The Black Lion Daily Herald made it to the ANet Meet & Greet in Cologne, Germany (aka Köln, DE) and spoke briefly to Mike Z, the new Lead Game Designer. You can read the full story on FB or pasted to reddit. Here’s the stuff I found interesting (verbatim or [paraphrased]; questions by Herald, but emphasis mine):

  • There will be no build templates at the launch of Path of Fire. …they are aware the community wants
  • All features for the expansion have been revealed, so we shouldn’t expect any other surprising reveals.
  • [did] they [have] plans to make Chronomancer the main tank for raiding? …it was never their intention…players are too clever
  • …have even considered adding a new race for PoF? Mike said new races in GW2 are “not impossible but very unlikely” to appear in the future. Implementing them would require a lot of resources that can be spent better on creating new content relevant for all players.
  • Queen’s Jubilee and Dragon Bash? …due to the changes in tech, both of those events need updating just like Super Adventure Box did … Mike said that they want to bring back both events in the future.
  • With 4 weeks left to the launch of the expansion we shouldn’t expect new “current events/side stories” right now.
  • …what happened with the Dervishes that we remember from #GW1? [will we] meet any of them as NPCs? Mike smiled and replied “I will let you discover it”.
  • [are they] checking the meta for example from qT to see which classes are omitted by the min-maxers? Mike said that they are in fact checking that, but balancing things is not that easy, cause players will always find class compositions and synergies of classes that are the most optimal and some classes will always simply end up being less represented. What’s important though is that right now even though not every class is considered to be optimal (meta), it is possible to use any of them in a raiding environment and they are all viable. Mike himself raids using non meta classes.
  • Renegade …underwater skills? Mike …thinks it’s a bug.
  • underwater combat? Mike was kind of dodgy here and only replied that things can always get better.

Reassuring about the Gauntlet. Not sure why they couldn’t just say that earlier, but good to hear it’s on the “to do” list down the line.

I will never understand the evasiveness on underwater. They must have a stance on it.

Even though we knew it wasn;t coming with PoF, to hear it is still a kicker. I’m surprised this isn’t a top priority QoL feature. It’s just…..necessary at this point.

Disappointed that there aren’t any more surprises in PoF. It left me underwhelmed.

HERETIC! HE’S A HERETIC! BURN THE NON-META!

lol but in all seriousness good to see not everyone uses meta even when they know it exists. 8D

so in other words they can upgrade Queen’s Jubilee and Dragon Bash? events but yet

can not upgrade or add things like SLI DX11 cross fire support
or support for ryzen or ryzen thread ripper cpus

There’s no comparison. Updating QJ/DB Queen’s Jubilee/Dragon’s Bash is a matter of adjusting mobs to meet the new player builds; it’s the sort of thing they do every day. Updating the entire game engine to utilize dx11 etc is an entirely different technical problem (and one that ANet engineers have said doesn’t deliver much benefit).

edit: replaced the abbreviation “QJ/DB” with the name of the events; my apologies for any confusion caused by my laziness.

that is a out right lie about DX11 . if it was the truth then why is it games like wow and ESO upgraded to it ????

This game runs on a bowl of spaghetti. Adding support for the modern hardware not gonna help when engine is older than some of the players.

The build templates thing is kind of absurd. It can’t possibly be that hard to do, and it’s badly, badly needed.

I wish they would introduce a new race or two, but not traditional. Maybe add alevel 80 zone like in LS3 and let people start a boosted character there with no Personal Story.

I know they worry about animations, but I’m one of those people that would rather have a Koda, for example , with a basic fur look than not have a new race.

Just my thoughts.

not sure what QJ/DB is I do not use the games terms words at all.

Na was just shortening the two events you mentioned.

My apologies, War, since you were the one who had made the comments, I thought you’d get the reference. I shouldn’t be so lazy about typing things out.

To your point: updating content is a lot easier than updating a game engine. There’s no comparison between fixing an old festival and changing the way the entire game works.

And while I’m sure you’re plenty knowledgeable about DX11 and so on, I think I’ll trust ANet’s engineers comments about whether the benefits outweigh the risks.

I am also very excited about the gauntlet and queens jubilee having a real chance at coming back, since I didn’t get to experience them the first time around.

I think the evasiveness on underwater combat is because they have a stance that they don’t think a lot of players will necessarily like. Think about how silent they were on mounts after HoT. They’ve been developing PoF for almost 2 years now, and have been quiet about mounts, because there was a ton of outcry against them. But the implementation was absolutely fantastic, and they knew that, so they went with it anyway. They might be doing something similar with underwater combat, coming in with a full overhaul. But since so many players abhor it so much (myself included), it would just kitten them off to hear that ANet is “wasting” development time fixing it (though I don’t agree with this. I’d love to see an underwater combat overhaul).

It’ s more likely that they were quiet about mounts because they are quiet about anything that is “in development” as opposed to “nearly ready to launch.” There’s lots of people clamoring for mounts even as there are lots railing against them.

So perhaps let’s say simply:

Mounts have been development for 2+ years and we only heard about them (officially) when they were ready for launch. The same might be true for underwater combat and for that matter: build templates, sigil swapping, and overhauling WvW match-ups. ANet is cagey about the stuff they are working on.

In contrast, they are more clear when they are not working on something, e.g. LS1 return, new races, and new professions. (And that doesn’t even mean we’ll never, ever see them; it just means we won’t see them within the next year or three.)

Queen’s Jubilee was one of my favorite events ever in the game. I’d love for it to return.
