It has brought to my attentions that when you transmute an item into another skin. Then, when you look at it in the mystic forge, a phrase will pop up and say “Warning This Item is transmuted and it will function as [Original Item].” So here is my question: What happens if you transmute a precursor? Will it still function as the precursor?

Generally, for MF it is the equpment that supplies stats that counts, not the one that supplies the visuals. So yes, if you reskin a precursor to look differently (honestly, why would you? most of them don’t even have sensible stats…), you will still be able to use it in MF. If you put a precursor look on a non-precursor weapon, it will still be a non-precursor weapon and thus not usable for legendary crafting.

Actions, not words.

Thank you for the clear answer. I wouldn’t do it myself either, it’s just my friend asked me about it because she was curious and some of the stuff online are outdated.
Also, thanks for the other answer (that you can’t skin a precursor skin and use it) which I already know that lol.
