Newbie's First Impressions
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
Wait, is this a post about newbies’ first impressions, or about a veteran’s expectations of what he thinks newbies’ first impressions will be?
If you would watch the films you wouldnt ask so stupid question.
Now only few newbies stay in the game after playing it. It’s both bad for Arena Net and for veterans. Because without new people Arena Net wont have enough money to make high quality content.
If there would be more people who stay in the game, they would propably buy gems, invite their freinds etc. It would allow AN to hire more people, make more high quality content in shorter time -> make game better -> more people would start playing-> more money-> more content
The only problem is that the game must be appealing to more than 1/10 ppl.
First imressions are really important. So they need to find a way to fix this problem
I watched the YT videos (perhaps Glehmann did too?) and I agree with him. There’s no point throwing around insults or being demeaning, now.
Like I touched on before, it’s very easy (as a veteran) to say that the “new game experience” is very boring and slow for newbies. However, new players have so much to learn in terms of mechanics, vocabulary, understanding of numbers, UI, controls and all of the features that GW2 has to offer. Veterans already understand these like they’re mostly second nature.
Levels 1-10 are very important learning steps for a new players. Fundamentally, not much is going on content-wise as they have a lot of other things to focus on. Distracting them with alternative content probably isn’t the best way to go- if they’re distracted, they’re more likely to lack a good foundation of knowledge for the game and come into even more problems (and frustration) later.
Anyway, 1-10 isn’t a huge drag, nor is it time consuming. If a new player has little patience for the game at this point, then I doubt they would’ve stayed for much longer even if other content was available either. Not everybody will fall in love with the game, even if A-net do everything right. People have different tastes and might already be committed to another game or hobby.
If, as a veteran, you want levels 1-10 to be faster/more interesting on your alts, you have plenty of options that have been unlocked for you after completing your first level 80 character.
I’m sure that A-net have maximised the potential of the NPE as far as their budget and intel goes- it would be crazy not to have considering they’re looking to expand the playerbase for HoT. I’d imagine they have access to a huge amount of statistics regarding play-time and attrition rate- they know when and why players stop playing the game.
Meanwhile, you’re sure that new players are dropping from the game like flies. You have decided this because of your small group of friends have stopped playing as well as a WoW player on YouTube. My point here is this: you’re making huge conclusions on the health of the game from a very limited perspective and experience.

KcS.3826 it’s dificult to ppl who play wow start playing gw2 and like it because they try (like that guy) play like they are playing wow… sure they are both mmorpg but the gameplay is way diferent… i’m sure if GW2 instead of hearths have npc’s who give him the same quests as the hearths and in the minimap tells you what to do instead of reading the little text that guy probably would not rage quit the game… he clearly didnt read what to do in that heath and i’m sure he didnt read nothing about the game before playing it and even in game… he had personal story to do at lvl 10 and he didnt got there, he had vistas and others things to do but he didnt read the text after lvling up telling him not what to do but what he can do to lvl faster.
The problem is that and ofc because he wanted gw2 to be wow. He is clearly a wow fanboy its easy to see that while he was playing the game.
the only thing ArenaNet can do is make a better tutorial that explain visually all things ppl can do to lvl up, better UI that let them see where to go in minimap like an arrow or something like that… but even then i dont think fanboys stop playing wow to play gw2… when i saw a guy saying that he is grinding TO LVL UP in GW2 and play WOW… oh… and ofc that GW2 is PAY TO WIN … GG.
Likei said there are things that can be better in early game ALOT OF THINGS but not nothing that guy in the video say was right in my opinion..
regards
When i started to play GW2 (my fist MMO ever) in june 2014, it only took me about 5 minutes (four of which were spent to set the graphic and controls options in the main menu) to decide that my first objective in the game would be doing map completition, and that was exactly what i did. Even at the very beginning i never once had this problem of “OMG i dunno what to do pliz help!” you seem to talk about as if it was some sort of inevitable occurence for all new players.
I started exploring the map, doing any hearts and events i saw, and it was fun. I really have problems understanding what’s so difficult and boring about that. It’s a mystery to me.Oh, and about the PS… the first time i did it with my Elementalist as a complete noob i died A LOT. It wasn’t easy at all. The second, third, fourth, ecc. time it was a lot easier, but that was only because at that point i already know what to do.
Good for you then. But not evryone is as determined as you. Not evryone can do same thing over and over. And although exploring is really fun, not evryone is 100% sure what profession they want to play. And that means that they need to go through 1-10 zone couple of times. And because of the changes to new player experience they have to do a lot of things before being able to say if they like the proffesion or not.
Before new player experience patch you could say if you like your proffesion after ~5 lvls. Now you need to get to at least 15 if not 20.
There has never been a time when you could get a good feel for a profession after 5 levels.
Back at launch most people recommended getting to at least level 30 before deciding whether you liked a profession. That was enough to unlock your elite skill and get 10 trait points.
Back then it cost 5 trait points to unlock the first minor trait and 10 to unlock the first tier of major (selectable) traits, so 10 points wasn’t enough to get a feel for a real build but enough to try out each adept tier trait individually. (Although you did have to pay to switch trait lines, so experimenting like that was expensive.)
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”

It was just an comparation of what you were getting at lvl 5 and what you get at lvl 15-20 now.
The New Player Experience was first announced on Aug 28, 2014. Its purpose was to improve the leveling experience for new players and to improve retention. If it wasn’t doing its job according to ANet’s metrics do you think it would still be here? They have completely changed traits around twice in less than 3 years. If the NPE wasn’t meeting their projections don’t you think they would have removed or changed it by now?
All MMOs have poor retention of new players. Look at WoW. It currently has 7 million players but it has lost millions of players. Way more millions have tried that game and left than are currently playing. All a game can do is aim for new player retention that is the average for the industry. Since Guild Wars 2 hadn’t revamped the NPE then that suggests they are hitting the industry average or the new system is better than the old one for new players.
ANet may give it to you.

Not unless you saved it before the deletion. Otherwise, it’s gone.
