Nightfury and Winter’s Presence are really cool, I think most of us can agree. But I think we too can agree that giving up our shoulder skin (arguably the best looking part of any armor set) for it really really sucks. In fact many of us chose not to work toward getting them solely for that reason.

My proposal is a new statless item slot for Vanity items like these. If ANet plans to add more of these ultra hard to obtain but very unique particle skins (I hope they do) it would be great to have an item slot all to their own without having to sacrifice one of the best looking parts of a characters look. And Balance would not be an issue since my proposed Vanity items would all be statless.

(Also, ANet, having a new statless item slot opens up a whole new world of gem store items…just saying…)

Thoughts?

That would be part of the beauty of a new slot, outfits would have no effect on it since outfits only replace the 6 armor slots. It’s why back items are unaffected by outfits either.

+1. I was thinking the same thing. These animated items are really cool, but the simple fact remains, I’d rather equip the shoulder scarf because for me it looks nicer overall. Would love to have a vanity slot.

Just turn them into agony infusion slots where you can place cosmetics.

They’d need to make six vanity slots (shoulder replacement and one for each accessory slot) unless they want to alienate the people who can currently use bees, ghostly infusions, colours and shoulder pieces simultaneously

No need for anything so drastic. The simpler solution would be to simply all the old items to remain in the game rather than converting them. Any new ones crafted after the date of the change would be Vanity Slot items from then on, but the ones crafted before that date would be “grandfathered in” and still be shoulders.
Then add an NPC in Lions Arch, call him a Vanity Trader, and allow people to trade in their old shoulder slots for their Vanity versions if they wish, 1 for 1.

The only issue I have with this suggestion is the stat loss. I just a few minutes ago finally finished Nightfury (thanks to the price drop on linseed oil due to it dropping in gifts). I am very happy to have it! I gave it to an alt that a) doesn’t wear visible shoulders and b) doesn’t already have an ascended armor piece.

It took a -huge- amount of resources, time, and work to make this thing. Getting a piece of ascended armor out of it made the expense much more palatable to me. If it converts to a vanity effect, I’d better still have an ascended piece of shoulder armor!

So I’d want it more like the feathered wings becoming backpacks, you talk to the NPC with the item equipped and you get the new slot skin.

Donari, yeah that’s exactly what I was imagining as well.

That would be great. Outfit + aura too, it’s a pity you can’t use WP with a Santa coloured arctic explorer outfit.

However…

our shoulder skin (arguably the best looking part of any armor set)

… errr, what?! Shoulder pieces are utterly abysmal on most sets.

It’s a shame you can’t use the winter’s presence with winter themed outfits or the scarf shoulders. Usually aura items get their own slots in MMOs, I’m making a pair in hopes Anet figures how amazing of an idea this is. Although the question would be what would the old armor already skined be reverted to?

Like I said before, 1 doesn’t cut it

We must have between 3 and 6 for all the stacking special effects that would otherwise use up gear and inventory items, like the Selfless Halo, or the coloring effect from hylek potions.

There should be a way to get those unlocked in the wardrobe, instead having to alter your build or constantly carry stuff around.

SUGGEST-A-TRON says:
PAY—ONCE—UNLOCKS—ARE—ALWAYS—BETTER.
No exceptions!

Would be great to have this for all aura effects, and they could just make a few that are specifically mutually exclusive (for example, all of the festival ones). They have like 5 – 10 – whatever slots for anything else like Queen Bee, Ghostly Infusion, and any future things. And yeah, replace the current items that they are into consumables that grant your account a skin that you just slot.

I’d like that idea.
I’m still using an exotic amulet instead of the ascended one to be able to use the bees on my main, or use the orange Halloween thingy at all. Plus, I rather use the exotic wintersday waterbreather than the ascended one for the nice underwater effect.
I’m not using nightfury or winter’s presence on any other characters than my Sylvari wearing leafy armor (especially cultural armor, light, T2 – which actually doesn’t HAVE its own shoulders, as they’re applied to the upper body piece ) because even the really cool Mistward armor looks strange without its shoulders.
I’d use them a lot more if I had a special slot for them. (Would be nice to be able to exchange ‘older’ items and trinkets for slot items. either with real exchange or while receiving the new item and keeping the old one, I don’t care, ofc it should be an accountwide unlock then.)

I don’t think it is necessary to wear up to 3 effects at once. With Anet trying to reduce graphical effects on skills (Grrr…) they should be happy about less visual noise created by that.

I’ve been thinking about the agonyinfusion idea too, but I gave it up pretty soon. It restricts effects to a certain armor grade as much as the trinkets do, which isn’t the best solution I think. In a game that’s all about skins and looking fancy I want my alts to look cool too, but I wouldn’t put any of my numerous characters into asc gear, even if I could. There’s just no need to do that, other than for my ‘mains’. Plus coding some sort of conversion would take a lot more effort than to simply add a new slot with all new items for it. or, to make it even more simple:

In your hero panel you have a dropdown menu for titles.
Why not add every earned effect to a collection, just like every earned title, that you can chose of per dropdown menu in your hero panel and easily switch between them. Like: “no effect”, “Winter’s presence”, “Preserved Queen Bee”, “Night Fury” and so on?
That wouldn’t even involve the coding of new items or slots, just a toggle between your earned effects.
