It’s a gimmick and all businesses know that limited-time gimmicks work.

Like it or not, businesses make more money than unhappy customers with gimmicks.

I’ve never run into a situation, in the real world, where a business runs a limited time sale and won’t sell more after the so-called deadline (assuming they still have stock).

It would have made more sense for them to just have a sale of wings for 1 day at 500 Gems, and then any days after that the price would be 800. Everyone would still rush to get them while they are cheap, stock would not cease, and any people after that would just pay a little extra, Anet Wins, us folks (the people that didn’t get them) would still be willing to pay the little extra (knowing it helps keep the game running). Everyone gets what they want.
Now the rest of us will lose interest as the item we waited for is now possibly out of reach for who-knows how many weeks/months.

I’ve already lost interest. There are a lot of people talking about how so many players have them and how ugly they are in-game. That is affecting my perception of the situation. Now I really don’t want them anymore. Couple that with my spiteful attitude toward the whole situation and I’m definitely not getting them.

Whether they were 500 or 800 gems wouldn’t matter to me. Money is not an issue. Finding things I actually want to spend my money on is.

You’ve opened the thread half an hour ago but now you’ve lost interest? Why did you open the thread in the first place?

Not sure where you were during the 24 hours it was on the gemstore, but it had a “limited” and “time remaining:” tag which showed clearly how much time you had to buy them.

Now since these will come back to the store, you did not miss anything. Also, if now you don’t want them because others say something about them, you actually didn’t want them in the first place i suppose.

Man you sure know how to get all that drama going on, “Now i really don’t want them anymore” ? they were just a preview, they will come back. You don’t have to act like a spoiled child, get over yourself.

Go cry some place else, just don’t fill the forums with a 999th thread about this. They were avaible for 24 hours, that’s quite a long time, all it took was 5 minutes to get online, see everyone running around singing “I belive i can fly” and you would have noticed the wings.

And the 24h flash sales, yeah it’s a thing in the real world too…idk where you are from, but where I am from, there are things like this.
Also not only for items you can buy, google+ used the same idea, you had to be invited in by someone that already had an account, this made the social network “Exclusive”…like the wings are now…“EXCLUSIVE” , they made tons of money and when the wings will be up again, they will make again lots of money, even if you “Don’t want them anymore cause you want them NOW”

some people…

Next time use more hyperbole in your post aswell, this ensures Anet will take it more seriously /lol

Also, limited time offers are extremely common here in europe, i hear a bunch of them on the radio everyday. often they are really good offers because retailers want to move masses of said product/service.

Pfft the pig is better anyway. That aside … is there any gemstore item that didn’t get a repeat sale at some point?

Perhaps anet should introduce an options feature, maybe in a balance patch, where u can toggle the ability to have ur gem store pop up upon login with a red arrow showing where and how to buy new item. Hopefully that would cause less anrer amongst those who usually are unaware of such sales.

I think the bigger problem is all these people (or as the industry puts it: “whales”) that fell for this “flash sale” marketing gimmick. On a digital items that is tied into artificial supply and demand. I should not be that surprised. Since all those free to play (not really) mobile games, Call of Duty: same old, and pre-order season pass with some of the DLC strategies have been doing verily well the last couple of years. The consumer market is really getting more gullible every year. With marketing techniques as ancient as when man first figured out how to barter for goods. Just like all those people who invested into the Beanie Baby craze a long time ago. The only difference now is digital pixel items scarcity is a thing. Might as well be selling you air for a limited time offer.

If you don’t check in regularly, no, they don’t want your money. Until later. Because right now they’ve inserted a barbed spur in your brain that when it comes around again, you’d better jump on it. In fact, you’d better jump on anything you see that you want, because it could vanish like that one time with the wings…

Right now you’re telling yourself “oh no, I’m too clever/annoyed to fall for that” but the reality is even if you are one of the magical single digit percentage personality types that won’t be swayed, the technique is overwhelmingly effective.

They even said this was a one-day sale of FUTURE gemstore items, so yes it will come back.

Well, you’re in luck. They’re “out of stock” at the moment, but when they get more you’ll be able to buy it again.

You remember The Secret of Southsun? And how for a few weeks afterwards, everyone was wearing a Sclerite Karka Shell backpiece?

It’ll pass. It always does.

Maybe they did, but they also managed to anger a bunch of their players. Does the extra sales they may or may not have made make up for the loss of good will among the players they deliberately frustrated?

Quite simply: yes.

This isn’t the first time they’ve done it and the fact they’re doing it again suggests they found the benefits outweigh the costs. For all your anger you’re still here posting on the forums and playing the game, the anger will eventually fade, and you’ll return to your spending habits – up until the next time you miss a 24-hour sale of something desirable, at which point the cycle resumes.
