is the nerf to AoE is all because of sPvP. “it’s to powerful” Bleh. 5 Target limit is already sad enough to even be called an AoE…. Should be called a “zerg back scratcher”
LOL
Ele is the only class able to handle multiple ppl with ease. Best AoE, highest mobility, great CC, and can heal up like crazy. Zerg back scratcher? Don’t make me laugh. They’re easily the strongest class in WvW right now.

That’s because it’s just one enemy. You will never hit more than two targets at a time with meteor anymore even if there’s like 10 enemies under it.

AoE DPS should always be weaker than single target DPS. If you count all the damage a single AoE do to 5 targets you could get more than 20K of damage. if you see a warrior doing kill shots for that amount of damage he wont be doing anything else.
Eles can use dragon’s tooth or meteor for a big amount of AoE damage and then switch to other attunements and keep doing damage while being away from the target.
There must be a balance with damage and risk taken.
Dragon’s tooth and Meteor are two very different AoE mechanics. You stand under the tooth, you will definitely get hit, compared to you standing under the meteor and you might not get hit. Unless your hitbox is as big as the meteor’s AoE, which in that case is a very huge bug.

Didn’t they nerf cluster bombs? I run full berserker gear and they only crit for 3-4k now.
Hmmmm. Meteor Shower from the original game was also notoriously unwieldy from what I recall. It usually couldn’t hit other players if they were awake, because each falling meteor was telegraphed before it hit with enough time to dodge. (By walking away from the marker.)
I really wonder if this is a problem with “random hit location” more. Also, I need to do an elementalist at some point

It took ages to cast and cost a load of energy but when it hit it was very effective. This was mainly due to the 3 AoE knockdowns that came with the meteors. Without the rooting mechanic the gw2 version is just random and ineffective.
if this is the same for pve and its done on purpose i really can begin to fear even more any “balancing patch by Anet”.
Either way it need a fast fix asap……staff was already unviable but if that is true it becomes a joke.
And to be noted the random thief player complaining about mobility of staff eles …….the most static profession in all the game.
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
I just tested this, thinking the OP was being delusional or something, and I found sorta funny to cast a Meteor Shower against a single Risen Corruptor and he didn’t got hit not even once…
A few more tests and I’d say the regular hits are between 0~3 against a single target, with the target right in the middle of the area.
I don’t know how the targeting with this works, but I noticed that some Meteors fall right in the head of the target and they don’t damage at all, maybe it’s unrelated to the animation?
I can’t say much since I don’t play my Elementalist extensively since launch, so I don’t know about changes and stuff, but when I was leveling with Staff (my main weapon of choice for all levels) I remember using Meteor Shower even against single targets because I thought it was efficient to do so.
If this was actually a change… really funny.
Soon someone might come with the “how-to DpS” like WoW had: Between one to three enemies, Fireball, if they don’t move and will take at least 3 hits from Lava Font, cast it, otherwise it’s a loss of DpS, if there are only 10 or more you cast Meteor Shower, otherwise it’s a DpS loss – and something along these lines…
My meteor shower has always had a high chance to miss any particular target. It’s more of an anti zerg/zone denial ability than anything, and has been since launch.
I don’t use meteor shower. It’s very rarely the effort. Hardly ever hits anything and when it does, the damage is hardly breathtaking.
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
Meteor shower, since the very beginning of the public betas, has been very inconsistent with it’s random meteor drops everywhere. I would really like some consistency from it to make it worth using in small fights (1-3 enemies) too.
