Opinions about Orr [merged]
Personally I like Orr, a lot..
It’s supposed to be annoying (hard), after all, you’re far behind the arch-enemy’s lines..
Why would there be safe-points?

I still don’t see how people are mixing annoying and hard, it’s not the same thing.
For instance, most waypoints are contested so you need to run where you need to go, that’s an annoyance, not a challenge. I can’t walk five steps without being snared, so I stop and take down the five risen on my back, they’re an annoyance, not a challenge.
Like you said, we are behind enemy lines, of the strongest enemy in Tyria, and yet his forces are a rag-tag bunch of annoyances just standing around? It seems a bit too sloppy to be a zone at war.
Someone else made this suggestion, and I think it’s so brilliant, I’ll repost it.
Let us actually make a push and fight for the zones. Let each zone have a camp, and from there you need to take the zone, fight back the undead in a tug of war. They take, and control territory, that you then need to take back the land. Fight all the way to the temples to actually unlock them, and make it all worth your while to actually stand behind the Pact. Orr should feel cohesive, not scattered. And depending on who controls an area, that side will have patrols.

Except your not behind enemy lines, the army has pushed inwards. Armies don’t usually cover every square inch of land, they form lines or fronts. If say the pact has advanced to pentinent waypoint then everything from there back is clear of most of zhaitan’s forces. If you follow the storyline as well then:
When you get to cursed shore zhaitan is on his last stand. He has lost his main source of power(mouth), his knowledge of what the pact is doing(eye), and his army(temple of lyssa). Cursed shore should be very sparse for orrians except them putting up last stands at important locations.
The bulk of Zhaitan’s minions would have been in Straits of Devastation as it is incredibly important that the pact doesn’t gain a foothold. It is also the easiest spot to stop the advancing army, basically if he can’t stop them there it is going to be harder to stop them in say Malchor’s. SoD having lots of mobs makes sense and the events there are pretty spot on. Malchor’s is where it falls apart.
When we reach Malchor’s Zhaitan’s lines are broken and the pact is advancing. Whatever was left of his forces would have been protecting 1. The Eye 2. The mouth and 3. The temple of Lyssa. Lyssa is done very well, the whole event there fits what should be happening with them heavily defending it, but the rest isn’t that great. Well the battle at the camp just before the curse shore portal is good. The rest though just doesn’t make sense. Why is there suddenly inquest at jinx island? Why is there a ton of Oriians standing around guarding nothing? They could have done a lot more with this zone like using his dragon henchmen to help defend stuff.
Depending on how you want to look at including the personal story into the map, cursed shore should also be regrowing life since the source of orr is purified. The temple of melandru shouldn’t even be there since it gets nuked. Cursed shore should have been all orrian defense at bottlenecks, not mobs every square inch doing nothing. It should have also featured the regrowing of Orr as long as you have the source of orr captured.
TLDR: Tons of mobs in Orr standing around doesn’t make sense storywise or strategically passed SoD.
I must be weird.
I like Orr. When I got nothing to do (like, my regular dungeon group isn’t on. I like the dungeons.) I often go to the cursed shore or malchr’s leap to walk around, chop wood, kill stuff and do events I happen to come across.
I like the desnity of the events.
I like the density of the NPCs but I do concur, there should be more than 3 or 5 different types for the daily kill variety.
I like the questchains and while some are broken sometimes, most are OK most of the time on my server.
I think Orr is a great place. I like it. I’m sorry.
As someone who just got through the Straits of Devastation hoping Malchors leap would be better. I completely agree with the OP.
Seems silly that the entire content of 70 to 80 is nothing but group events and yes I know I can just ask if anyone wants to group up but I shouldn’t be forced too and Orr FORCES you too group up.
Its very tedious and I would take hearts any day over this migraine of a place.
Edit PS: Orr should come with a disclaimer and a bottle of lube

Imo orr is a good end game area.
I’m used to harder mmo’s and many area’s in gw2 are a joke.
You can just run trough them with some swiftness and a roll now and then.
Orr makes that a little harder with all the ccíng mobs.
It’s not just a happy world where you can just run to that ori ore and get your free money.
Besides.. it’s not an rpg it’s an mmorpg, If you have troubles solo, stick with some other people (friends/guild) perhaps?

The confusion on “Annoying” and “Hard” baffles me too.
Orr is not hard, it’s annoying.
Fireheart is much more difficult, but it’s fun. – IMO of course.
Another person on page two mentioned this as well; It’s almost like two completely different conversations are going on… and it’s pretty funny.
Player 1: Orr is no fun.
Player 2: l2p, it’s supposed to be hard.
Player 1 (now confused): I didn’t say I was having a hard time, I said it wasn’t fun.
Player 2: l2p or group.
Player 1 (probably laughing by this point): No, it’s not a difficulty thing, it’s a fun thing. It’s annoying.
Player 2: So because you are having a hard time you want it dumbed down like WoW?
Player 1: wth?
Of course, I find the same mentality when bringing up WvW. I don’t find that fun either. I find WvW also annoying and not very fun. I told a guildie yesterday I wasn’t planning on getting 100% on any of my alts. They asked “Why?” and I said “WvW was annoying to have to play in.”
Her reply was “It’s not that bad. I never got ganked and found it easy to get where I needed to go.”
I laughed and said “What does that have to do with the fun factor?”
She continued assuming I just thought it was hard “I can help you.”
I had to reply “I think you are forgetting I already have a 100% and already told everyone I thought it was easy. It’s not FUN. And if I want PvP I load up Planetside 2.” – which I then asked her if she wanted an invite key into that. She said “No. I don’t like FPS.”
I asked “Why?” and she said “I don’t find them fun.”
I was so tempted to say “It’s not that bad, I can help you.”

Just to share, I am an adult with two friends. I am a Thief with Lv78 Armor/Lv80 Weapon (exotic), +green Trinkets/Accessories + Halloween Backpack full MF with a measly 15k HP. My friends uses a Necro same gear as me (Lv78 Armor, green, backpack etc) around 20k HP and my other friend uses a Mesmer with the same gear stat and about 20k HP.
We ALL don’t find Orr annoying. These are three classes, with non-OP armor/weapon/trinket focused on MF. My friends manage to save up to 30gold till this time (they play less than me) and while I save about 200g. We all get those money farming Orr!
Sure, my friends knows Jormag but find it less appealing to wait 2.5hrs to 3hrs since they have limited play time. So they stuck with Orr, and just run around killing stuff, gathering, and joining events when they can. And we all don’t play at same time except on weekends so they play solo, join with others when we can, and just enjoy fighting these mobs.
So my point is, it’s not about age or skills (my friends have less skills than me). It all boils down to preference. Some likes it, some don’t. What others find annoying, others find the same, some find it easy, some find it challenging, some find it stupid, some find it rewarding, and sometimes, others find it FUN (like me). So if it’s changed to someone else’s preference (let’s say ANet agreed to implement the OP’s definition of what is not annoying), I’m pretty sure there will be others will find that mechanic annoying, and the cycle continues.
I hope Anet doesn’t change it for the “worst”, if they need to, make it harder and more challenging. As it is right now, we seldom die. I say make these mobs up to Lv90 where some “normal mobs” require at least two people but at the same time, give better loot. Difficulty = better rewards, at least, a part of Cursed Shore should be like that if not all part of it. That may also persuade us to get power gear and full Lv80 exotic armor rather than MF Lv78 gear!
But then again, others might complain that the zone is too annoying…..but that’s my point (preference, tolerance level, acceptance level, etc). I always think that if something is too hard (or annoying), then go somewhere else. Like the saying goes, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen…whether that “heat” stands for “annoying” or “hard” is up to someone else’s definition or tolerance or acceptance…

Orr is terrible if you’re solo, and it’s wonderful if you’re in a group.
I hate the god kitten risen… its completely ruining the game for me… i kill one and then he usually re-spawns almost instantly and if not he has 5 friends that come in behind me to kill me… continuously i’ve gotten onto guildwars happy to play and about 5 minutes later i sign off cuz i dont wanna deal with thier kitten, and i go play another game. I like challenges dont get me wrong but risen spawn to fast and have a ridiculous number count. warriors and guardians probably dont have much of a problem with them but as a scholar class my only option is usually to get kitten in the butt. I hate risen and they are ruining my game experience. Also the fact that one area in an entire map is non-contested blows up the kitten to… i die once and have to fight my way again through hordes of risen from miles away of where i just died. arena net… please… change something so i dont quit guildwars… ive played everyday sense it came out… DAY 1… im an ORIGINAL

I’ve completed all 3 Orr maps while soloing. Its annoying sometimes, but after a while you get used to it, and change your tactics, get appropriate gear, etc. Its actually fun if you have the correct mindset. Feels so good when you run through a swarm of them and you survive due to using the correct skills and dodging at the right time.
Orr is just one example of an idea that Anet thought was great… but were wrong.
Read part of this topic and agree with a lot. I don’t even go there anymore. It’s just too darn boring. All that occupies the place is risen back to back. I would prefer them to thin it out a little and add a longer time between their knockdowns and pulls. If i get caught up in a group of 3 i can get pulled and knocked back so much its crazy. I don’t have enough of a stability buff to really stay upright all the time.
Eh maybe something will happen. and i swear if the lost shores is all risen themed i am going to be annoyed.

Exactly. I don’t find Orr especially hard. Just pretty friggin’ annoying. It’s not even… well, look, I don’t mind contested Way Points. I get it. Gotta keep events moving along. I just don’t like that I might spend 20-30 minutes unlocking a WP, and then five minutes later it’s under attack and lost after I leave. To be fair, this isn’t just an Orr problem, it is a game problem. I guess it’s digressing from the topic a bit, but there are a number of events world-wide that a guy or gal can spend a lot of time working to clear, just to have it over taken by mobs a few minutes after ya leave. It sucks. Not just mechanically, but also on my moral. What’s the point of investing a lot of time into an area just to have it all back to contested points and respawned mobs 30 minute later? I dunno. I don’t know what the answer is, either. I understand that people want to run events — they’re not just for me. I understand I’m not the only one out there that wants to do kitten. Still, I find it just kinda depressing in a way.
However, being part of a good group that got the pwn in on the Priest of Balthazar was fun. Even the run up to opening the gates of Arah is fun — when it works. There are things to like in Orr, especially when focused in a group setting. Solo… well. Meh. Less is more, as far as I’m concerned. And putrifiers can suck my Hostess ding-dong. True story, I was running away from a mob in Orr and I decided to call it a night. I ported back to Lion’s Arch. kitten putrifier actually pulled me back out of Lion’s Arch and into Malchor’s Leap where a farmer than knocked me down so the risen mob could then proceed to curb-stomp the living kitten out of my toon. NO WHERE IS SAFE. NO WHERE.
“Is it uplevel ranger season yet?”
I think Orr is a mixed bag. Clearly, Malchor’s Leap and Straits of Devastation are desolate wastelands full of annoying mobs and no players.
However, Cursed Shore on the other hand is an events amusement park with great loot and farming. I like hat, because it actually succeeds well as a high end area.
Endgame SHOULD be an events amusement park because one of primary objectives of endgame is farming.

Absolutely agree with Vaulken. From a gathcraftsplorer’s view, as an engineer I don’t bother going here because I KNOW exactly what will happen. Here’s the setup for you.
I see an Orachulum node (the first in almost none.) in the shores, I go up to it try to see if anything’s around. I don’t see anything because I’m too close to the side of a building (as a Charr thanks) a duo of an OP necro and one of the guys with the Axe that pulls you back walks around the corner on their patrol. Bam, I’m dead before i can even pull out a kit and mouse aim to throw a grenade that takes to long to kill anything anyway. (especially after the multiple endless and unwarranted nerfs to the pve portion of this profession).
Instead I have to spec my thief to have as many bonuses and healing and escape options as possible to run around there solo. That way I can actually farm mats without the problems the other slower and less escapee professions have in these Zones. I sincerely hope that the new patch has more of the rare mats (because even the level 80 zone has 4 ores and 4 trees. I swear that’s all I’ve ever seen there, everything else is mithril and cypress.) because It’s going to take a loooong while to get enough to do anything meaningful for any weapons or jewelry. sigh.
I like the concept of the zones but not the execution. The zones are visually impressive and really convey a sense of a land corrupted by evil. However, they are the most annoying zones in the game.
I won’t even say that they are too challenging because the annoying aspects is what makes them really hard. For example, a risen gorilla can cripple you for 30 seconds, if I remember correctly, and this cripple persists after it’s death. Is there really a reason for such a long kitten cripple from a standard PvE mob?
Then you have all these other mobs that cripple, stun, knock down, pull, poison, set you on fire, etc. Playing in Orr zones is an exercise in frustration not because of the difficulty but because of the annoyance.
We need to make a meme (or set of memes) for orr and all the risen quotes… I swear Anet is really trying hard to get their game to become meme worthy…
“Everyone, come!”
And show the mob saying it.
Then below that,
Just not to Orr!
Orr is easy, fun, and it’s a truly awe inspiring place to visit.
