No Grind -- The Quote
The game is supposed to be FUN, not a GRIND.
You shouldn’t even realize that you’re grinding while playing.
This though, this is just dumb.
I put 200g down into crafting to try to get a dusk in the mystic forge and never got one, then they go ahead and increase the crafting cap to 500.
That’s basically 150 hours of completely wasted time spent in the game. I left this game for 2-3 months and I think I’m gonna leave permanently if this is the direction the game is going in.
Why should I put more time in this game if my time is being wasted playing it. Give me an answer ANET.
If the grind isn’t fun then you’re playing it wrong.
‘Grind’ in a game isn’t really about the ball being in the players court, as it is largely by design and game developers know and work with this. All game developers want to make an engaging game and study human motivation extensively to understand what motivates continued play. Early on in MMO’s the gear-grind carrot (power creep) won the day as it was easy to implement and the non-optional aspect seemed to keep people playing.
However, over the years we’ve learned a lot about game design theory and we understand that the offer you can’t refuse in vertical progression is really a greasy way to deal with humans. And, gamers have noticed that VP is just a treadmill. You are the same before and after the treadmill ride relative to other players and the environment. It’s not cool or fun to be exercised like a hamster and the original quotes from Anet recognize this and a lot of us bought the game based on those quotes. That’s why you see all these threads.
People … it’s time to say farewell to Guild Wars 2. Tag me if you know another good f2p mmorpg to play instead (i’m 100% serious, can’t keep up with this grinding crap forever).
And you’re going to find a free to play MMO with less grinding?
That’s pretty funny. Good luck with that.
GW1?
Not an MMO. Try harder.
GW2 has the least grind of all commercial AAA MMOs I’ve played. As for GW1, let’s not forget the amount of money or time it took to fill the HoM, let alone max Luxon. But it was all well spent.
How is it not an mmo? It’s massively multiplayer, online, AND an RPG. What am I missing here?
Since GW2 launch, arenanet themselves dismissed the notion that GW1 was an MMO.
<yawn>
Can we get back to arguing over the quote that the OP posted, please?
I agree, thank you
Mike Obrien says they don’t make grindy games. Discuss how GW2 is not grindy.
Because you’re not forced to do anything. Don’t want an Ascended, don’t do it then.

Tough beans, Anet. You can put lipstick on a pig, yada yada yada

GW1 was not called MMORPG at it’s launch to begin with. They marketed it as CORPG (Competitive Online RPG), because the “outside” world was all instanced.

Mike Obrien says they don’t make grindy games. Discuss how GW2 is not grindy.
There are no grinds in GW2, and, unlike many who make this claim, I have verifiable proof!
I queried coffee on the GW2 wiki and this was the result: “There were no results matching the query.”

So, clearly there is no coffee in GW2. Therefore, there are no grinds in GW2.
Did a little test in the builder how much those weapons you “need” to “grind” for really matters in damage. Let me know if I did something wrong.
1. full berserker warrior without ascended weapons and exotic trinkets:
= 6503 effective power
2. full berserker warrior with ascended weapons and exotic trinkets:
= 6582 effective power = 1.1% increase in effective power
So if you don’t feel you really really need that 1.1% increase in damage (or the looks) don’t grind for it! It’s easy like that

Eh, 4/10. You made the effort to do the google.

Interesting, but to really see the impact of ascended you should add in full beserker with ascended weapons AND ascended trinkets. Also you are not mentioning Critical Chance or Critical Damage which, when factored into damage output, have a greater than linear effect on DPS.

Loving the joke review, joke made me lol too.
full berserker warrior with ascended weapons and ascended trinkets:
= 7002 effective power = 7.7% increase in effective power (compared to only exotic gear)
So I guess with a full set of ascended gear that we will have in the next 1-2 year it will end up somewhere at 15-20% damage increase. That is significant but not gamebreaking in my opinion. For a min/maxer sure, but for a normal player who wants to do dungeons, WvW, etc they don’t need that. I hope they will add optional harder content where you might benefit from that extra percents but if you know how to play your class I am sure you will manage without.
It is definitely sad that GW2 has become a grind game. What initially caused me to like Gw2 was that you could pretty much play the game however you want. Now you are forced to complete certain tasks in order to get gear.
A couple of major changes should be made.
1. All ascended gear should be tradeable. It does not make sense to keep it soulbound. Look at it this way…. a lot of people love to run FotM. As a result of that, they end up with a number of ascended rings that they do not need. Let them sell those on the TP and use the money to buy other items of more interest to them.
2. Eliminate the concept of soul bound equipment. Once equipped, it should be usable by any alt on the account.

15-20% increase in damage output not a gamebreaker? Try rolling an alt or make a new account and try to grind to get to that content designed around 15-20% increased DPS. It hinders new players when they reach cap and realize that their guild is ahead of them in gear/instance progression by several months.

lol the site got it wrong you still get 5% crit dmg on ascended 1h weps not 6%.
The difference in damage now is 13%.
When whole tier is out (armor/sigils/runes/infusions) is out were looking at 25-30% damage increase.

MMO actually has to be a persistent world, in which Guild Wars 1 was not. Also, the developers (Arenanet) specifically said it was not an MMO, but rather a CORPG (Cooperative Online Role Playing Game, or a Competitive Online Role Playing Game). The towns that all players were at were basically a graphic version of a lobby, lobby like in Diablo 2.
That is why GW1 is in fact not an MMO, and was never made to be one.

They dismissed Guild Wars 1 as an MMO before GW1 was ever released =D
I’ve been playing this game, have 4 80’s, almost 5, and i have NOT felt the grind. i literally walk around and gain levels on my Mesmer, i just do dungeons for fun then BAM i somehow have full gear.
For a min/maxer sure, but for a normal player who wants to do dungeons, WvW, etc they don’t need that.
WvW isn’t just about zergs you know. I couldn’t care less about ascended gear if it didn’t affect wvw. Have fun being hit by a glass rifle warrior for 20K damage via killshot, because it will happen (my thief with 14k HP and 2600 armour was insta-downed once by said rifle warriors, and this was only with ascended rings and the backpiece).
The time-constrained nature of ascended weapon acquisition is even worse. It is 100% spending 2 weeks getting ready to have fun, vs having fun itself.

Yes, and, as i have suggested before as easy solution, reduce stats for everyone in www to exotic and problem solved.
But noooooo….

Thats how game was advertised and thats how they wanted it to be. Then made 180 turn 2 months after release.
When whole ascended tier is out…good luck gearing just 1 character for 1 build with ascended lol
And it WILL be HUGE difference in character effectivness.

I really wish people would get past wittering over whether or not Guild Wars is an MMO. Whether or not Guild Wars is an MMO is completely, absolutely beside the point. It does not matter.
Haha, Anet also said this would be a finely polished product at release.

He has made this post in two other threads today where he was hammered and disproven. Anet themselves (Mike O) have said the initial power level increase would be ~10%. And, that’s just initial. VP doesn’t progress by stopping.
Here is a simple fix my 7 year old son came up with.
“Dad, why not put the ascended gear on the trading post?”
“Well son….ummm…Good question?”
