Option: Disable Commander Tag
Please, I would like to see gathering nodes, TPs, and merchants again.
I am usually 100% in favor of more customization options. I just feel like in this case it would be nothing more than a band-aid that undermines the point of commander tags being something that are visible map-wide.
I PvE, mostly solo. I have never followed a commander, and don’t foresee that I will ever have any reason or desire to follow one. In fact I generally try to stay away from commanders, because I don’t want the almighty zerg to swoop in, finish my opponent for me in 3 seconds, and swoop out again.
Commander tags are always on top of other map icons. They hide gathering nodes from me. They hide Merchants. Waypoints. Vistas. POIs. Dynamic Event icons. The directional N on my compass mini-map. Everything.
And even BEFORE the 9/9 patch, the number of Commanders on any PvE map was out of control. I do not believe the people who say it’s going to die down, since the multiple colors and the switch to being Account-wide only makes them more exciting.
Commander tags in PvE are mostly just “vanity plates” for people who think that the point of commander tags is so people can see them map-wide.
Give me that check box for PvE. Now.
Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.

Yes the commander tags annoyed me before the patch but now I just want the choice to disable it. It is my screen, my playing experience and no one else should feel threatened by my choice to turn it off.
IDK what Server’s and maps you’ve been on, I’ve seen maybe a slight increase in tags. Nothing out of the ordinary really. I know I’ve had a tag for a very long time and never pop it unless it’s to briefly point out something. People need to learn to use them properly rather then have Anet add another control mechanism that can backfire and bug horribly.

If only…people are using them in a lot of cases watching map chat because they know it bugs other people, welcome to online gaming 2014. That being said, it is ridiculously annoying and I would expect any such feature should automatically come with a toggle. If they can find a way to hide all your miniatures they sure as hell can find a way to hide skittle tags ( thanks Mala)!
By opening the map and right-clicking on a tag, you can opt to join the squad, unless it’s full. This will hide all other tags. Now, this is a temporary solution, but one that works. Basically, this is a new thing, and people who were informed of the change and purchased it for 100 Gold are just having fun showing off their colors. Anyone that already had Commander tags on multiple characters, who didn’t even get refunded the difference, are over the whole idea of showing off the tag. It’ll die down, it’s not going to be Skittles on the maps for that much longer.

Map icons should be prioritized over commander tags anyway.
people are just playing with their new toys. it will calm down soon.
