People like you make me laugh and cause my brain to hurt thinking about what’s going through your mind, sorry, but seriously?

Waypoints are a better way of exploring the world because it takes you there instantly, Wtf? How can that even be possible. So, me spending 5 mins running through orr thinking “Oh wow that looks epic over there, i’ll head there now” is exploring the game less then me saying “I just spend 2s to travel here instantly and everything that is between that waypoint and this waypoint, was just skipped. So sorry anet, but I just missed that beautiful view you created, I just skipped past that amazing event you spent hours creating and testing, but hey it’s okay because I get to explore your loading screens, just not your maps.”

Anet say they can go back and add more events, well you have to find the events first, how are you going to manage that when you’re waypointing everywhere through the game? Will the loading screen tell me there is a new event in a hidden part of the map that no waypoint will take me near? No, I didn’t think so, but atleast if I have to run past that area on foot, or on a mount I will have a much greater chance of exploring that area.

Part of your comment was "When I explore in GW2, it’s more like, “What’s over there? I’m going to find out!” It’s not about the destination in GW2; it’s the journey. " So tell me, when am I suppose to think “Hey what’s over there”? When i’m on the loading screen? When i’m opening my map to select the waypoint I want to travel to? Maybe after i’ve just skipped that map completely to get the the area south of that place.

Now i’m not saying if mounts should be in this game or not, but the fact that they shouldn’t because it takes away exploration in the game is stupid. Even having a mount with 75% increases speed is going to be more exploration then 30 seconds in a loading screen.

But add mounts to the game, just make them like the riding broom, make them cosmetic. The idea that my character can run across the whole of tyria on foot without any rests starts to hurt my feet, let alone my poor warriors feet.

I think you missed most of what I said. Or maybe you think exploration means the same thing as travel. I travel for about an hour each workday, but I rarely see anything new or exciting. After years of the same scenery, it’s a rare thing for a vista to make me stop and admire the view.

Exploration and discovery, for most people, aren’t synonymous with the morning commute. You explore the unknown, you discover things you’ve never seen before. Waypoints can’t be used until you discover them.

I argued that going slower— not using waypoints— was a better way to explore than riding on a mount, primarily because you were able to slow down and enjoy the view. When I run around Tyria, I stop and talk to NPCs. They have interesting dialogue. I often get caught up in dynamic events and the like because I meander so much in the beautiful environment of Guild Wars 2.

And no, I don’t spend much time on loading screens while exploring. Those are shown only when changing maps or using waypoints. I change maps only infrequently while exploring, and I can’t use waypoints that I haven’t discovered yet.

As our artists have also said in interviews that one of the purposes of concept art is that it is a way to convey mood to a viewer and to serve as inspiration for designers. Concept art is not necessarily a blueprint to follow by rote. There is stuff in the game that looks like the concept art, but just because something is depicted in the concept art doesn’t necessarily follow that it will make it into the game.

Please take your tinfoil hats off and be reasonable.

ROFL That is just funny! Tinfoil hats indeed. I’ll never understand people who take everything so literally. And as far as mounts go, who gives a flying kitten and a rolling doughnut about mounts? Even if ANet does make them, they could be purely cosmetic like the flying broom. Why doesn’t everyone just shut up, calm the kitten down and wait until ANet comes out with mounts (or doesn’t) when they are ready?

“There is stuff in the game that looks like the concept art, but just because something is depicted in the concept art doesn’t necessarily follow that it will make it into the game.”

Common sense is hard. Well, apparently is it REALLY hard for the OP. He wants mounts in a game with fast travel. LOL downer. Mounts are just another part of the now obsolete Chinese style MMO. They illogically distract from your characters appearance. This is a game about your hero, not about your horse. Riding a mount means the camera has to zoom out to see a larger character unit and less of your actual character. Now you’re looking mostly an animal while you ride around…

…nope. You’re playing the wrong game I think. Perhaps you should go back to the MMO you are familiar with where you can fly around on your pretty dragons ^.^ also there are a lot of other avenues you can use to fill out your interest of riding animals

["What the heck is going on?! Are you just teasing the many people who would love to see mounts in game? Arenanet please tell me why are you doing this?"]

It wouldn’t be hard to add “mounts”. Just make a costume weapon slot (like the broom) that has bonus move speed. It already will automatically disable when you enter combat because of how “town clothes” work so what’s the problem?

As mentioned in an above post, consider the camera, for example. What would happen to the camera angle when a norn tried to ride anything through a relatively narrow corridor?

Rhetorical reply:
“Well, they just wouldn’t be useable in tight places.”

How would one code that, exactly? A larger hit box? How big would you have to make it to account for low ceilings but not get stuck on a street sign or overhead lamp?
Or would you simply go through every map in the game and paint certain places as impassable?

This is just one of the challenges to overcome before mounts could be added.

But to focus on your suggestion specifically…

Just make a costume weapon slot (like the broom) that has bonus move speed.

So you’re saying we could just buy a permanent, out-of-combat speed boost? Something to let my ranger take “Signet of the Hunt” off of the skill bar?
Woohoo! Another skill slot! How many gems do those cost? I want one for my ranger, one for my elementalist, one for my necromancer…

Hey, wait. I have a better idea, one that doesn’t require camera system adjustments. Why don’t they just make everyone move faster? Only outside of combat, of course. Increased out-of-combat movement speed would be awesome!

Captain Obvious:
“We already have that!”

Oh.

Wait, why do we need mounts, again?

The riding broom is pretty fun and cheap. There needs to be more cosmetic mounts.

So … I demand a rideable Charr chugger
Darn it – it is a cultural imperative…. ;-)
I feel so betrayed running round on my paws all day when they show me tanks for Charr

I love the tone of most of the community on this one – i.e. chill !

So nice to have numerous fast travel points etc in this game which offsets real need for mounts.

Wait, why do we need mounts, again?

Because some individuals harbor a desperate, undying (you can even call it “risen”) need to mount things, perhaps because it’s something they can’t do outside of video games.

I kid! I kid! XP

Seriously, though, if statted/combat mounts are ever added, and they’re allowed in WvW, I’m going to make a character that has no other purpose than to dismount people (if that’s possible). And if there’s a tinfoil hat helmet skin I can buy by then, that character will be wearing one. That character will be an Asura. Yes… an Asura with a tinfoil hat. Oh, the warm tears that will drench the Mists as a little Hershey’s Kiss is running around knocking people off their high horses will be GLORIOUS.

Once I can ride a Charr while wearing a tinfoil hat, I can die happy.

I would like to believe trolling, and very good trolling… Sadly I am leaning towards “honest-aspy just doesn’t understand”.

Did you know there is no real Mars in a Mars Bar?

Feeling bad due to my response does not mean it was a personal attack.
It may just be that your original statement was wrong.

I don’t really think mounts are necessary for this game at this time, if they added regions that are infinitely open and very large terrains then maybe…I’m not opposed to it, I just think the game in it’s current state doesn’t really need them. Part of enjoying the game is running around exploring, taking a look at the scenery etc..Concept Art is always about promoting a specific atmosphere, or feel to something rather than being taken at face value, and expecting it to mean something related to the content very specifically.

Yes mounts would be an awesome edition and I would love to see them added to the game at some point as an option
However right now I think this game needs more armor skins and types of weapons,
Mounts are a great idea but the game needs other things first…

However this should NOT be a forbidden topic and I’m tired of seeing people yell at each other for discussing it or having the “audacity” to even consider them

I get the whole WP mounts are useless argument in theory but still they should be an option

1. I made the mistake of drinking coffee while reading this. Forum crazies are crazy.
2. Now, I’d love to see tinfoil hats available in game. If you think about it, something like that would be an entirely Asura thing to invent.
3. Yeah, please no mounts.
