Mounts assist in travel. This game was designed around using WPs for large distance or faster travel. The economy would be impacted if mounts were released (because fewer people would use WPs).

On top of that, mounts take up development time, modeler time and artist time. I would much rather they spent that time expanding the end game horizontally (more lvl 80 zones and activities).

Priorities.

And just to mention – as an elementalist, I can maintain a near-constant 33% speed boost simply by spec’ing appropriately in my traits (20 into air w/Quick Glyphs & Inscription) and using my glyph for health. I have a constant regenerating (and stacking) 33% swiftness boon.

I don’t really care about mounts. I just want the option to spec my Ranger to have a near-constant 33% speed boost too. Give me that and I’ll be happy.

I was under the impression you could do the same as a Ranger.

Warhorn offhand (Call of the Wild) = 15s switfness / 35s cooldown
Bird pet skill (Quickness Screech) = 10s swiftness / 20s cooldown

Would definitely add a cool factor.

  1. The cover of Final Fantasy Tactics. Knights on chocobos riding in tandem. Looks awesome.
  2. Assassin’s Creed and Shadow of the Colossus – Horses. One of the coolest things about those games.

Although, Guild Wars world doesn’t have horses. But if I remember, they do have undead horses in GW1 outside of TOA… and there is “Iron Hourse Mine”.

Way points cost money. More money than they should…. Sadly when you hit 80, you start to understand how much they end up trying to push you into using the gem store…..and that game being FTP comes at a cost. I would rather pay 15 bucks a month and have things be a bit more reasonable in price.

The devs decided mounts are generally stupid because everyone and their mother just rides around on their mounts everywhere. Once you have a mount, there’s no reason to be unmounted. I think there was also mention of people riding mounts into buildings which was/is a huge immersion killer to boot (and I agree).

Thus they removed mounts and just gave most everyone a way to improve their movement speed through class abilities.

This isn’t to say they aren’t going to implement mounts in the future, but for now it’s completely unnecessary. Adding in mounts would require re-balancing the game around their use. Considering the amount of class balance issues there are currently, ANet shouldn’t implement another system that is going to impact balancing until they’ve got the game in a better place balance wise.

I like them, but I’m wondering about the economic aspect:

Waypoints are a small, constant “tax” on travel, mounts would be a large one-time cost. That might make it hard to get the balance right on a price that made sense.

So, what about making mounts an ongoing cost as well? Every 1,000 miles (or whatever), your mount would need a meal (or a fueling, if it’s a golem) that would be comparable in cost to accumulated waypoint travel for the same distance.

This would also help with people being mounted when not traveling overland, since you’d be wasting a copper every few steps.

A reasonable fix to the economic aspect? Could actually be fun to RP: your horse won’t run anymore until you take it to the stable for a bale of hay – horse stables, golem fueling stations, and raptor offal-pits would become gathering points in cities much like crafting stations.

You do understand mounts are just a silly wow thing. They are totally unnecessary an are really just a lazy mans way of moving around.

The “Real” MMO’s pre that crap were 10x the size of wow an never used mounts because people wanted to travel, explore an do things. Not just farm shinys in dungeons all day.

Hell Asherons Call for instance, was a completely open world an just one area you traveled through took over 90 mins on foot to pass through, running in a straight line. (an chars could run very fast).

The travel system in GW2 is simplicity itself, the world is very small so mounts are useless.

Let’s not be fallacious here. Mounts are not a stupid WoW thing. They’re a staple in the fantasy genre and were around in even the earlier MMO’s.

Ultima Online had mounts back in 1997. They were tamed (and sold) by players, killable and stealable. Mounts can indeed add a lot to a game, but they’re really not that necessary in GW2 as it stands. Travel time is already very fast as is.

unless zones get insanely large… which they probably wont… then there is literally no need or point to them. If you are outside the zone, you use the waypoint closest to the area you want to be in… inside the zone… it takes me only about a minute maybe 2 to get to the area I need to go.

As have been sad before, the game was designed without riding mounts. I mean, there are waypoints.

If you want mount think about how it will fit in this game? We have so much waypoint.
There are no place for mounts, unless they will remove waypoints from locations and left only in the towns
(for example).

How do you see Guild Wars 2 with this riding mounts? Can you imagine it? I can’t.

You asking developers about this little, worthless(imo) thing. There are many thing that more important.

This game isn’t designed for riding mounts, come on people!

And about devouers in Charr Homelands in Origin Guild Wars. I’ve been thinking about it, and about what was requested here.
I think this is bad idea.
There are only two mounts in GW1, devouer and worm. They aren’t common mounts
you get use to. They are unique, only for special zones. Desolation and Charr Homelands, that’s it.

And you are suggesting put in GW2 mounts which will be kind of those two mounts from GW1. I think this is good idea, but as in GW1, only for special zones, events and etc, but not as mounts you can use everywhere.

Origin Guild Wars is without mounts, we traveled without mounts and I don’t see why we need them in Guild Wars 2.

As I was saying before, you just haven’t get use to play in mmorpg without mounts.

If you want riding mounts, Arena needs something to do with waypoints.

solution. mounts in gem shop.. gem shop would finally get something i would be happy to buy. gems are cheap so would be available to all. Adding new content to have fun with > mount races between friends or something.

and yes wvw has ALOT of walking but it would in a way impact negatively on wvw
ex. you wipe defends at keep. before door is down to 40% they are already back in since mounts. pve mounts great for getting around to events faster/ wvw mounts bleh. just imo

Obviously I think mounts are a bad idea. They are never handled well and they are always lore breaking or unrealistic. Where does your mount come from when you want to ride it (btw, it isn’t just wow that did that…. EVERY mmo does that)? Are you a secret beast-master and have trained this animal to stick with you until the end times? What would Norn and Charr ride? Massive moas? tanks? what?

I don’t miss those things at all.

In stead of mounts, I would rather see cost reduction in using the waypoints. Or no cost at all.

And if they do implement mounts at some point, I hope the mount frame will be the same or less then the player frame, so we won’t see the vendors completely covered in mounts.

They could put mounts in, but if they did they would (1) have “riding tolls” that would be equal to the current WP costs and (2) have a dismount mechanic that basically would dismount you every single time you get aggro. If they did that, it would be fine.

having mounts changes huge aspects of the game, not even counting in the economical effects. it, for example, allows you to run through high level areas without keeping attention to the enemies. etc. etc.

Mounts are the one thing that will seperate a flourishing MMO from a niche MMO. Period.

Every.single.whiny.complaining.elitist that doesn’t want mounts is MAYBE, .05% of the entire population of the game. MAYBE LESS.

The rest of us, that will actually make or the games success wants mounts. If ANet intended to make an MMO for the masses they’ll implement mounts. If they know what I know and that this games “iPhone Shiny!” will wear off in 6 months like all other MMOs that have failed to do what is required to make a long lasting, successful MMO, then they won’t bother with it, becuase they know it’s dead by February. This will appeal to the MUCH LARGER crowd that don’t flex kittens in gear, pvp, pve etc.

It’s just annoying to me how Gw2 has to be so different from every other game that some parts are just not good at all. Yes, I do agree WoW had it’s time and now it’s gone stale, but that’s not a reason for Gw2 not to have some way of travel other than teleporting all over the place.

At best, they give a moment of immersion. The IMS is for lazy or broke players (which honestly is their fault for not managing their money, it’s cold but true, don’t waste it all and you will have toll money).

The immersion? I don’t see the point. Impassable terrain, resource nodes, hearts, events and being forbidden from using them in places.. (yes, that’s a huge no to combat/entering villages, etc.)

1) Travel Costs make money worthwhile in this game. Money is just not something you have 10.000 of in your bank with not being able to use them on anything useful. In return it makes doing hearts, events and so on worthwhile because money is worthwhile.

2) Yes mounts look good in Red Dead Redemption and Shadow of the Colossus. But in MMO everyone has them, and they looking annoying. they clutter up the screen. besides all the work that goes into making them, the animations for them, there is also all the bugs. people standing in the air off cliffs, looking stupid when used under water, breaks imersion when they poof out of thin air.

3) Go to Stormwind in WoW, in WoW and see the madness. They are childish, lame, and annoying. there is nothing cool about them. at all.

4) wasted development resources in animations, and other resources. time and money that could be spent making significant GAMEPLAY improvements, are speant on a cosmetic annoying features that makes the game even faster. people are already not social enough. I dont want people towering through the world.

5) WvW – it’s a strategic real life element of siege warfare of having to play a game of waiting-for-reinforcements. taking the time to get into the action is a cornerstone of the experience.
instead what they need to do, is give players more tactical awareness and gameplay when getting into WvW – having the Map show all friendly playerrs, and not just those nearby so players can make risk/reward assesments on where they are running to, better chat functionality so you can communicate and coordinate people.

Travel by foot is both a punishment and a tactical element that allows other force of mustering up their forces. if you have constant assaults with no breathing there will be no chance to ever hold a keep.

6) just because other games have it, it does not mean GW2 should. Mounts are not a part of the spirit of guild wars. it does not belong, its not right.
If mounts would have to be added, they should NOT be useable in towns or outposts or indoors, or in other places where they dont belong. they should not offer speed increase at all, and should be 100% vanity. they should not make rideable crazy creatures. it kills the sense of fantasy and place when you ride giant dragons.

these games are unrealistic, but you dont have to break the context of your own reality in the fantasy sphere. there are still natural laws in tyria, and it doesnt fit having every character riding. everywhere. it doesnt fit with my picture of how should look. it looks off when everyone is on mounts. in film and literature its always the majority of the forces that are on foot.

and that’s the WoW problem. the problem with WoW, with its gear and its mount is that blizzard CONSTANTLY. CONSTANTLY, had to 1up themselves in more extreme and more awesome. at lvl 60 they had crazy rhino-like mounts and shoulderpads with giant spikes. then when the cap went to 70 they went even crazier. and even crazier at 85. and then suddenly you had people wielding two-handed weapons the size of the eifel tower and mount riding on Apollo 13.

and the problem is that all players want that thing. it wont be like those cool mount games like Zelda or Red Dead. because its very few people on mounts. in GW2, EVERYONE would have these things. it would be to play the game wrongly to not have it. indirectly its being forced on all of us.

So I say – dont do it! I already levelled from 70-80 in 5-6 hours. I loved it, but I dont want it faster. I dont want people to traverse faster through the world because its boring, or to mount everywhere. When I meet people in the wild I wanna see them on foot. makes it a lot more cool, and not lame looking. Mounts rub me the wrong way like indie hipsters who are wearing snow caps in summer are rubbing me the wrong way.

theres only 2 reasons someone would want a mount in this game

1: vanity ~ w/e floats your goat

2: an attempt to outrun mobs and speed throu content ~ would totally backfire, you would go broke, miss a lot of content and 9/10 be dismounted and get your rearend handed to you because youre unprepared for anything other than traveling as fast as possible.

This world doesn’t have any mounts. Get use to it. Don’t ask turn unique game to something common.
Many of GW1 funs are already complaining about turning unique game into something common. And I can understand them, cause I’ve played in Origin Game too.

Some sad only 5% against mounts? This is your imo, not a fact, something you get from your head. Unless you have proof.

There are games without mounts and this is okay.

Arena.net didn’t put mounts in the game because you will ride and will miss a lot of content.

And aesthetically, riding mounts don’t fit in Guild Wars world.

It’s like in Gothic, where I can’t imagine riding mounts as well.

In GW1 wasn’t any riding mounts except Devourer in Charr Homelands and Worms in Desolation Desert. But they are for specific zones for specific quest.

For example in Desolation Desert mortal will die if he’ll take a step on the sand, so we need those worms because it’s only way to move in those lands.

I suppose you get a point.

Each dungeon should have a mount, and WvW, karma etc. Getting the mount would keep me busy for another week and then quit till something good comes out again. Like actual endgame.

Simple question to all those people who think mounts should be in the game right now..

What’s more important to you…100% bug fix or a mount? I would rather they fix the bugs, exploits, hacks, etc in the game before you get a mount that’s not even needed anyways.

Kids, listen.

So, what have we learned kids? Shhhh.. you’re the minority. Mounts need to be implement, if they don’t then, well. On to the next MMO for 2-3 months, and then rinse and repeat. It’s quite easy.

Again, I need to remind you because you’ve already ignored it once. Those of you that DO NOT want mounts. are 0.5% of the entire population or LESS. You don’t matter, nor to you count. Shh..

This must be the worst post I have read and this forum, and that’s really something. Honestly.

Mounts are completely unrelated to how good, bad, cliche or mainstream a game is. Your post makes no sense. There is nothing more constructive I can add to this.

The reason why mounts are not in the game have been given in this thread countless times. Besides everything else, like breaking the economy, they are simply useless, because you can travel basically everywhere in an instant.

Agree. Mounts need there, where are no any teleports. We have so much waypoints, we can traval from Rata Sum to Ebonhawke in a instant. Why we need mounts than?

WwWww? Lets imagine mounts there. It will brake tactic, don’t you understand? You don’t have to teleport to waypoint after death anyway. Comrades will res you anyway, fight for resing you. Or if they far from you, than maybe fight is already lost and it’s no need to rush.

You need to think, mounts will make you think less. Because when you’ll die, you simply ride on a mount and quickly return to battle. There is no strategy in this case.

WwWwW isn’t arena, where you can quickly stand up on nearest waypoint and quickly return to a battle.

Seize the day.

I don’t feel like I need mounts, the game has systems in place to replace them, I just think the systems the game has need to be fine tuned to support the decision to not have mounts. Reduce waypoint costs and give every class a way to obtain permanent swiftness (at least outside of combat) like some classes can do. This would eliminate most of the mechanical needs for a mount, the only thing left would be aesthetic.

Currently the game doesn’t hold true to the fast travel thing with it’s excessive costs and class imbalance when it comes to access to swiftness (or movement speed signets).
