New to Guildwars
Whatever you find to be interesting.
i’m new to guildwars and i wanted to get some starting class advice.. which class do you guys recommend me to start off this game as?
My advice is to play something that sounds fun. Take a look at the descriptions of the classes and play what appeals to you. You get 5 character slots so feel free to experiment.
Is there a play style you tend to like (ie, are you trying to be a tanky ranged type, or are you drawn to spell caster doom from afar?)
The game gives you lots of flexibility, but it comes down to what you want. (eg. if you go in to be a melee tank on a thief, you may be in for a rough time.)
Whatever you find to be interesting.
This is the most correct answer to the question as stated.
If you meant however “What is the easiest/most powerful/beginner class?”
Than the answer is warrior or guardian.
Really, if you absolutly want the most rookie friendly class, Ranger, or Guardian.
Difficulty is Ranger < Guardian < warrior < necro < engi < thief < ele < mesmer for PvE imo.
that all being said, pick based on what you like to play. Not based on class. Every class is good and fun, and can do most everything. They all have a drawback or two, but pick what you want to play, not what’s easiest.
Well probably 2 tips….
1. Know now and get used to the fact you can’t be exclusively tank/dps/heal… They’re merely components to the larger theme of support/control/damage which all players have to do (at least outside of solo play).
2. You can choose any class and go to heart of the mists (located in the little PvP tab in your HUD). Regardless of your level, in this area you’re level 80 with all the skills unlocked. You can try out your toon here. Although it’s not a perfect gauge of how it’ll actually play, it’ll give you an opportunity to get an idea of what each class is about.
thank you for your advices .. usually i start off with a melee class like warrior and a stealth like thief but i thought i’ll try something new for a change haha but oh well looks like ill pick from thief or warrior lol

Guardian is a warrior type as well. Just with a different tool kit and more melee focus.
Nothing wrong with either classes, but what you’ll find as you start to get into higher content or do things more in group play is that melee does a lot of damage, but often is really risky…. though both those classes can provide some unique support choices and aren’t too too bad at ranged.
My advice is to plan on trying several professions, if not all, and not look at picking your first as all that important a decision. GW2 is somewhat different as not only don’t you have the holy trinity (tank/healer/dps), you don’t even have traditional ranged/melee distinctions. Elementalists can play successfully in melee range and Warriors do decent damage ranged (though they wouldn’t be played to potential solely ranged). Read over the professions and start with the one that sparks the most interest. They are all viable and all fun. I have five level 80 characters and don’t have a traditional “main”. I like them all.

i was wondering if each race has a special skill for their own race, do they?

Yes, they all have racial abilities:
Charr
Battle Roar
Hidden Pistol Fires a single pistol shot while wielding any weapon.
Shrapnel Mine Scatter up to 3 mines that cripple and bleed enemies.
Warband Support (Elite) Temporarily summons allies from your warband to fight alongside you.
Artillery Barrage (Elite) Calls in an artillery barrage that deals AoE damage.
Human
Avatar of Melandru
Prayer of Dwayna Self-heal.
Prayer of Kormir Removes a condition.
Hounds of Balthazar (Elite) Summons 2 fiery dogs.
Sylvari
Blessing of the Pale Tree Protects the user.
Grasping Roots Immobilizes a foe.
Norn
Bear Form (Elite)
Raven Form (Elite)
Snow Leopard Form (Elite)
Wolf Form (Elite)
Asura
Arcane Blast
Radiation
Golem Battlesuit (Elite) Creates a battlesuit that can be entered and operated by yourself or another party member.
Some might be of situational value, and I do see the Norn abilities being used, but racials in GW2 are much less important than what you would find, say, in another leading MMO. I wouldn’t pick a race based on racials.

If you’re looking for a melee class, the decision between Guardian and Warrior can be a tough one, and one I wrestled with when moving from GW1 to GW2.
I’m trying to get into my warrior enough to say something valid about it, but I’ll be honest, I fell in love with my guardian very quickly. I like group focused play and the guardian lets me be very group oriented… while still slamming away at face to face greatsword range!
Thief is also a ton of fun, though I will say that the learning curve is steep on thief (as others have aluded to.)
One thing you may enjoy is a class that is unique to the Guildwars franchise with the Mesmer. You get some stealth and teleport options and summon phantasms and clones….
Whatever you choose, welcome to the game and I hope you have fun playing!
