Precursors: Will it ever end?
In my opinion Legendaries do not feel… well, legendary. You either buy them with lots of money or get really lucky. How is that legendary? I want to complete an epic challenge, such as fighting Jormag’s claw while naked or embarking on a long and difficult quest to find the lost precursor.
Anet has hinted that they will add other methods to get a precursor, so we will just have to wait and see what those methods will be. In the mean time, if you are not lucky or do not make enough money (like me), stop torturing yourself and give up the chase until things improve. Exotics will perform exactly the same in the meantime.
At the end of the day, it is only a cosmetic thing you are stressing over and if you stop wasting your time trying to get one you will have a much happier gaming experience because of it.
The reason of precursors inflating so high is the new trend of selling legendaries.
When it just started a lot of people quickly completed their legendaries by buying stuff from the TP and then selling legendary for profit. It actually got to a point where making a legendary only cost SP, karma and map completion – you could buy mats and precrsors from TP and still have profit from selling legendary.
Now one kind of market manipulators are trying to make profit off other kind that are making buisness with legendaries. The average player is stuck between and suffers.
Crybabies.
Im a casualplayer, got a full time job and so far i got TWO precursors.
Learn how to get em and then start crying if u still fail, im pretty sure many of u arent even trying to get one and just farming money to buy them.
My first precurs i got from EB jumping puzzle chest. Venom (Trident) BUH. :C
My second one i got from Mystic forge, i threw in around 500 1handed swords to get my zap but the thing is i ended up with MORE money then i started with.
I doubt i was superlucky cus my guildleader got one after like 600 weaps too.
FYI i started with 40G and ended up with 105G and a Zap worth 250G.
L2P.
Yeah because this is definitely a L2P issue thanks!( sarcasm )
Seriously the precursor issue is by far one of my biggest peeves about GW2, I enjoy the game and a Legendary weapon is one of my goals but finding the precursor is the most difficult part. I refuse to buy Zap from the TP, I’m not going to pay the gold for it, the mystic toilet has yet to yield the results I seek but until we get a scavenger hunt that’s the best shot I have. I really wish ArenaNet had implemented a scavenger hunt at launch and I hope they are actually working on one as they claim to be. This is obviously a hot button issue with many of us so please ANet fix it somehow.

If all the precursors are really owned by only one person that buys every single one going up on the market for less than his/her desired price, there isn’t a lot one can do to affect change. Since one can buy in-game gold with real money, the supply of in-game gold to continue doing this is potentially limitless, assuming the aforementioned person chooses to spend their real-life money on gaming money.
Since it isn’t likely that precursors will become less rare, which would naturally drive the price down, people would simply have to stop buying precursors on the TP altogether so our monopoly holder wouldn’t be able to get a return on their investment. If they were unable to sell a single precursor they’d bought for say, five years, they might be motivated to lower their prices.
Of course, this kind of boycotting venture to affect change would require massive amounts of communication, cooperation, and patience. lol
In other words, it would be achieving the impossible.
I thought anet was working on a scavenger hunt to get precursors, admittedly, I got the feeling that it may not be happen till the end of this year.

Well, people who can control the precursors market have other sources of income on TP. Precursors are just a side project, so they don’t actually loose a lot when buying out cheap ones. It’s not a “gamble” like some say. it’s an investement.

As long as it is profitable to craft legendaries to sell them on TP there will be people who buy precursors. That’s the problem. Rich people struggle with each other for TP profits, while average player suffer and don’t have any actual control over the prices.

I agree, this is by far not even close to a l2p issue and im thankful i don’t have to deal with short sighted people in my guild over this. I’ve done EB at least 40 times and not gotten one, L2P, ha…
I’ve played the toilet game enough to know you’re not making money doing it, ever. Toss in 500 rares and basically loose it all, sure if you get really lucky you’ll get a really rare exotic that sells for enough to maybe cover part of the cost of those 500 rares, but you’re not going to make money, period, ever. If that was the general rule of thumb than everyone could easily do that for profit. How about L2 comprehend the issue. I wasn’t even trying for anything but getting my wife the lover and that cost me plenty with 0 return. The gambling system RNG, needs to go, at the very least, for precursors. I really have no idea how anyone at anet thought this was a good idea.
Why put so much effort into it? I can only imagine they will release more with expansions. To think they will keep all gear the exact same for the next few years is silly.
Of course it will end. The precursor prices will level out as soon as they hit the limit of what people are willing to pay for them, just as with any other market. Sans an occasional rich boy willing to blow thousands of real world dollars on gems→gold transactions, there is a limit as to how much you can pump up any price, no matter how desirable an item is.

Please enlighten me as how to play RNG. what of my 5 skills that I have or my elite skills that I have will enable me be beat this creature.
You cant kill what you cant see – you cant see RNG but is does kill you.
Basically you got luck so it is other peoples faults for not getting lucky – seems like someone really needs to get lucky in a bad way and it aint me.
When you actually grasp the game and have learned to play it please come back and have a discussion about RNG and VP vs HP and economy.
Till then please stop posting.
and no i dont believe you making money from the toilet.
we will get an expansion before they fix this- they just dont have a clue what they are doing since nov 15.

It’s not about the effort, i really don’t put much effort into it at all, i’m not bent on getting one. I’m in no rush, i’m sure things will change, it’s just a really poor system that’s been put in place in lieu of giving it much thought and it’s sad. I think the majority of complaints are valid and no one i’ve seen that wasn’t being sarcastic is even remotely asking for it to be easy, it’s just now the drop rate is so stacked against you, you’d be better off playing vegas odds. People get em, I know quite a few that have gotten them out of chests during the karka event, and a super limited few that got them alternatively. Most just sold them off, since the epic climb to make a legendary is enough to not bother. Tack on the RNG issue with the precursors and you’ve got a pretty messed up economy. At least they’ve finally made lodestones more attainable.
Truth is, RNG will never translate into L2P, it’s not even close to that.
Getting a precursor definitely has nothing to do with L2P, I think we can agree on that.
And I’m not talking about rushing to a legendary either. I’ve played 1000hrs so far since head-start.
The problem is that everytime I get within 100g of buying my precursor, it goes up by another 100g.
And with the luck I have, I’m not going to blow 100s of my hard-earned gold into the mystic toilet and get nothing but un-named exotic staffs at the best. And most people will agree with me on that point. No one wants to blow 100s of gold that they’ve worked so hard to get, only to get nothing.
Anet has mentioned several times about a precursor scavenger hunt. This is the only thing that will stop the skyrocketing price of precursors.
Spirit of Faith [HOPE] – RIP
There are people that are buying these precursors. It seems that one or two of each type sell every few days. If all those people can afford one, then clearly they are not priced too high or they wouldn’t be selling.
If they were any cheaper then everyone and their brother would have a legendary and it wouldn’t be a legendary anymore. If anything they should make them more expensive to help get back to their 5% legendary goal.
Once again the flawed assumption that the precursor is the entire legendary or even close..

It is when you have everything else… And at the moment even starting from scratch the precursor is the biggest cost.

Yeah i see this a lot. And the 5 of people that have a legendary isn’t factual either, it’s far less than 1 on my server. Just looking at the auction house you can see it’s less than 1, if it was even 1% the cost would be at least half of what it is. Maybe, if you squeeze the population (to people that actively play daily) you might see a %5 that have a precursor. Interestingly enough, people would rather just use the forge since it’s not like you toss in 4 rare greatswords in and get howl, if you get a precursor, you’d be getting dusk. Getting what you actually want from a chest is an even bigger crapshoot. There in lies just as big a problem as the RNG from the mystic toilet.

So if you spent countless hours farming the rest of the legendary, you should be held back for months simply because the precursor price is rising faster then the average gold per hour someone will make?
And yeah the precursor is the one item in the legendary that cost the most, that is kinda the problem duh, or more correctly the pace at which its cost is increasing the problem.
Munki: not to even mention the fact that Gs has two chances of a precursor per try, compared to the rest.
The “joy” of RNG loot based systems …..
Not all RNG loot systems pin their entire endgame on a <0.2% drop chance.

Ha yeah, i don’t even think it’s that high. 2 out of 1000? I think we’d see more then. Maybe it was .2 out of the karka chest…. It’s closer to .08 out of the forge i’d bet and quite possibly .02 from a chest. There are people posting videos of well over 1000 rares into the forge and getting bupkiss.
I remeber talking to a friend who went to a gold farming website just to see the average price was going these days. They are now also selling legendaries (for cheaper than if you were to build it yourself/make it). Honestly Anet really dropped the ball on this one. I think they wanted more people to use the gem store, but it ended up biting them in the butt and simply promoting 3rd party gold buyers. They’re trying to change though. Final Rest, Wisteria, Flux Matrix, Rhendarks Spear, these are all weapons I assume they’re testing to see how it works out in which you can get items in the open world more, rather than RNG in the MF or buying off of the TP. I think fractal weapons are also a clear indication of this.
If they’re going to make legendaries easier to get (they’ve mentioned they’ll soon be account bound instead of soul bound) I see no reason they can’t do the same for dyes.
And yea, I feel a grind is warranted in this game for skin swaps… not gear. that’s why I don’t mind the requirements for legendaries too much and would sooner consider selling one before actually getting one.
Legendaries are excessive, but the precursor isn’t the problem. It’s everything else on top of it.
I didn’t notice any “soon” when they said legendaries will be account bound (but that would be good). Yes account bound dyes would also be great (even if it doesn’t compare). Legendaries will soon no longer be just skins but prema top tier weapons (and account bound at some point even if not “soon”).
The precursor is the problem. You got the karma that is a semi-time limit cuz of daily (unless you grind for it for hours every day looking for events), you got the gold sink (that if you want you can grind for faster), you can see progress towards it etc. Precursors are a gamble with variable amount of time that are too easy for some and impossible for others (while prices keep rising) with no visible progress AND IT’S on top of the other stuff that is also a grind or huge time sink if you don’t buy things.
AFL – Away From Life. // I admit to being a bad person.
Character specific key binds…yesterday if possible. Thank you.
The fact is people are just plain greedy i bet most of those folks already got a legendary and now they just want to gain more and more gold and for what. I can promise you one thing as a person that dont really care for legendaries if i ever get a precursor i would sure as hell not sell it on the tp for 600g like some money hungry fool. Id sell it privatly at 200g maby 250g thats enough to fully gear all my caracters and buy all the ugrades i want. Nobody needs 600g
you’re asking A LOT of the people with precursors here. I mean, it’s just human instinct to hoard whatever gives them the advantage over another person. Why are there billionaires in the world, when there are billions starving. Does anyone really need more than a few million dollars? no, noone needs it, but in our capitalistic society wants over-rule needs.
