Please end this macro instruments.
Forget macros.
When will i finally be able to play the Marriner’s Horn while moving like other instruments can? QQ
Save the Bell Choir activity!
Some of us just really enjoy music, and perhaps we don’t have the skill to play it by hand.
in that case you have virtually limitless platforms to listen to your favorite music. what’s the point?

I really can’t understand why you’re having a hard time with this. If I find it enjoyable to have music playing in game, coming from my instruments, why does it bother you in what manner it’s being “played”.
Can you all play a harp in real life? Can you play a bloody horn? Should we all have the exact same skills as our character before we should be allowed to do anything in game?
and we’re back to the needless irl comparisons. they’re still not applicable or relevant
it bothers me because i spent time and effort getting good at the instruments. i see it as any other part of the game – and just like any other part of the game, when people cheat to cut corners, it cheapens the whole thing.
and just like any other area of the game, youre not just magically imbued with the necessary skill, it’s something you build over time. that doesnt justify laziness
I play instruments, both with macros and without. I can remember my macro songs rather easily, and playing them is just a matter of getting it down pat and the rhythm in tune with your ear.
My biggest problem, and why I use macros?
I’m Australian. There is NEVER a moment when I have under 350ms latency. To have under that is physically impossible. That means that while I’m playing, I can just try to do my best to match the correct beat and sounds, but… I can’t do it. I can never hit the right times. One second I’ll be at 350ms. The next I’ll be at 900ms. If I’m somewhere like SW, or DR during heavy peak hours, I’ll be shot to a random bouncing figure between 500ms and 1500ms.
I don’t choose to have lag, but the fact is, I have it. Take a guess what the only way to compensate is?
EDIT: For those slow to catch-on, my ping means that while something may sound find and dandy on my end, the reality is that it sounds horribly out of time and out of synch on other people’s ends.

You brought the RL comparisons into this conversation first. Did you really forget the two suggestions you gave me in your last two posts?
So we’re back to the part where you just need your ego stroked. Yes, obviously it takes skill to play things by hand. You want to be recognized and praised for your grand skill. Let me get right on that…
Anyway, as fun as this is doing circles with you, I’ll be moving on now.

uhuh yeah thanks, and youre obviously just using macros to get attention at zero cost. good job. keep being an unskilled goon. see you around
Please don’t end macros with instruments, they open up so many possibilities.
yeah the limitless possibilites of clicking play and stop. just incredible
I play by hand, and composed a rendition of “Fear not This Night” by ear.
I really don’t care who uses macros or not. There are people that enjoy music no matter how it’s composed, people who prefer the hard work of a hand-played piece, and people that prefer perfection made possible by a macro over human error/personality handplaying can infuse into a song. There are still others that use macros to play songs that are virtually impossible to play with the current octave switches.
It’s impossible to draw a line that reasonably defines where any of this becomes wrong or detrimental to the perceived value of normal players.
Just keep playing by hand. Focus on your quality, your flavor and your style. That will draw people to you. If you think macro players are a travesty, and yet you want the attention of the people they attract, then your desperation for recognition is overshadowing your desire to create in the way you feel is right.
Personally I think auto-playing is like having artwork drawn on your behalf. It isnt really yours, but that doesn’t make it less pretty. Unless, you know, you built the macro. But I don’t assume anyone dedicated enough to build a flawless macro wouldn’t value hand playing.
Note: Ask a macro player to hand play a melody for you if you doubt their musical prowess. You’d be surprised how many of them actually are quite skilled.

I used to think (build op, pls nerf) like you, but then I took a nerf to the knee.

Seriously though, I wouldn’t mind .acb file support with some kind of indication of when a player plays by hand and when someone uses macro replay even though I’m using macros myself.
I think that’s a good way to satisfy both sides.
I want to try and clarify that I’m really not trying to insult the entire music community with my posts, they were more or less directed at a certain individual.
I really do appreciate the time and skill that goes in to being able to play an instrument by hand. I’ve watched a ton of videos of people playing their songs and duets, and it’s quite impressive. I would love to actually see one of those big concerts that I’ve read about before.
Unfortunately, I’ve been a bit disheartened by the online voice of the musical community. I recently came back to the game after a very extended break, and was thrilled to see that there were instruments in game. So I picked one up right away, and started googling music that I could play with it, and I found a lot of threads filled with people much like Eugenics.
To give a wee bit of background, in the last game that I played (Archeage), it was quite different as you would create sheet music (MML coding), which would be played automatically once you created it. I had expected GW to be a similar style, but quickly found out it was not. I loved the music system there, and actually taught myself how to create my own songs in MML vs. just having a selection of songs that I pulled from the website (although I did have some of those too as I loved the songs).
Jumping back to GW2, so right away I started finding thread after thread of people who were trying to actively get macro users banned, and how dare they try to play music with us, plenty of comments how it is taking away from the people with actual skill, and also some upset by those who get tips. I definitely did not get warm fuzzies from this side of the community.
I’m happy to say, thankfully this attitude doesn’t carry over into game (at least not that I’ve seen yet), so there is some hope. I will say though, personally I rarely ever play music in town. I go to some quiet little spot and just play the music as I do still enjoy the songs, even if they are just macros. My character looks adorable while playing too
One of my favorite nights that I’ve had since coming back was when I had first made my new Necro. I was in Rata Sum watching another character play music on their lute. It was obviously a macro, but that doesn’t matter. Someone else joined in with their selection of music, and then I shared some of my songs also. A dance party was started soon as well. That’s what I enjoy about music. It brings people together and gets people to let their hair down so to speak.
Anyway, thank you to those who are understanding when it comes to the macro users. We all play music because we enjoy some part of it, and it’s nice to know there are others out there, who obviously have way more skill, that are OK with us playing at their sport
Edit: Holy Batman! That got long. :X LOL.
