Tried to play for “Fun” for about a month now. Tried to get into Dungeons so I didn’t have to grind karma again. Denied cause I was playing a necro and the cap on bleeds AND I hadn’t grinded a max exotic karma set yet (which what I was trying to avoid). No group. Guild has little to no interest any more either and I have no desire to go guild hunting again.
Thought new content would add “Fun”. Nope. Can’t get in cause I don’t have max stats already.

So I’m left wandering in circles picking up random DEs for karma now..? Sorry, not “fun”.

Whether the % in stats is small or not; apparently it matters enough to some as they wont join my group and I can’t get into other groups without the “gear check”. Sooo… I am about done here I think. /sad

Mountain out of a molehill if ya ask me. This seems to be a trend now, where people seem to think they know better than the people who make the games they love. Every game mmos or not people seem to be forcing their opinions on the companies through mass complaints no matter how small the issue. Give an inch and they take a mile you paid for the game that doesn’t entitle you to make it. Enjoy the game even if not all aspects, nothing is perfect but you should learn to settle for great which this game is.

You realize that having fun, taking your time, taking a break even, is what horizontal progression enables, a static gear plateau WILL still be there when you’re done, you will not be left behind and forced to grind to catch up.

But go ahead, take your time and go have some fun or take a break now. By the time you’re done I guarantee that you will be behind the curve gear or fractal-wise and be unable to find a group. GG.

This industry just needs to move on. We’ve seen a bunch of “WoW 2.0” attempts, and
who actually wants that? Do we really want to be playing those same game mechanics for
another 5 or 10 years? -Mike O’Brien

I’m with you 110% OP. Seriously I couldn’t care less about given precursor in LS or Ascended gear. I’m still having a lot of fun playing right now (since launch), searching for the right gear (exotic is enough for me at this stage) and the right look. When I get tired of that, I’ll take a break or start a new char (diff. race and class of course).

It’s a game. A game is meant to be played. It’s not a duty (or work). It’s for FUN.

Seriously, if your guild is not helping you with dungeons, fractals lvl1, story or whatever else, drop them and find a new one.
I repeated story and dungeons so many times, just to help guildies, none of us has ascended, not even full exotics. Someone not even lvl80 and we help leveling.
Nonetheless we do all of the contents without any problem, so there’s no hard requirements if you’re able to play.
Just find a decent guild.

im sick of all this kitten on these forums. if you guys feel like your grinding or being forced to do something then don’t do it. the premise is really simple. Play the game for fun. have fun with the game. when you stop having fun take a break. you aren’t being forced to farm/grind or whatever else you want to call it. it’s not required to do anything in the game. so just remember it’s a game, have fun. if your not having fun, take a break. you already bought the game and it will be here when you’re ready to have fun again.

Well for one thing, if you were paying attention you would know that the complaints weren’t about grinding, they are all about forcing a single gameplay style, making crafting obsolete and useless, making all the material that we need to craft even the infused runes drop solely in a single dungeon, and breaking their word (manifesto).

GW2 players don’t mind the grind as evidenced by the large number of people buying this game to farm mats to craft, farm karma to buy gear. People don’t mind running dungeons as an OPTION either. It’s when it’s the ONLY option that it becomes a problem.

That’s the issue. Not that they added a new tier (because there was a gap).

The issues are :

1: broke their promise that attracted most of us (manifesto) by forcing us to have a single gameplay style making obsolete all of the other gear and events thru-out the world of Tyria.
2: didn’t keep this new gear a horizontal progression by even adding bought with karma or discovered gear crafting recipes for this new tier (not talking the infusions I’m talking about the actual armor)
3: made it so that the drops are all RNG drops, solely making this one dungeon the only gameplay for progression.
4: made it impossible to get the drops to complete a set of exotic much less an infused runes. (haven’t had a single shell drop off a karka since the event) they didn’t even make the drops off vets and champs better like they said they would.
5: changed the games focus to this new grind so now no one can get enough people to run the older dungeons or clear out open world events like those in Orr.

Its either you wanna be effective or dont wanna be effective.
In simple terms :
Do the content = Effectiveness.
Dont do the content = Not effective.

If by being ineffective in match/battles is Fun then i think you people really need a brainscan lol no seriously.

Horizontal progression is optional, vertical is not. If you refuse to follow the vertical progression of the game you will eventually be unable to play new content due to power creep. This has happened in EVERY MMO that has ever released with a gear based progression system.

What you’re suggesting is like sitting in your back garden drinking tea during the next world war. If you just do what you find fun and ignore what everyone else is doing it won’t affect you right? Sure…

The massive decline in zone populations other than LA has shown that this patch has had a massive impact across the game. Even if you don’t do fractals, everyone else is, and that’s fewer people for you to play with.

Addicts are a painful mob to deal with…

When they started they got buzzed, now they are just zombie husks repeating behaviour that they can’t stop or enjoy – stuck in a loop of agony and displeasure and constantly trying to rationalise why they started and why they keep going.

Really – all of this angst is just a cry for help, but like all addicts’ cries for help worth taking with a grain of salt.

I haven’t read most of these posts. I’m just gonna say If a few pieces of gear make you useless or unable to measure up, play a different game. Its not nearly as bad as when I forget to swap back to another sPvP amulet but guess what, my toon still works. Enemies still die. And if people are not letting you join groups because you don’t have full sets of stuff….lie to them. there is no gear inspection last I checked and trans stones abound. If you suck with your class, you suck with your class. 100 points in power or Vit aren’t going to change things like night and day.

Fun is very subjective because everyone defines fun in different ways.

For me, I see something fun when there’s tempations and something to achieve for. I see contents as fun too but all contents don’t last long. Every content are limited. Either mmorpg or console game, once you experience all the carrots, you feel like moving to another game. Mmorpg can’t afford that. This is why mmorpg need progression (any progression and not limited to gears). Well, that’s my opinion.

Horizontal progression ala GW1. This included:

*weapon and armour skins
*titles
*reputation grinds
*skill unlocks
*heroes

There are probably a lot more but I can’t list them all right now. The trouble is GW2 was supposed to be built on horizontal progression but the only thing it really offered from that list was skins. Titles can’t be clearly displayed in this game so they have no prestige value. You generally unlocked all your skills before the cap whereas in GW1 you still had HUNDREDS of skills to track down in unique locations after the cap. It probably didn’t help that the story wasn’t at all engaging and no forms of housing made it in for launch.

Horizontal progression is all about having things to do that offer progression through variety rather than statistical improvement. A GW1 monk with 8 skills could stand up to a monk with 400+, he just had fewer build options. GW2 lost all of that somehow.

It’s probably worth noting that your use of the term ‘end game’ suggests you likely were never the target audience to begin with though.

I keep hearing end game and that you cant have it without vertical progression. Seriously do we ever really hit end game in a mmo I mean by the time we reach that one dungeon and killed that one last monster the new expansion is coming out offering more and better content. Its only a reference to keep the lemmings going to get more shinies in the ever undying quest for bigger and better things. Let me give you a hint there really is no end games out there. People who wanted horizontal progression just realize for every new bright shiny they give you they just add more hp on to the next boss and they rather of had cosmetic looks to choose from then numbers making it truely a choice wether to do the content or skip it. =)

El Hefe and Galen Grey, none of this uproar existed before the Lost Shores patch. For the most part, everyone enjoyed the game, did what they wanted to do. After the patch, everything is so different. How do you explain that? Are people out of their mind suddently after the patch? Just because you ignore the new contents doesn’t mean everyone else should. What’s the point of creating a content if it’s to be ignored? For it to be a good content, it needs to be enjoyed by and accessible by the majority of players.

I like playing in the new dungeon infact, but it’s so hard to get a group for my particular level. None of this existed prior to the patch. If I wanted to find a PUG for a dungeon, it was instant. Now, I have to spam in LA for an hour just to get a group for a particular level of my fractal. THIS is not fun. This kind of thing was supposed to be so yesterday. It wasn’t supposed to exist in GW2. So tell me, what am I supposed to do if I’m trying to enjoy the content that I like, but the process for it causes me agony.

Just because you two enjoy the game your own way and ignore the pressing fact doesn’t change a single thing about the effect the patch has brought up on to the community. People are suddenly losing appeal with the game because of the patch. Good for you to find the game still fun. You can’t dictate fun for others, so respect that. Don’t just write it off as “take a break”, “just play what you find fun”, or “the problem isn’t serious so stop worrying”.

Whether YOU awknowledge it or not, the patch created issues, players are unhappy, there’s an uproar, and it’s affecting the dynamics of the game.

People over reacting?

Thing is we already had this sort of thing from the opposite camp! People saying there is nothing to do at level 80 what was the reply then? you’re right the game is not fun? no we explained to them all the stuff you could do at level 80! Now it seems there is another yet mis perception and yes this is a misperception because its a fact Ascended gear didnt change a single thing yet the same exact game that was amazingly fun to play has suddenly become boring?

The soul of any horizontal progression game is having a large horizontal surface area to play in. The problem (for us) with vertical progression is you have a narrow corridor that keeps taking you up and up making everything behind it irellevant. Gw2 still has its horizontal soul! Ascended gear gates nothing and makes no content irellevant ! I am sorry but its just you own personal choice making it so !

I or no other can tell you how to enjoy any game, everyone plays their own way! All I can tell you is the game is still 100% horizontal but you seem to have decided to play it 100% vertically just because they introduced that option in one single place!

If I am a PvE player and the next update they release PvE content and PvP content I am going to play all of that PvE content and enjoy all that PvE content! I am certainly not going to spend all my time playing PvP saying how much the game is unenjoyable to me!

Ascended gear will become a problem once you’ll be unable to play some content without it! Right now there isnt such a problem in fact you can be missing exotic and Rare gear and still play everything effectively! Until then and until lower level content remains relavant in my opinion Gw2 remains entirely Horizontal !

So why am I enjoying the game while so many dont it seems? well the only thing I can see is because I play horizontally cause I enjoy playing horizontally from what I am seeing these people want to play horizontally but are unable to do it unless forced in it! thats my view at least!

The whole game save for Hearts is designed to be played in groups! Not only that but everyone is threated like they’re grouped with each other all the time, events scale and every single impediment to group play is removed and you claim there is no massively multiplayer PvE?

In my opinion there is a problem but its opposite of what you’re saying. Its so easy and rewarding to team up that you get massive zergs that roam making the events that tackle way too easy cause they end up many times larger then to what level the event scales to!

Sorry to say so, but that sounds quite naïve.

Orr is not the same. With most players in LA, you’re likely not able to play in Orr as you were before the patch. Group events don’t happen because too few people are there to do them. Waypoints are contested.

The old dungeons are not the same. The dedicated dungeon-player knows that the time to get ascended gear is now. If he wants to continue past fractal level 10 or likely into upcoming content, agony will be there and it’ll get worse. So he knows he needs it eventually. If he gets it now, he will keep the capacity to join his (hardcore) friends in whatever content they’re up to. If he doesn’t, he fears he’ll be left behind. Therefore, many, many people grind fractals like mad. This means, however, that fewer people go to the old dungeons, especially for the hard paths that you might still need for the title “dungeon master”.

Crafting is not the same. I would’t buy a non-ascended ring or backpiece anymore. Why waste money on something I’d discard as soon as a locky drop makes it obsolete, no matter how perfect the itemization. This destroys markets.

Thus saying that ascended gear changed nothing is simply incorrect. It changed a lot for the game I used to play and the way I used to play it. Both were immensely affected. For someone levelling alts or aimlessly wandering around the countryside for fun, nothing may have changed. For me, it has.

If you fail to see this point and keep pretending nothing has happened without a qualifier like nothing has changed for me, you’re showing gross disregard for other players and their arguments. I… don’t know how to characterize such disregard. I don’t want this post deleted.

Yes, much of the content is designed for groups. But more often than not there are not enough people around to form a group.

you get massive zergs

Sometimes yes, but more often not. Just check the mid level zones. Heck, even Malchor’s Leap and Straits of Devastation have such low population that most waypoints and temples are almost permanently occupied. And that’s on a high population server.

Try to play the game for fun if you and your teammates get seperated by kittening RNG, it doesn’t work. The RNG element to get ascended gear you need to proceed through FotM is the most stupid I’ve seen in a very long time, it’s totally unfun and not rewarding at all.

If you implement a gating mechanic you’d better make sure that at a certain point during the progression, before the mechanic kicks in, everybody who went through the progression has the required gear. You don’t base it on RNG you make it an automatism.
For FotM this should be something like: Once you reached lvl 10 you can go to a vendor an choose one ring for free, once you reached lvl 20 you can choose the next ring and so on. Every 10 levels you get to pick an item for free so you meet the requierements for the next 10 levels.

Its not naivee its making a distinction between what happens because of changes to the game and what happens because of player choices.

Lets start by saying that things are likely to be different across servers. My server (piken square) just doesnt have this issue at all! (well I dont think it does havent been in Orr for a while) but I’ve played all over the place. Frostgorge Sound, Lornar’s Pass, Queensdale, Gendarran Fields, there are always players running around!

Likewise I did a couple of AC since FoTM started and it still was easy to get a group on my server.

Why buy any exotic items in the first place you can get it 1/2 the price if you do it by yourself! answer is convinience! And most of the items sold on the TP are sold for ectos and as raw materials for precursors thats why rares still sell for 18+ s … no one needs rare items to use them as armor because like you said why spend the money when tomorrow you can buy an exotic! the problem is even less so now because it will take you far longer then a day to get ascended armor!

Also please keep in my I am not disregarding anything! Like I said plenty of times like you I dont agree with Ascended armor and would rather have never been introduced and said so multiple times !

I just dont see the big change you said it brought and disagree that the changes you mentioned are because of the update. they’re because of players attitude! If on your server players decided cosmetic skins are suddenly worthless and having the best gear is whats imperative I am sorry to say but your server loves vertical progression more then they like horizontal progression. Same thing if they abandoned Orr for the more profitable pastures!

I think you’re missing the fact your server has a much larger problem! If arenanet never releases more profitable content your server would probably just hang out in Orr Ignoring any new content with the same rewards. If Arenanet release more profitable zones Orr would still be abandond in favor of this more profitable zone.
If on your server game play is dictated by what is the most profitable content it will keep happening new gear tiers or not!

In fact you seem to have the same phylosofy. Tell me If Southern Cove had events that gave out rewards greater then Orr, would you keep playing in Orr? And if your answer is yes why do you keep playing in Orr and ignore the rest of tyria?
