All I can say is, if the tools had been account unlocks from the start, then I would definitely have bought a set of three, and probably bought multiple reskins. As it is, I’ve bought zero, and won’t buy any in future. Whether that loss is offset by whales, I have no idea.

What’s another issue is that these tools lose value the longer they’re left in their current state because their usefulness is determined by how much longevity the game has left. A year ago, I’d have bought all three, a year from now I probably wouldn’t buy any. If the change came tomorrow, I’d be on the fence.

I didn’t get them until they were character tradeable and then just used the bank, inconveniently. The shared inventory slots help, but only a little. I still have to make sure I “put them up” and “take them out” every character swap, which no longer needs to be at a bank.

I have one character of each class and each one uses the same three tools now since breaking my habit makes me have to search for the character with the tools. Better to stick to three tools. There are not enough slots shared slots for say all my sylvari to share one set and my asura characters a different set.

If they were duplicateable, like the acheev point skins are then I might buy more. I have a 4th now, but remembering who had it last of the 3 characters I’d like to use that one tool on was more trouble than it gave me pleasure. I regret buying more than three without more flexibility.

What would fix this problem is them finally bringing endless gathering tools into the wardrobe system. Which means all you’d need to do is go to your H screen and pick the one you want instead of worrying where you left your endless gathering tool. If you got that gathering tool that gives a chance of sprockets whenever you mine then with the wardrobe system it wouldn’t matter because it would just become like a trait so whatever look you choose when you mine you’d still get the chance of sprockets.

Reading through this post and am depressed at the people who spend hundreds of dollars on tools for multiple characters and think it’s an alright deal…

Depressed that people like to support their MMOs? Ultimately that’s why I buy gems, the tools are a useful sink for those gems. I’ve still spent less on GW2 in the past 4 years than I have on MMO subscriptions in the past.

Regardless, that’s the deal that was offered. Anyone who bought these tools should have known that.

In contrast, I’ve spent more on GW2 in the past 4 years than I would have for a typical MMO subscription. I’m a sucker for shiny things.

But I will never buy another unlimited mining tool as long as the watchwork pick exists (and gives watchwork sprockets).

Those armadillos would be a lot cooler if they looked more like real armadillos. mmm armadillos

I’m not sure that this supports the game as much as I used to think.

Yes, obviously giving ANet money helps them. But what about the effect it has on retention and new players? Happy players stay longer, and recommend the game more. If people felt the gem store was good value, maybe they’d be happier. If ANet think they’re trying to exploit their players, maybe they’ll be unhappier.

Maybe high spenders outweigh the money lost from low spenders and lost players. Maybe they don’t.

or, for that money, you could buy 3-4 copies of HoT, the entire game, and give them out to friends to play with. it just baffles me: 3-4 copies of the entire game, and all of its content, for the same price as the minor logging convenience item on multiple characters

Its fine. You don’t need infinite tools on each toon. Pick your harvesters and buy for the rest as many people above are explaining, there isn’t too much need for it.

Convenience yes but if we’re talking value, GW2 if the most value efficient MMO EVER. I’d like to cite the lack $10/month you’re paying. Buying the tools is a convenience item sorry but if you want multiple toons to have that convenience then they should each get them.

As long as they are account bound I find it totally useful because I choose who should have all 3 at any time, particularly on the days when I decide to go out harvesting.
