Perm bans for snowflake exploit kinda harsh?
So what is an exploit, case in point, I log into the game, go to the AH buy a yellow for lower than the price of an ecto and salvage it. I get lucky and get two ectos back, selling them both nets me enough money for two more yellows, which once again I get lucky with and earn four more ectos?
Is this an exploit? It seems normal to me, but given the twaddle handed out by Anet over this, how can we be sure?
Finding a recipe that gives you more mats than you used to make something is not a gap in the market. It’s a very obvious exploit, and I grant you some exploits are not as clear cut, but for you to think that something that gives more back than you use to make is not an exploit, well sir, im sorry for your genes.
read my posts, they didn’t take the initial recipe, they took the tier lower (300 one i think) and trew those in the mystic forge, they didn’t get the mats back, they only made profit on ecto’s but lost the rest of the mats.

No that’s not an exploit, it’s pure random luck.
Exploits should be fairly obvious…
Account wiping isn’t a punishment, its a let off, as there are plenty of ways in game to hide your gold.
But perm bans for a 1st offence is unfair too, everyone deserves a 2nd chance…
For 1st offence it should be a temporary month ban, so they miss completely one monthly event and the account is flagged for exploiting. In this case alot of the players would give the game up anyway and never come back. Well those who were sorry and like the game would get a 2nd chance.
For a 2nd offence, you would know if its a 2nd offence because there account would be flagged, then permanent ban.

You know I really can’t see the difference between buying from the AH and having enough luck to keep making ectos, and salvaging a recipe and being lucky enough to keep making ectos……
Same outcome, yet one is bannable and the other isn’t?
Since some people still don’t get that this wasn’t an infinite loop here is the full breakdown of the level 80 rare Snowflake Mithril Earring:
Assumption 1: The average return of ectoplasm from a rare item is 0.9 ectos.
Assumption 2: Salvaging this jewelery returns an average of 1.5 mithril ore.
(Feel free to correct either of these if they’re off, which they probably are)
Assumption 3: A master salvage kit was used (BLSKs weren’t worth using until the end).
8 mithril ore + 1 brilliant snowflake = 0.8 brilliant snowflake + 0.9 ectoplasm + 1.5 mithril ore
Multiplying by 10 for the sake of whole numbers gives:
80 mithril ore + 10 brilliant snowflake = 8 brillant snowflake + 9 ectoplasm + 15 mithril ore
Simplifying the equation gives:
65 mithril ore + 2 brilliant snowflake = 9 ectoplasm
Since 1 brilliant snowflake = 1 pristine snowflake + 1 ectoplasm + 4 mithril ore:
73 mithril ore + 2 pristine snowflake + 2 ectoplasm = 9 ectoplasm
The final simplified equation is this:
73 mithril ore + 2 pristine snowflake = 7 ectoplasm
Was this a very efficient recipie when first released? Yes. Did the market adjust in a few days? Yes. Was this an infinite loop as some people are saying? Absolutely not.
They should really just wipe out their bank that would be fair. You screw up Anets bank they screw yours lol.
You know what this is, Arenanet makes a mistake and sees that players won’t have to buy gems anymore so they remove em, as they are useless to them now…
Easily the silliest thing I have read today. I love how you think this is how companies work though lol. Tell me, in this company, do they also have a department for designing the ultimate Wacky Racer, and another dedicated to catching that darn pigeon?
I’m actually shocked you DONT think this is how companies work. Arenanet made a system where you can buy gold directly through them for real money, AND made gold very scarce in the game. Doesnt take a genius to see that anything that threatens the in game economy, and the scarcity of wealth is a threat to their bottom line.
As someone in a similar company, I can tell you there is no “evil corporation” department, only departments dedicated to producing great games, excellent customer service, and better and better products. People are delusional if they think companies go out of their way to make things uncomfortable for their customer.
The product is you, so you need to be treated with the utmost care and attention. It kind of scares me how few people have a realistic view of how the world works sometimes, thanks in part to hollywood movies and cartoons.
Money makes the world go round, that’s the way it has always been, and, for the foreseeable future at least, always will be. Corporations and businesses are about money, that’s what will get their attention the fastest, that’s not evil, that’s the way it is.
You seem to be reading to much into my post, I wasnt suggesting that Anet is some sort of Captain Planet villain, polluting the earth, just cuz they can. Something was a threat to their income, and they removed the threat, its not evil, it just IS.

If you got the insignia back as well, then yes, it would be an exploit.
People were using the exploit as a pure ecto printing machine. So much so that it affected the global market. Look at the 1 month to see the effect:

ANet’s post on /reddit:
“Guys, this was an exploit — pure and simple. The terminated accounts were connected to the most egregious levels of abuse. The User Agreement and the Rules of Conduct are on our legal page. You can read them if you’re not sure how things work. More informative, maybe, is the Conducts Breaches and Outcomes document. (all off of this page: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/)
Add it all together — the rules and the fact this impacts the whole game — then consider the forgiveness shown in an earlier instance of exploitation and get on board with the fact that it was wrong, the worst offenders lost their accounts, and that’s all pretty straightforward and as it should be."
Egregious. Not some kid that got a couple ectos. Egregious.
